Do what? Just do nothing and cross your fingers?

Yes? Specifically order your front-line cruiser+ ships to engage the station and leave everyone else to their own devices to distract the enemy ships.

Eliminate orders are a commit_suicide=true toggle for the AI 95% of the time, always have been, don't use them unless there is no conceivable way the target can get backup or run away before it dies or come out on top on it's own. If you want your fleet to generally fight towards a target use an engage order instead. Same goes for fighter strike.

Disabled SAD and the crashing stopped.

Disabling graphicslib's shaders did it, the messages while saving not so much. Not fond of lopping off an arm to treat an infected finger though.

GraphicsLib isn't causing the game to crash. Just running that, plus a mod (Neutrino) that requires it to make sure it's in use, playing and saving without issue.

Got a reproducible crash that happens on saving within a few minutes of play (possibly requires combat to happen?). The game appears to be running without issue up until attempting to save, long after the point where a save turns fatal.

Mods (Lots; 32, cranked memory up to 6GB to cope, system has 16GB total)

This behaviour seems most easy to trigger on ships with nice, wide turret arcs. Those turrets having longer ranged weapons than in forward hardpoints also prompts it, as does having PD-flagged weapons in the hardpoints. Forward pointing missile hardpoints that must be aimed seem to prevent it, as well as the turret arcs having a small frontal overlap.

@Alex: Try a Hammerhead with LAG in it's forward turrets and the medium DHMG in the front hardpoints, missiles should be ones flagged as do not aim and the two rear slots vulcans. You should be able to test everything above by swapping the loadout around.

Honestly I see a better option if workshop integration becomes a thing in the (distant) future. Valve can decide to change the rules and yoink rights, unlikely as it is they do it, but the way around it is simple. Don't put the actual mod on the workshop. Just a text file with a url pointing at a zip. A separate mod can then look for those and download the actual mod, and just like that Valve has zero rights to it (and if you don't even want them to touch the name you could give it an alias; "Brown Ring Dive Yobs" and so on).

The workshop already has dependencies built in to make sure all the required utilities are picked up too.

Obviously that's incredibly abusable, but with the appropriate security measures in the downloader mod it can work very smoothly.

To elaborate, the sabot shot is very effective against shields (due to being kinetic) and has high enough damage that they can easily punch through 200~ armour - the typical amount your average frigate has. That they fire and reload in three-shot salvoes as well means that a frigate without serious shield efficiency or armour is going to take a nasty amount of damage.

Harpoons are, for starters, much slower. They also deal explosive damage, which shields are resistant to. You can get a similar effect from them, yes, but that requires the target to be on the verge of an overload already. Sabots can overload frigates (and destroyers with weak flux/shield) from zero flux.

The counters to a sabot salvo is either being close enough that PD takes out their first stage, or being so far away that the second stage doesn't fire. The AI doesn't know to do either of these things, and I've lost ships to them as well simply because there's very little time to react.

The same is true with vanilla sabot racks of course, but it's made far worse if it can be done repeatedly.

(Doing some testing; reducing the cooldown to 4, reload and burst size to 1, prevents that without making the small sabot rack underpowered.)

Noticing that sabot racks are extremely good / borderline OP with this. Might need their shot behaviour reverted back to the scatter-shot from an update or two ago to prevent them being a nearly uncounterable "die, or overload then die" weapon.

I wonder, could making the AI braver if it's armour is in good condition (in comparison to it's target, using absolute values to avoid a ship with untouched 200 trying to face-tank something with 500 half gone) work? That way it'd be far more likely to press the attack even at high flux, since it can afford the risk. Might make the incidences of unnecessary light/moderate damage more common but I'd take that over excessively standoffish AI any day.

That's... a really good idea. Being able to just in general put an order up for a particular ship at a market to improve the odds in exchange for paying more (finder's fee, etc) would be fantastic.

The reverse would be nice too; as in contracts pop up on mission boards requesting ships.
