I too tried to defeat a mortar, but with the stacks of fighters and overwhelming numbers, I ended up losing very quickly. Three capital ships bit the dust and most of my support ships. I have to say not enjoyable in the least. At least it wasn't iron man. Might want to tweak these battles, just way to OP for the AI's right now.

Edit- I just did some math and essentially these 2 star towers have well over 600 dp that are all deployed against your fleet, which will have a maximum of 180 dp. This seems really broken. I have uninstalled the Mod, only because too many decent worlds are blocked behind these unbeatable battles.

Not trolling at all. I have legitimate questions, but feel free to continue to call me out for inane comments.

@CptZoom, please review the forum rules found here: https://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=2668.0

It seems the entire point of your necro of this thread was to be sarcastic and toxic, so consider this an official warning.

Not at all. I may be sarcastic, but I honestly want to discuss why there is no auto save feature in this game. I think there have been enough replies to show that calling this thread back from the dead wasn't unwarranted. I guess what I would like is some feedback on why such an essential feature in nearly every modern game is missing in this game, whether we can expect it to be added, and if not, maybe we need to get a modder to mod it into the game. Simple as that. If my response to other snarky comments was snarky, it was just tit for tat and not intended to go against the forum rules.

I agree with OP on this issue. If you treat your new players as unpaid alpha testers, at least listen to their feedback. New players will always have expectations and make assumptions, based on the tropes of your genre, and if those assumptions get violated too often, the game is at fault, not the new players. Starsector has no autosaving whatsoever. What contemporary games do not have autosave?

To get an idea of what games are starsector-adjacent, we can use this site, which gives us:
RimWorld, Stellaris, PlanetSide 2, Mount And Blade, Factorio, Crusader Kings, Hearts of Iron, Skyrim
So, which of these games don't have an autosave feature? The original mount and blade I guess (not bannerlord). But the lack of it was hardly a feature. The way bannerlord does it would work well IMO.

Add an autosave timer, then trigger a save around that time, preferably at market exit/battle won/jumping, then put the campaign.autosave.zip in the save folder. Loading a save with an autosave newer than the manual save, gives a prompt with a choice of either option. Autosaving without interruption would be nice, but not necessary. This would seem like a good use of dev-time, IMO.

So if they're still only a 1-2 man team, then like Valheim, this isn't about "staying true to the game" but more about, greed means more money. They could find a skilled JAVA programmer or a group of programmers and fix a lot of these features, but why bother when you can let your community do all that work for you, while you rake in all that fat cash.

So with that in mind, maybe we just need to start a Go Fund Me or something, where we collect money and pay someone to develop an autosave feature, because at this point, I think that's the only way those of us who want it are going to get it.

It's not worth the time to explain what you want or what your specific issues are, but it's apparently worth the time to post rants with zero actionable complaints.

okay

My specific issues were that it doesn't explain systems well enough, so someone new can't really understand basic ideas, such as, how much fuel do ships use, how many supplies? Why are my supplies suddenly tanking for no apparent reason? How do you transport a new ship back to base when you don't have enough crew for it? What kind of planets should you try to develop. How do you manage your planets? What is a sustainable way to make money after your fleet grows? Why do I keep running out of supplies when there doesn't seem to be any reason for it? What kind of fleet composition am I supposed to use? Why are other fleets bringing in more ships than I am? Is that a setting? Why does my computer slow down playing this game, even when I allocated 5gb of ram to it through the files? Is a Ryzen 7 5800x with 16gb of ddr4 and a nividea 3080 not good enough to run it? Memory leak? Why do I keep getting memory leaks? How do you do ground combat? Why is the tutorial just so bad at showing you what to do? Why is the only tutorial in the game so underwhelming? Why do I want to punch the wall when I play it? What type of game is this supposed to be? Should I go on?

It's not worth the time. Long story short, what makes this game great is the modders. The game itself is okay imo, but the modding community makes it great. The reason this game is okay is because it lacks most of the basic amenities that other games have. It's like it doesn't know what it wants to be.

"You think you want autosave, but you really don't."

Literally the way they teach you is allowing something to happen, then saying "hey you just got hosed!". This is like letting a toddler walk into traffic so they learn to look both ways. In many cases it's a game over and you either have to restart, wondering wtf just happened, or suffer the consequences, because obviously a seasoned space captain wouldn't have the general knowledge to avoid this stuff. I mean you just spent years as a crewmember before becoming a captain right, but we can't expect that in that time you learned anything. Nope. This game is essentially just saying "<Bleep> you if you aint hardcore <bleep>! Going to throw you into the deep end and teach you how to swim!" I'm sure this will rile the fan bois, but honestly just miserable starting experience.

This game doesn't even teach you how to accept a mission! Literally no information on how to accept a mission. It's like the developers believe the duty to teach others to play should be done by the community, where the guides only show you how to cheese your way through the game, but not actually why you're cheesing or what you're actually doing. My friend spent twenty hours before he realized he needed to accept missions. This game is the poster child for horrible learning experiences. I can't even imagine the number of people, who like me, have just quit and said, not worth my time. I'm sure if I had more of a knowledgebase I could've enjoyed this game, but I am done with this and these developers. Adios amigos.

I only have one freaking request, a tutorial by the developers. Not some tutorial by some guy named Jack that's obsolete, but an actual tutorial that explains the game, ADVANCED tutorial and a better starting tutorial, because I have to say the one they have right now is just utter trash. I'm going to take a break from this game, because I feel putting anymore time into it is a sign of mental deficiency. I guess I was looking for an enjoyable game, not a bankruptcy simulator.

Bug Reports & Support / No Fleet Composition Data showing
« on: September 30, 2022, 07:30:01 AM »
I am unable to find my fleet composition data. I was not even aware that was a thing until a friend asked me what it was and I realized it wasn't there. Is this a bug or do I need to do something?

General Discussion / Re: Enemy doesn't attack my ship
« on: September 27, 2022, 07:03:44 PM »
I was using a Conquest Cruiser, A pirate mule, a small carrier, a frigates, a tanker, and a buffalo. The enemy had one destroyer, five or six frigates, and some shuttles. Essentially it just kept stalling and pulling back from my cruiser. I couldn't close on it and my CR went down, my systems stopped working and they took out my ships one by one. I tried the battle numerous times, the issue was always that I couldn't close and they would wait me out. I deleted the save in anger and uninstalled. Thanks for the response though.

General Discussion / Enemy doesn't attack my ship

So I'm losing battles because the enemy isn't attacking me and I can't catch up with them. The fight drags on and my CR depletes and everything breaks down and the battle is lost. I don't know what I'm doing wrong? Do I just need to take small fast ships for combat? Is there a Mod that makes the enemy AI more aggressive? This is what happens in Total War: Warhammer III as well, the AI wont attack unless it knows it can win. Smart AI, but miserable player experience. Are these games supposed to be fun or realistic?

Suggestions / Re: Someone make a combat tutorial please!
« on: September 25, 2022, 09:28:06 PM »
So I saw Cheese Sanvich made a combat tutorial that was nearly two hours long. I started watching it and realized nearly half the video was dedicated to hull mods and such. I watched the first hour and it was actually a very good tutorial on combat. I feel like I have a better understanding, flying still sucks so bad though. That will take getting used to.

Suggestions / Someone make a combat tutorial please!
« on: September 25, 2022, 08:54:17 PM »
The game's combat tutorial is lacking. I've done it several times and still can't figure out combat. I wish someone would actually make a combat tutorial detailing the basics of combat and making suggestions for new players. I absolutely hate combat in this game, mainly because I can't understand it. Again, if you feel up to the task, this might be a good youtube video for the community. Also, I've checked out what's there already and nothing is really a tutorial, more of a "you know the basics already" type of guide.
