A big weakness of SO fleets are point defense so you might want to incorporate some point defense officers with Locust missiles to get rid of fighter spam. Those can be an issue with the Doritos and carrier heavy bounties.

Using the new LP Venture, I put 2 jackhammers and 2 hammer torpedoes. After firing the same, they suddenly disappear from the weapon selection. Not sure if bug or intended, the ship still had ill-advised modifications d mod

I prioritize building in hull mods early game. But if I don't have any ships I like, I would mentor an officer even if he does not have the skills I like just so I can get 100% bonus exp and then level up faster.
