General Discussion / Re: Why not put it on Steam Early Access?
« on: September 11, 2023, 04:11:32 PM »
Alex ain't keen on 30% cut Steam takes. Alex been selling his game on the Black Market and bypassing that tariff this whole time, having to lose 30% of the cut is gonna sting.

The answer is literally on this thread, it could be 20 or even 25 dollar on steam (not uncomon for a game the size of Starsector). AND he could still continue to sell it the old way for those who want it.

If Starsector was really that niche little game some people here claim it to be then I would understand not wanting to go to a wider platform. But Starsector is faar more than that it is at the edge of the mind of a lot of people and the only thing holding it back is accesibility.

A good paralel I have is Wildermyth. It was also a rather ambitious project )tho nothing compared to Starsector) for a studio of few people. I would argue that it is also more niche. They started development around 2013 maybe earlier. But as soon as they could they took the effort to go to steam and popularize their product which in turn made it one of the more know indie rpg games today. For them going to steam had literally no drawbacks and I dont think it would have for Starsector.

As for save compability, some games do put up a disclaimer few weeks before the release of a new major version that saves will be incompatible, there is no reason Alex could not do this.

As for mod compability, Alex can still choose not to integrate workshop and people could install mods the old way as of now, but regardless it is literally never an expectation for mods to be compatible with newer versions of the game.

I think older forum users are actually just afraid of the change and the influx of thousands of new players. With all their concern they are subconsiusly gatekeeping the game.
What kind of world do you live in where you think users on a forum dictate Alex's thoughts? What a ridiculous claim.

I do not know how you came to the conclusion that I think the forum users dictate Alex's thoughts. I dont think they do. But I think that a lot of people here are needlesly afraid of a wider audience and this, I do not understand.

As for what advantages would a steam EA would bring. Money, a load of money. I don't know how many copies have been sold and at what times but i know a LOT of people who didn't buy it beacause it is not avalible on steam or gog (or even on epic games store). People and especially 20-40 adults with disposable income (the main audiance of any game) REALLY love convinience.

Compare for instance the active user number on the unnofical discord, compared to this forum. It is many times more. Simply beacause discord is a mainstraim social media platform they probably use for a lot of other things and not some dodgey looking website straight outta 2007. (I prefer the forum for exchange of ideas but still...)

I think the extra revenue that Alex would gain from steam right now is probably enough to hire a part time developer to fasten up the work or for simply mainaining the steam sales, probably even more.

99% of people who play this game know it from Sseth or the Spiffing Brit, imagine now that all the normies who watch these channels could simply buy this game on their preferred platform. Imagine if there would be dozens more content creators like them who review and advretise the game as it would be more accesible for them as well.

Absolutely agree that it should be steam early acces for years now. The game is faaar more playable and has faar more vontent than most early acces titles that are doing good.

I think older forum users are actually just afraid of the change and the influx of thousands of new players. With all their concern they are subconsiusly gatekeeping the game.

Edit: also Alex puts updates on Twitter every few month, he can just post those to steam as well so everybody sees that "yeah work is still ongoing, cool"

Whereas the Mk. IX is probably more useful as a generalist weapon (it does have decent damage/shot),

Stop staying that or Alex will nerf Mk. IX lol

Have something catastrophic happen if you plan poorly enough to overload while SO is on. Because really, that's got to be one of the events the safeties are there for.

I really like this idea. Make it active but if something goes wrong you dead. Loosing hull points instead of overload maybe.

Yeah I even reccomend that for a first "unmodded" playtrough

This is just another mechanic needlesly complicating an already complicated game.

-50% missile ROF seems like a very high penalty for saving 5 OP (cruiser size). I'm assuming that, say, ITU, won't have any penalties and you can just S-mod that instead.

It seems to be ridiculusly overtuned, halving missile rof practically makes this mod unusable with while built in.

People have been asking for a way to mark systems or something on the map. It would be sooo simple to implement. But instead we get overly complex stuff like the new "events" graviton rework and Missile Autoloader.
I think implementing a marking system would require fewer characters in code than the descriptions of the new hullmod xd.
