Suggestions / Re: Autosave - It really is necessary
« on: February 14, 2023, 06:07:45 PM »saving in the background isn't how the game works currently and i suspect that to make such behaviour possible it would take considerable work on fundamental parts of the game. Realistically an autosave function would just do saving as we do it currently, which means interrupting the flow of gameplay and taking a bit of time.If autosave was on, I would expect the game to save the game in the background like every other game or program that saves in the background periodically or after a notable event. If all the autosave did was remind the player to save but not actually save the game, then it is not really autosave, is it. I would think that reminders would be displayed when autosave is off or simply not available, which is what I usually do not want, barring unusual exceptions like a major turning point once or twice in the game. (Something like "After entering this dungeon, you will be unable to leave until the boss is dead. Save your game now!")if an autosave system gets implemented i'd like something the autosave mod currently has, namely a setting where it doesn't actually autosave but reminds you periodically when you haven't saved.I do not think I would want constant reminders if I do not save when the game thinks I should save. I do not want the game to act like nagware.Bolded the important bit. There is zero reason why a setting wouldn't be implemented if it would help a great chunk of players.
I like the notifications bc they don't do that so i get to choose when to save but don't forget it all the time
I've tried this game multiple times over the past few years and I just deleted it from my computer yet again. The lack of autosave and the ways saves work in Starsector belongs to an era of games that has been rightly left in the past. And no, notifications don't count as autosave. I own the game, but it's always been way to unpolished for my liking. If background saving can't be implement that doesn't matter. The game needs actual autosave. And if the alternatives are between the game pausing to autosave because of how badly saves work in space games like this one and me loosing progress because I didn't autosave then frankly that's a game dev problem, not a user problem. This isn't Dark Souls, frustrating the person playing is not part of the intended gameplay and a lack of autosave is frustrating enough that I just deleted the game and won't be trying it for around another year.
