General Discussion / System degradation and depopulation

Got back into SS a like a week ago, so many new thing to experience!

A few questions though:
Looks like pirates became more viscous and numerous in 0.9.1a, they raid faction systems pretty hard and often, but it seems like factions (like Hegemony or Tri-Tachyon) do not have near enough fleets to fight back. I tried to help out and lost 3 fleets, they just keep coming with large ones one after another. After their stations and some planets being constantly sieged by pirates, they degrade and and depopulate.

Is it working as intended? In previous version I remember those factions had pretty big fleets and pirates got hunted and shut down by them pretty actively and successfully around their control zones. Are there ways to counter pirate activities and expansion, other than direct combat? Will those systems and station be repopulated again by NPCs? Do NPCs ever expand in far away systems, establishing colonies?

1. I'm not sure if I remember it right, but I could swear that on previous version we were getting much more Procurement Contracts than in new one, and also I remember factions gave missions if I was neutral to them as well. Now I need to rack up some rep to get more of those contracts to pop up. Might be wrong here, since I've been playing heavily modded SS though... Those missions serve more like roleplaying purpose to me, income isn't impressive, but I just enjoy hauling cargo across the galaxy.
So, is there a way to make mission pop up on neutral rep too and get actually more of those?

2. Survey Missions are very cool, but only at the beginning. Since galaxy got like WAAAY bigger, I have to drag along tanker just to have enough fuel to run around with average sized fleet+. In prev. version I never had any need for tanker and my fleet was enormous. With this, survey missions kinda fall off. Bounties are still better profit and if I go with small fleet for Survey with tanker, it's just pretty risky venture.
Are you guys still doing Survey mission in mid and lategame?

3. Again, can't say for sure if it was vanilla feature or mod (probably mod), but I remember in late game huge pirate armadas were hunting me down. Usually they were trashed but sometimes it was actually fun when after hard bounty, you get hit by one of these armadas with your CR lowered and some ships heavily damaged. It was awesome battle for survival. I think I'm pretty late in the game right now, but I didn't see one such event.
Does it exist? And if not, is there a way to implement it somehow?

I'm still holding off from SS 0.8a because some of my fav mods haven't been updated yet and basically waiting for 8.1 at this point I guess... To get some fix in terms of space-flight-explore-murder gave SPGW a shot. Back in a day I spent some time with SPG2 and even made some small mods for it. Game is okay, nothing fancy, but has few very good sides (like all-dimensional combat).

Have been playing Warlords few hours and the biggest letdown I spotted right away are explosion SFX and almost non-existent sound. Guess I was spoiled by SS in that regard with it's spectacular side in this matter. Oh well, guess will keep playing, graphics look nice, modding support is there and more content is on the way.

What are your impressions, folks? And which one you think is better? Now, I know they are quite different but still, which one you enjoy more?

Is there a way to shrink weapon lists in combat mode somehow? This it one of the main reasons I don't like flying big battleships, weapon ui take upon literally half of the screen... Why not just pop weapons you currently use instead of highlighting one? I'm sure most players would know what groups they assigned on what key.
Also curious, in case I missed something, are there any interface tweaks coming in 0.8 which may address this stuff?

General Discussion / Iron mode with 10k and single freighter...

Is that really impossible or I just had a streak of bad luck?
Trying to roleplay and focus on trading/missions. I know bounty hunting is easier to build up funds, but starting out small feels more appealing to me. Main problem is that when you accept a contract, there's pretty big chance that you will be jumped by pirates as soon as you get into the hyperspace and usually there's no time to react. Since my starting freighter is completely unfitted for combat, and with 10k there's not much you can buy in terms of fleet, plus you really need that money for contracts to buy goods. Once I've been lucky enough to build around 100k, bought 2 heavy frigates and destroyer, but was jumped when I spent rest of my credits on goods I was carrying with lucrative contract and pirate fleet was way too big to handle, so I basically spawned with nothing in some crappy frigate.
I think I'm on my 15th or 20th restart, feeling like a complete masochist. :-X

Btw, is there a way to get mining ability without Nexerelin mod?

Modding / Need advice for mods

I'm new to Starsector and I wanna say that this game is absolutely amazing, but I have a big problem: I'm completely lost in mods.
Had a test run with SS+ which I liked a lot, and now I just need generally ship mods... lots of ship mods, but to the point that the game won't break and loading times will be appropriate.
Currently trying to use most mods from the list right here (at least updated and non-broken ones):

Is that okay to slap all these mods together or should I pick only particular ones from the list? Sorry, it's pretty hard to figure all this content out for the first timer.

Also there are several statements that particular mod is 'integrated' in SS+, what does it mean exactly? Is there somewhere a list or pack of mods that are fully compatible and recommended to use with SS+?

Any tips would be welcome.
