Hi!

Is there a way to limit the maximum market size in the current version to 7 or 8?
I have to admit I changed my mind about this since the 0.95 notes came out.

Suggestions / What the game could learn from FlashTrek

Hi Alex!

First of all, this is a wonderful game, I really like it.
The game is of excellent quality, however, I would like to point out some areas of potential improvement.

SS is very similar to another top-down sandbox space shooter: a game from the era of flash gaming, the FlashTrek series.
I highly recommend everyone to try it because it has very similar mechanics:

So, there are a few things that FlashTrek does better imo, despite being an overall lesser quality game (bcs it's a free flash game created years ago):

  • You can choose a faction to (in the game with buying their flag) establish new colonies in their name.
    Maybe in SS we could implement something like this: for example, the player joins the Hegemony and colonizes the Sector for them.
    The exact reward for doing this is up to the Devs, I can imagine some material reward or governorship or something like this.
    Bottom line: if you are willing to submit yourself your reward should be lower but the risks are, too.
    This could be a nice addition, expanding the player's options and creating a more sandboxy sandbox game.
  • Acces to top-secret ships. In FlashTrek there are a few easter-egg ships, only accessible in very backwater black project sites.
    For example a secret Romulan Star Base at Remus offers the Scimitar. This kind of extra content could be a nice addition.
  • Acces to top-secret genocidal weapons with special permission to use it. For example, player can buy permission to use the Thalaron projector without prestige drop.
  • In FalshTrek the factions sometimes claim new planets. This would contribute to a more living and breathing Sector.
  • In FalshTrek sometimes new factions arise. These are small empires but nevertheless make the universe feel more living. SS could implement something like this. I think there is two ways to do this, both should be implemented.
     Frist: while exploring the player could make contact with small isolated empires living outside the core worlds. After establishing contact these empires should act like other factions, declaring wars and expanding by claiming new systems nearby etc. These empires are obviously procedurally generated.
     Second: there should be a small chance that a new faction rises on a previously unclaimed but explored planet. So after discovering the system these factions should arise time and again and establish themselves just like the player could create his own faction.
     
  • In FalshTrek the only way to conquer the galaxy is to destabilize every planet (either for yourself or on behalf of another faction). This is a problem in SS too (although the way of destabilizing a planet is different). The player and other factions should be able to conquer or annex or coerce into joining other planets and factions.
     
  • Finally in FalshTrek you can send an away team to any planet you visit and there is a chance that random events happen, improving/harming your relationship with the given faction. This could be a nice addition too, making the Sector feel more real. For concrete ideas, you can check the game.
    The most extreme for example is that some planets (they are treated badly by their lords in ST lore) can declare for you! (Of course this has a very low chance.) But most of the time they just change your prestige a couple of points.
