the is an option in the settings that inverts shift. this will let you have strafe on by default and shift will then turn it off (opposite action).

GIMP's mirror mode can be found under Windows-Dockable Dialogs- Symmetry painting (has a butterfly)

Once your click on it you can set up your mirror axis in the box at the top left.
