Just want to say that I hear you. The campaign "progression", as it were, is nowhere near fleshed out yet, and it's unlikely to get too fleshed out until all (or at least most of) the planned features are in. Still, I think it's improving from version to version, but yeah, I basically share your opinion of how things are right now - and it's very much "known issue" rather than "intended" :)

I'm glad to see that Alex immediately weighed in on this topic.  I also logged in today to look around to see if anyone else had this issue.  I love this game to death, but I get the most enjoyment out of it by restarting my game over and over once I reach "that certain point" the OP was talking about.

Keep up the good work Alex and Co.

It is good day to randomly check on the status of Starfarer.

I also give a huzzah!  Patches mean progress, progress means...uhh...game be gooder!

I feel a little silly starting this topic now, but I'm glad that its provided some good discussion.

I didn't realize you guys had so many pre-orders!  I know that using a digital distributor service does involve a lot of contractual agreements.  Still, it was just a thought.

In that case, I'd say just pump out the content!  It would be really cool if you could get all the way through to your release on just pre-orders.  GOGO!  I'm excited to see more stuff.

Hey!  Dev team!  You know how you're trying to get preorders for your awesome game?  You should try alpha funding on Desura!  Maybe you have already thought of this...but in any case, I would like to say that if its the right thing for you guys, you should totally do it.  More exposure is always a good thing.

Besides, you would be grouped together with other big league alpha/beta indie titles like Project Zomboid, Xenonauts, and Overgrowth!  =O

GO FOR IT! =D

Modding / Re: Starting on EVE sprites...

I think that the fact that you're making 2D sprites instead of 3D models is different enough.  Its like an entirely different medium.

Sadly, I'm pretty sure this isn't the case. I don't remember it off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure that there's copyright cases out there in which changing something from 2D to 3D or 3D to 2D was not sufficiently "transformative" to avoid infringing.

BAH!  I'd fight it if it was my choice.  If you're doing something in a vastly different medium it would still be a derivative piece, but not a copy.  I'm not sure how that would work with copyright laws however.  =(

I have to say, your name and your post go rather well together.

You thought about this a lot!  I am also annoyed at the experience system, but I'm not sure if its the final version. I am a fan of the experience system in Total War, and your suggestion reminds me of it.  In the game, it does seem to be suggested that there will be officers, but it would be neat to see regular crewmembers get promoted on the merit of their simulated valor in combat.

The idea of using a dedicated fast fleet to deny the enemy any FP does seem a little cheesy to me.  I'm not good enough to have realized that tactic on my own, but that does not seem like a glorious way to do battle!!

I'm interested in what other people think.  I largely agree with you though.

I can't wait to see more ships!  I don't think there's a drone system in place, but I know that there will be special abilities like EMP and whatnot in later editions of the game.  Alex said so. =O

General Discussion / Re: Legal Question: ToS-Related

I assume there's some system in place that would prevent this, couldn't you just give out your particular key to all kinds of random people and let them try out the game?

There isn't. My firewall would've alerted me if the game attempted to 'call home' and verify the key, as far as I can tell nothing of the sort took place. And yes, you could do that, if you were a total scumbag.

I'm actually very happy to see a developer that treats its customers with respect and dignity for once, and not as scumbags by default.

The sad thing is that there are a lot of scumbags out there. =(

I figured there wasn't any real DRM...but its interesting to see whats been discussed here.

I always assume the ToS is just the regular "one licence, dont distribute, etc." because I also assume theres no way they could release an abusive ToS without some legal repercussion.

I run SF in Steam to have the chat up and to take screenshots. =)

Some of the earlier ships look kind of lazy, but there are some really good frakenships. =)

Hey guys, first time poster here.
[snip]

I like that idea, it would give you control of your carriers...but it does go against the whole "passive command" that this game has going for it.  It would be really fun to be able to use your strike craft like missiles though.  Somehow it would be nice to have a more direct role with your strike craft if you control a carrier.

I guess the middle ground would be drone craft.  They dont have weapons but use their short range drones to kill stuff...but we already have the Wasp squadron...so idk.  I like the idea of a drone frigate/cruiser though.  It makes me think of Homeworld.

[snip]
... "I sit on top of your ship and pew pew till my friends are dead!" (for some reason it had an outrageous french accent in my head :P) ...

Is it weird that I also read that with a silly French accent too?

General Discussion / Legal Question: ToS-Related
« on: February 23, 2012, 07:55:26 PM »
I just re-installed .5 on one of my computers and I never recall even clicking the ToS box.  Maybe there wasn't even a ToS. Regardless, I want to find out about installing the game on multiple computers.

I have my desktop that I play on, and my laptop that I work on (but also like to play Starfarer on =P).  I used the same key for both installs, and as far as I can tell I'm being reasonable about the use of the game.

I know that if Starfarer was released on Steam, I wouldn't be able to run two copies under one key...but I'm just curious.

Also, while I assume there's some system in place that would prevent this, couldn't you just give out your particular key to all kinds of random people and let them try out the game?

Derp, the first one definitely looked a lot like the mothership.  =(

There definitely needs to be some downside to storing ships.  Eventually you'd have this freaking hugetastic fleet thats just sitting around in storage doing nothing.

Maybe if you could send your lieutenants off to do missions for you, you'd have less reason to store tons of capital ships.

also do you guys see the typo  in the weapon description

Durrr. Yes, thank you. Not actually a typo, the text is too big for the space it's got - let me fix that up.

Scuzie? I see you have ammunito! Babadabupi?! I can speak Italian too.
