I agree, I haven't experienced any yet either, though maybe that's because im avoiding the 'grizzled spacer' thingie
Starsector 0.98a is out! (03/27/25)
For AI control you can give retribution cautious personality so that it avoids capitals but will attack cruisers and smaller.
Here’s 5 different builds and a bonus meme build. Hullmods for each of them based on if you’re piloting it or not. Player wants extended shield and accel shield. Ai wants front shield and extended shield. Player wants maximum maneuvering bonuses, ai just wants a few of them. This is because the player can spin and run away with orion drive with the retribution but the AI won’t.
All of these builds enjoy smod flux distributor.
Hardened shields are best for hit and run tactics against weaker targets or distracted stronger targets. Heavy armor is best for winning 1v1 fights against stronger targets until you’re out of armor. Choose which you prefer. I prefer shields.
Point Defense elite skill, 3 devastators, 2 HMG, 2 thumpers, 5 light dual mg, 2 mining laser/vulcan on rear. Sabots optional. If AI piloted, consider replacing the thumpers with HMG or LDMG or mining blasters or something. The goal is to shoot the thumpers in sync with the 3 devastators. Massive damage.
Gunnery implants and ballistic mastery, 3 gauss, s-mod armored weapon mounts, s-mod reinforced flux conduit. For kiting enemy ships but also refusing to allow them to run away from the gauss. Very easy for the player to pilot while having good damage. Player likely doesn’t care for maneuvering bonuses, won’t need to spin to retreat, that’s why it’s easy to pilot.
Ballistic Ranfefinder build - 2 mjolnirs, 1 devastator, 5-9 (optional downsize mediums) light autocannons, use arbalest/heavy Autocannon/heavy mauler/hveldriver/flaks in mediums. I prefer using downsized LAC but it’s up to you. You could replqce 1 mjolnir with hephag if the flux is tight for you.
Player exclusive build, Broadside build for easier spin and retreats. s-mod magazine, 2 storm needlers, 4 heavy maulers, 5 Vulcans or whatever. Put the storm needlers asymmetrical on one side. Attack on your broadside, then spin away and retreat when your flux gets high note: if you use s-mod gyro, the storm needlers shred frigates like paper.
5th build is similar to the above build but uses BRF and mining blasters. Choose what you prefer.
Meme build: missile specialization elite, 6 antimatter srms in the smalls, maximize your capacitors as much as possible, use storm needlers.
This mod works just fine in 0.97.
Is there a wiki or something? I find the official website being coy about what exactly this mod does in it's entirety doesn't really make me want to download it
Vaults of Knowledge: adds a tech tree and many different industries, most are upgrades to old ones but some are new, as well as changing the equipment/ship production system to not just be "up to X credits".
Virtues of Society: adds some events and event chains, similar to Stellaris. Short term buffs/debuffs for the colony in question, associated flavor text/story.
Cryosleeper: lets you repair and move cryosleepers to your colonies so you don't have to just colonize in the space around them, adds an extra big cryosleeper that will increase colony size to size 8 that generates as an extra cryosleeper rather than a replacement.
I didn't make the guide, not sure why you are crediting meI use this guide extensively, is there any chance it will be updated for all the new ships that have been added to the game?
I just got the game recently and have made a lot of use out of this guide. Cheers for making it. Hope its updated soon.
The solution in this thread might help:

(The chief difference from what you're doing I think is setting the override to 1280x800 rather than 768?)
