Title: Wayward Terran Frontier
Post by: McSpiffy on January 10, 2014, 01:06:07 PM
Hey guys I found a new space game like Starsector or Spaz but in this one you can design the inside of your ship as well as add other types of crafts to the game. I used a few of the ships from Starsector to see how a light mod might work and i'm telling you it works great. You can also tear ships in half and fly the half that still works, the lay out reminds me of how building ships in Stardrive works but feels more like Starsector as far as combat. Its in open alpha 3 atm of writing this and I'm telling you its a blast! So I'm going to leave the link here for you top down space ship enthusiasts! Also one more thing to add the dev is planing on making it a multi-player game with servers you can host.
Here's the link: http://www.wtfrontier.com/  (http://www.wtfrontier.com/) ;)

I playd it a little yesterday evening and must say that it seems to be very complicated, but also extremly fun :) I will have to spent more time on this one to learn play properly. For everybody who feels that way - on youtube there are nice tutorials done by dev.

I think the sprites in that game are ugly, and we should help them with our awesome mod ships.

Well, stock ships first, cuz I found some PNGs on the wiki which can be used pretty much right away.

I've played quite a bit of this game, and highly recommend it. Goduranus, you can probably find the PNGs for just about any starsector ship right in the core files.

Yea I've used PNG versions of S.P.A.Z ships as well as some stock Starsector ships. :-D I've been having such a blast.

That's sizable amount he's requesting. [sarcasm]Not that living in a place with heat, water and accessible food is important or anything...[/sarcasm]

I might donate if he adds in the option to have randomly generated sprites for the hull you lay out. That would be mucho cool.

I agree, trying my best to help spread the word. I have been having a lot of fun with the bare bones tech demo. I mean it is wicked awesome the 'simulation' factor. I love how the weapons eat your ship apart, how you can see that happen from the inside, from the outside, so cool. I love how your oxygen is gone when the hull is breached and the crew slowly die...I put walls around my control centre in the event of hull breach, they breathed out the air in their apparently, it turned red too and they eventually died :)

This game would be so awesome multiplayer but it just as fun a sandbox game single player. The ship building is fun, and I just love the element the internal aspect adds. I am looking for a pilot for multiplayer if interested! The AI at this point can't be expected to cut it. Or gunner would be good!

This game looks awesome. A really cool combination of ideas. I'd pick it up just to check it out, and of course custom pimp my own ship, and fly aimlessly through space.

It is the witching hour! (not here, admittedly, but somewhere!)

It is All Hallow's Eve!

Thus, at this time and in this place, I perform the blackest of Thread Necromancy!

No, wait! Before you get the torches and the pitchforks out, have a look at these also, I can't embed them as they are compressed video, but there's a couple of stills:

This one looks so much better in motion - that ship isn't FIRING the beam, it's being CUT IN HALF.

You see, Wayward Terran Frontier has also risen from the grave, and is now looking pretty amazing.  The scope has been cut down but the art has been given a big upgrade.  The ship creator is now up as a free alpha, and there's significant work being done to create a singleplayer experience worth buying.

http://www.wtfrontier.com/?p=913 (http://www.wtfrontier.com/?p=913)
Here's more details, and also the original home of those links - it also has a 22 minute long video of the dev playing what he's got of the game so far, which is worth watching.  He has combat inside ships working, boarding, all sorts of stuff.

Do they not look relevant to our interests?

Maybe the game would have made kickstarter if it had that art style back them.

But yea I've also been following this game and between it's deep micromanaging and interesting damage system there's a lot of potential.
Looks like FTL could obtain a handsome successor.

Game is quite demanding CPU wise, that being said:

From what I can see it uses multicores for various tasks, somewhere I read it is using threads for ship breaking and similar tasks.

On unrelated note, latest update show ship skin unique for all backers:

They missed an opportunity imo,  the moment the game was funded they should have come forth with at least concept art
showing what they meant by spinal guns, Evamissions, improved combat depth and such.
Instead they didn't and just went with inertia.

Title: Re: Wayward Terran Frontier
Post by: Sabaton on December 05, 2014, 03:58:10 AM
Ship building is easyer this time around, you have an interface that shows power sources as blue, conduits as yellow and powered/unpowered modules as green/red.
To power a module you must drag a power conduit from a reactor to said module, keep in mind that everything  has an input point that you must connect to, its rather obvious.
Also conduits behave rather strange, click only once to place a 4 junction, hold click and drag to place a continuous line.
Place a command point and link guns and such by placing a node, numbered square, near said module and another near command point.
Your character can only walk in rooms, rotate stuff with Q, add support structures if your ship falls appart, add more reactors if needed, etc.
Just follow the interface and you should be fine, theres a button center top for it.

Sadly I too really fell out of love for that game because of all those barriers between you and the fun part of the game: designing big ships and get them into troubles. I don't want to grind for hours with every new start before I can finally get some enjoyment. All I want to get the blueprints of all their components when analyzing a ship so that I can immediately toy with the layout.

I have a few questions about the game that I really should be asking on their forum, but hey, I'm more familiar with this one and there's already a discussion thread here, so hope someone would take the time:

Is there a crew on your ship? Or are you alone piloting everything? If there is, how is crew management done?

You guys are mentioning ship customization, how does that work? Ship exterior shapes are pretty fixed I'm guessing (with premade sprites), can you change the interior? How much freedom do you have in doing so?

They shut down their own forums so right now only the steam forums are up.
You start out alone and can eventually hire others for free
As for the ship customization, it is really REALLY specific. I would say that it is somewhat similar to Factorio. You have to route power around the ship through capacitors. The interior is completely customizeable AS LONG as you have the blueprints for ALL the parts. If you don't, you can't remove them at all, even if you capture the ship and bring it in to be disassembled and scanned in...

WTF is still a demonstration that building a tech idea (completely modifiable 2D ships where all the parts are meaningful) is completely different than making it Fun.  Reassembly did pretty much the same thing, but it had a good-enough core game design and premise; there was something to do and meaningful goals (especially building epic death-fleets to inflict on random people online, lol).

I’ll be the first to say that WTF has gotten better than the first time I played it, where it was a poorly-optimized mess.  But it’s still not very fun, because the mechanics are still broken if you even slightly care about optimizing your designs; it remains fun in theory but largely a drama-less chore to play (and the Blueprint barrier didn’t help, it just added grind).

From what I've seen on videos actually piloting a ship looks nowhere near as fun as it is in SS. Just collision-less jousting and pixel-hunter style shooting.

It seems like this is dead in the water but after talking with the Dev it seems like they are in this for a long run, like Alex for StarSector, they are just seemingly overwhelmed with the project....Dev's are not doing a good job at updating the game or communicating, even their website disappeared but they say they are working on it as well...apparently they are struggling a lot, there's an update up and hanging in the air for several months now. Also they are planning to have a separate multipalyer game, apparently with discount or even free version for owners of WTF. We'll see. Jan seems like a genuinely and passionate guy just like Alex here. They need to put some life in the game, because right now it's pretty much a techdemo, maybe with the next update it will happen and we gonna have something to play in parallel with Starsector.

This. It has some basic core gameplay issues. If flying the ship is awkward and you can do all of this crazy build-your-ship stuff, you probably have some wrong priorities.
