Title: Hah! No loot for you!
Post by: Sarolveldruk on September 14, 2013, 09:27:26 PM
I realize this might be more fitting for the Bugs section, but since I'm not sure if it is a bug at all, I figured General Discussions is as good a place as any to discuss this particular game mechanic.

New update, new features, I'm excited.

I install the game, start a new file, get busy blowing stuff up and figuring out the new UI. Eventually I notice a re-occurring problem: I have no chance at recovering any loot from the wreckage of a battle when the opposing fleet immediately decides it wants another go. This happens a lot when I'm running down pirate supply fleets; they think they can fight back with a total of FOUR Tarsus freighters and an undermanned Enforcer. I can either run away and get no loot, or entertain them for a little while longer by engaging the remains of their fleet, and hopefully get even MOAR loot. I chose the latter, which resulted in the battle resolving after less than five seconds had passed. Alright...

So the battle's over (again) and we're back to square one. The only difference is that I can no longer loot the wreckage of their fleet from the first battle for monies and supplies, and since none of the remaining ships showed up for the second battle, there was nothing there as well. Thanks to that I was left to ration what supplies I had left and hope to find another fleet to tackle to get back on my feet.

So my question for this: is this intended? It seems kinda flawed if you ask me.

what?

I thought you get all the loot for all the battles in the encounter...

am I wrong?

The very idea that they would fight, then retreat is a bug though, I think. Something about the campaign AI thinking "LETS FIGHT!" and the battle AI thinking "RUN AWAY!". Alex is aware of that one I believe

also: I never ran into this but theoretically, can you stand down after each battle until they run themselves out of CR?

Yeah, I reported this bug, and someone else reported it before I did. I'm pretty sure you get the loot for every encounter as long as you win the final encounter.

not stand down but if you win the tactical battle you can harry them as they run away for extra CR hit until they're out of CR for a pursue phase

Yes, you definitely do.

There's an odd recurring issue where a fleet chooses to engage you after an initial engagement with its remaining ships but then never deploys any of them so you automatically win the engagement but are unable to loot the ships because they're "posturing for an counter" or something to that effect.

Had the same fleet do it to me 10+ times before I finally disengaged but was never given the chance to loot them.  Even re-engaging was no use, same issue.

It's not impossible that they were retreating but... It would end the battle maybe 6-10 seconds after it began with no " X ship has retreated" message ever showing up, it seemed too fast.

send whatever ship has the most CR and the least CR per deploy each time then harry their reserves until they flee. then pursue as normal. it's a known bug being worked on/already fixed

Worse! I ran out of supplies and finally chased down a fleet, easily obliterated them but the fleeing two wings of fighters forced me a second round agaisnt my.... SHIPS WITH NO CR SO I CAN'T DEPLOY ANY AND GAME OVER. Yeah... This who CR thing needs to be toner WAY down, right now it's not fun at all, all i do is worrying about supplies, getting supplies, i quit playing EVE Online because ISK is all that matters and leveling up is too slow and dependent on ISK. Same thing happening here.

@frag971: Just FYI, the enemy should flee in this case if they didn't have any reserves. That is to say, if they have some combat-ready ships and you don't, but all their ships retreated from the last engagement, they'll continue to flee anyway. If that's not happening, this is a bug. If those fighter wings were in reserve, though, then, ah, best press F9.

not sure if that should be a bug.... It's kinda like

-"RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!!"
-*runs away
-"hey look... What's happening?"
-"I dunno... looks like they're too tired to fight..."
-"should we turn around?"
-"sure"
-"IT"S PAYBACK TIME *****ES!!!!"

If it's just a few wings of damaged fighters you should be fine in a retreat anyways...

Also did you just exhaust ALL your ships in a fight (not just to degraded performance but actually to the point of undeployable)? That sounds like a mistake to begin with... Always hold reserves man.....

I've only seen this happen in fleets with a lot of ships mothballed, like the Pirate Plunder Fleets. After the initial engagement they'll be left with a few Tarsus freighters left and a ton of ships in mothball, and apparently that makes them think they can still take my fleet. I get around this by repeatedly harrying and deploying a low tech ship that I purposely leave out of the first fight so that I have something on the field when they automatically retreat. It's annoying, but you'll get your plunder after you run the freighters out of CR and finish the pursuit encounter.

pretty sure that would be the bug, that they fly into a battle they know they'll lose

if they're flying spare fighters into a fleet with no combat ready vessels... That's another story

Alright so i just had this bug happen to me.

This is how it went down.

1) engaged Pirate Plunder Fleet.
2) Won, however several pirates fled the field
3) Didnt bother to continue pressing, so moved to Salvage.
4) The pirates attacked again. (in dialogue. never got kicked to overworld in this whole encounter)
5) defeated one ship
6) combat complete
7) move to salvage
8) The pirate fleet attacks!
9) Pirates field no ships
10) Combat complete!
11) Move to salvage
12) The Pirate Fleet attacks!
13) pirate fleet fields no ships
14) combat complete!
15) Move to salvage.
Ad nauseam

If you choose to harry as opposed to salvage, the same battle opens. opposing fleet deploys no ships, combat over.
If you choose to stand down. you get no loot from any of the fights.

known bug and fixed, for now just harry them until the freighters are at 0 cr then a standard pursuit phase will begin. takes four or five rounds though. I usually send out either the lowest deployment cost ship like thunders or else my non-combat ships if I need to save CR for the pursuit phase
