Title: Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition
Post by: Axiege on January 16, 2013, 12:31:20 PM
I have begun an LP of Dark Souls and would like any tips or tricks or advice the forums can offer. I'm not looking for a walkthrough, but I know one problem with the game is it does not explain itself well.

Episode 1 is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOScwh2sWxM&feature , thanks for watching! ;D

During the Awesome Games Done Quick marathon, someone did a speed run of the game in about an hour and a half or so. They gave some interesting facts and tips while they played, so you should watch that (not just for the tips, it's just well worth your time to watch). Can't remember where to get the footage of the marathon atm.

If I watch that then it'll all be spoiled, I'm looking for advice on like what kinds of weapons or good for what situations, what sort of tools I should keep with me, what stats I should invest in, stuff like that.

Also, episode 2 anyone? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdK5JMxDdH8&feature

You need to find the Wand of Gamelon. In the third boss battle, if you press A+B on the keyboard AND controller at the same time, Link will appear, and the boss will become a dodongo that is promptly bombed. The dodongo drops the Wand of Gamelon - insta kill anything but one use.

early in game it's smart to get the drake sword wich you can get if you shoot off the red dragons tail. also most of the enemies/bosses who have tails will drop a weapon or item if you cut it off, same counts for the hydras but then you need to cut off all the heads

Do not listen to him ^^^ this is a good idea but ruins the fun of the game(getting the drake sword). Really i would try out each weapon and see what you like the most. If i recomend any, the Halbird are pretty good as they act like spears but have a large range circular attack.

Must have for skills: Vitality, think of it as a being able to take more hits. Endurence is ok, but focus of vitality. As for everything else it depends what weapons you use. Weaspons have scailing, whichg is in there stats it should show a symbol and a c,b,a or something showing the scaling, which is what skills raise the power of that weapon. One final thing in the past episodes you have been 1 handing your weapon, try two handing, as it raises the damage output on it.

Also, yes another tip, the master key doesnt open a lot but is helpful for some doors, very little but some

Well I just commented on your video (episode 2) and I found this lol
I'll just copy paste...

"Jumping into Dark Souls are you?
A few tips.
endurance and vitality are a must, you should usually have at least 40 points in each as you level up.
Upgrade your weapons and armor as soon as possible, although a 5-10 damage or a 2 defense increase in your equipment might not seem as helpful as increasing you level, it will make a huge difference in survivability.
Lastly, keep fast roll...that? is all.
Good luck, have fun, and I look forward to more Dark Souls from you :)"

Also I would suggest not getting Drake Sword, you'll get a little more outta the game that way, also as an extra tip, I would suggest not getting weapons based around dealing bleed damage as most enemies in the game won't take bleed damage.
Pyromancy is usually good for new players (sorcery works too, but that requires you to put points into knowledge), you'll find a guy in tattered armor (the armor that the pyromancy class has) later on in a place called the depths, he'll appear in firelink shrine after you meet him and from there he'll give you a pyromancy glove and will let you upgrade it for souls, he also has pyromancies that you can buy from him.
Again, good luck, have fun and Know that you have people watching your Dark Souls videos (and Starsecter videos...I'm still not used to that name).

You seem very confused in this new episode. So your strength is the member that is next to the word strength in the skills, next to vitality and stuff. And how you see the requirements is by hovering over the weapon and pressing X. It will also show you if it's better than the weapon your holding ATM. You might want to level up strength as it seems like you want to have bigger weapons so you new that.

External HDD you say? You've come to the right man!

Depends on what you mean by cheep... The 100$ Western Digital My Passport 1TB USB 3 with USB 2 is supposedly superb.

Or

The Western Digital Elements Desktop 3TB 140$ will probably give you more storage for the price. But its USB 2 though. But the speed is 500Mbps so its good :)

Justin, I expect with a $1,000 dollar laptop you'll have an additional 2.5", so chuck in a 1/2TB slim HDD.

How exactly do Humanity levels work? Where do I upgrade equipment? Really, the poor self-explanation is the only thing I can fault the game for right now.
Title: Re: Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition
Post by: misterjscape on January 24, 2013, 09:41:55 PM
The humanity "levels" on the top left of your screen is the current amount of humanity you are using, all that effects is how often items drop, your curse resistance (you'll learn what happens when you are cursed later on, just know it is bad), and your physical resistance.

Humanity can also be used to give yourself humanity, which is to turn yourself human.  Being human does a number of things, it lets you kindle bonfires, which increases the amount of estus flask you get from resting near that bonfire, lets you access online features, one being the ability to summon other people to your world to help you fight the area boss, another more notable one being that it allows the game to let people invade your world.  The invader's goal is to kill you.  Essentially, becoming human puts you in online mode.

You upgrade weapons and armor at a blacksmith with titanite, you will meet your first blacksmith soon.

Edit.  btw, remember the place you died?  Before going past that small bridge there is a bonfire to the left of it past the plank of wood.  Also the shield you have right now is good for parrying, try and do it more often.  Parrying is kinda weird, you don't parry where the weapon looks like it is hitting, you parry the enemy as though you are trying to parry his fist. You can parry anyone who is humanoid and not five times your size. You'll start to really enjoy the game once you get past the undead burg, don't give up on the game!
...I wanna watch your whole let's play :)

This video might help explain stuff. I pre watched it and it has no spoilers

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=c21w40cHQdE

It doesn't explain stuff you don't know, so I recomend playing around with your inventory and stuff to get the hang of how it works. Like pressing X over your weapon or how to equipe items in your hot bar ect.

Thanks for the help guys! Now, can I sell things to the regular merchant I've already met or do I have to progress further? Can I seel things at all or do I need to dump the stuff don't want?

And new episode (Episode 4) is up :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNjmGMF0r18&feature

This is in the comments but not sure if you want it here:
Ya progress!!!!! So if your going to stay with the scimitar you want to level dex. Also you can level up, when the members turn red it means you can't level again. With those souls you can only level once, and that's why it turns red.

No you are unable to sell to merchants, you must stuff your things in a box. Also you can dive bomb on the demons head but you took to long.
Title: Re: Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition
Post by: misterjscape on January 26, 2013, 03:55:45 PM
There is one way to sell your stuff, but by the time you reach that point the souls get for selling your stuff will probably so little it is not worth the time... (There are a few items that give you a lot of souls, like coins and boss souls, but boss souls are always used for acquiring cool equipment, and there are only like 4 coins in the game)
I would just drop unwanted items, they will disappear at some point.
Also, new episode!  Watching it right now :)

The game gets easier when you can upgrade, you really don't need the drake sword. My fist play through I used almost the same setup as you, using the schimitar. I havnt watch this new episode but ill comment about it when I do :D
Title: Re: Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition
Post by: misterjscape on January 30, 2013, 12:18:24 PM
That sounds like a decent reason to get the Drake Sword, you know, seeing as videos take a ton of hard drive space.

I'll put it in "watch later"  ;D
(Too addicted to Trigun to watch anything else right now)

Edit.  Watched it, finally.
The enemy with the weird looking heavy weapon that killed you is very tough.  His name is Havel the Rock.  His attacks will one hit you (with your current health and armor, anyway) and he has a lot of health.  Right now, you don't have to fight him, but if you do decide to fight him, he'll drop a veeeeeeeeeerry nice item for you. I'll keep it a surprise :P

The lizard boss that you fought is a Taurus Demon.  You'll need to fight him if you want to progress any further.  There is no way to flee from him once you enter the fog (other than using a homeward bone to return to the last bonfire you visited with all your humanity and souls).  You had the right idea on how to fight him in episode 4 before he jumped up the tower, you need to fight him the same way you started fighting the first boss (jump down and attack his head).

If you still plan on getting the drake sword you'll need a bow and you'll also need to increase your strength stat in order to wield the drake sword (16 strength if I remember right)

Also when people write "need humanity" they usually mean you should summon someone to help you, which requires you to be human, which requires you to restore your humanity at a bonfire with humanity (meaning the number at the top left corner of the screen, not the item). Thought I'd add that just in case you were wondering.

Watched the new episode. Episode 6 and now that you have proven yourself worth ( I see that some new tips are in order) we will get to how your combat is!

When you attack someone you often just spam the attacks with no reason, although this has gotten you this far, enemies get, not harder but complicated, by having to come up with technics to kill each one. So here's my tip:

1. You should attack when the enemy is stagered(this happens usually when you use your schimitar on the undead) or when your enemy is not attacking.
2. Use the shield more. When your enemy is attacking instead of attacking as well and losing health try to shield so they bounce off and lave room for attack.
3. ROLLING!!!! So in the recent boss fight you used a lot of rolling, and although it was good(I was so proud of you!) it wasn't good enough! Rolls have specific frames for invincability(not sure when) and you can use those to roll away in the middle of one of his attcks(you did this a few times during torus demon)

Also don't use humanity for healing, that's really dumb, I don't blame you for not knowing but only use humanity if you really need to!

Last thing: at the dragon bridge when you walk down into the room that leads to where you get the drake sword to the left should be a doorway where you kick down a ladder and the bonfire will be there. Pretty much you make a short cut to the bride from the bonfire your at.

Also forgot to mention this myself, when you equipped the hallow soldier armor, did you notice anything?
The soldier armor is much heavier than your normal armor and only provides a small bonus in defense, the only real bonus to it is the increase in poise.  Poise is an armor stat that decreases the amount that you stagger from enemy attacks, pretty much it makes you look like a bad ass who doesn't flinch to being hit by a hammer.  Because the Hallow Soldier Armor is so heavy it has changed your moving and rolling animation.  With the armor you have a normal roll (which isn't nearly as helpful as a fast roll), with your normal armor you have a fast roll.
I would switch back to your default armor for now, I think you'll enjoy being fast more than being tanky in this game.   ;D

If you want both decent armor and fast roll you should start working on increasing your endurance (and keep increasing vitality too)

Also, if you looked over my last post make sure to look at it again, I gave it a slightly lengthy edit.

Nice job with the boss!  Love your dodging!
...Now, on to my advice :P
The NPC you met after beating the boss, talk to him again.  Most NPC require that you talk to them multiple times before anything happens.
Continue talking with him and you will receive your first multiplayer item (seeing as you didn't buy the orange soapstone from the merchant).

In the bridge where the drake almost burned you to death is a shortcut to the bonfire you are using.  You know the stairs that're in the same room as the bonfire that're broken?  In the bridge is a ladder that you can extend down towards the bonfire.  Also as I said before, you'll need 16 strength if you want to use the drake sword, so get on that :P

Can't wait for more!

Those dodging skills came from much experience with Monster Hunter Tri on the Wii, 'twas a brilliant game.

You forgot to extend the ladder for the shortcut!
To gain a better aim with the bow, hit LB.
Also to get the sword you'll have to shoot his tail multiple times, just wait for him to stand idle again after shooting his tail, then shoot it again :P
the tail'll cut off at some point (You automatically get the item when the tail is cut off).

Lol as soon as you arrive in Lordran you are able to upgrade your stuff, just head down to New Londo and down the stairs. Ricken of Vinheim is the name of the very first blacksmith in the game. Don't go with the scimitar, it has low range, slow attack speed and high stamina cost, aswell as only horizontal attacks. Pick up the Estoc in New Londo or go for a Balder Sidesword, grab the spell "Magic Weapon", you will be able to get it soon and you are all setup for a high dps build. Boasting good range, speed, weight and awesome damage, about 700+ per strike.

But you only ever need to upgrade your weapons, if you have to upgrade at all, since the game isn't that hard.

Also you missed a ring in your last episode, the Blue Tearstone Ring, its guarded by the weakest black knight in the game, just parry him and he will go down very quick.

Lol as soon as you arrive n Lordran you are able to upgrade your stuff, just head down to New Londo .....

It's not New Londo it is just outside the undead church, its easy to find as its just on your way to the undead church.

You are talking about Andre, thats not the first blacksmith. As soon as you arrive in Lordran, go down the steps from Firelink shrine to New Londo, down there is a second Blacksmith.
Title: Re: Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition
Post by: misterjscape on February 07, 2013, 08:04:56 PM
snip
He can upgrade right away if he wants, but he already plans to get the Drake Sword, and Andre isn't too far away if he does end up wanting to upgrade weapons throughout the whole game.

He could do a mage build, he is doing a pve let's play and CMW could work since it does have three uses, but even though magic has its perks, I'd personally prefer if Justin just sticks with a dex build. (or strength)

The ring isn't really necessary, I've yet to find any use for it.
Also I'm pretty sure Justin would have a kinda hard time parrying the black knight, remember he has only just started playing Dark Souls for the first time (I really do want him to get good at parrying though!)
Title: Re: Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition
Post by: Romeo_One on February 07, 2013, 09:00:36 PM
Personally I would go with an Oolacile-PVE-build, it frees alot of SLs and works really well with dex-builds. But the Drake-sword just isn't worth it, practically everything will outshine it. Upgrading it at this point in time is a waste of souls(what like 20 points dmg upgrade for 20 000 souls and a dragonscale?) Its better to go for a primary dmg-attribute and upgrading a weapon to +5 ASAP, FAR more worth it.

Episode 8! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORWuPsyz08I&feature

I don't really want to follow any specific build, it'll probably make it more difficult for me but I'd like to progress my character naturally.
Title: Re: Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition
Post by: Romeo_One on February 09, 2013, 09:14:57 AM
There is no natural progress in the Soul series, you have to have a concept in mind.
Otherwise you will do abyssmal damage, won't be able to wear enough armor to withstand incoming attacks or won't have the Stamina to dodge proper.
Randomly increasing stats won't do in any Souls title.
Title: Re: Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition
Post by: Axiege on February 09, 2013, 10:50:47 AM
I don't mean random, I'll just do what makes sense to me. I know focusing on a couple stats is the best way to go, but what I meant was I do not want to have a build guide open next the game to make sure I don't invest in the wrong stat at the wrong time. That just kills the fun for me.
Title: Re: Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition
Post by: Romeo_One on February 09, 2013, 11:00:25 AM
I see in that case, just let me give you this advice:

Pick one of these stats:

STR
INT
DEX

Don't go for all of them, go for ONE and MAYBE for a second one incase you have a piece of equipment you really need. These are the primary damage stats.
Vitality and Endurance are usefull for any build. As soon as you hit 40 with a stat you can stop increasing the stat, since deminishing returns kick in and you will start wasting SLs and souls.
Title: Re: Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition
Post by: firstattak1 on February 09, 2013, 11:06:05 AM
So when you said "i cant level up" you could all you have to do is press accept. why the number turns red is because you dont have the required souls to level up a secound time. If your planning to use the schimitar, or a schimatar type weapon, then raise dex.

One last thing, this Iron Pig teaches you a good leason about this game, i wont spoil it but maybe you should attampt another aproch, even with you attacking as he walks away when you were attacking him you didnt even get him passed half, so try something else.
Title: Re: Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition
Post by: Axiege on February 09, 2013, 11:50:22 AM
Yeah, I think I want to stick with Dex, since I did stat as a Thief anyway.
Title: Re: Dark Souls Prepare to Die Edition
Post by: Romeo_One on February 09, 2013, 11:55:41 AM
In that case I would really recommend either the Estoc(directly below Firelink Shrine) or the Balder Sidesword(drops from an enemy in your current location, the ones with the raised visor).
They have better range, good scaling, good stamina-to-dmg ratio and better movesets.

Mind me recording some gameplay footage to accompany your plathrough?

Gaaaaah! Firekeeper Souls are for reinforcing your Estus Flask so it heals more HP! Go back to firelink shrine, and go down the stairs behind it, the firekeeper is down there, ans she'll reinforce the Estus Flask to +1 for you!

That familiar would be Knight Solaire. You have to be human to summon him. His summon sign is right by the door to the boss. (They're Phantoms by the way.)
and being human means getting a Humanity (number in the top left circle thing), going to a bonfire and reversing your Hollowing... Just in case you didn't know.

OH! and you have to have completed his dialogue tree back where you first met him on the bridge.

What bridge? I'm assuming I've met him before, but I can't remember where. Is it the 'praise the sun' guy at the balcony near the dragon? Also, should I be getting that Dragon Tail sword?

Yes, He's the 'Praise the Sun!' guy. If you have completed all the dialogues with him and said yes you should be able to summon him by the boss, or other people, in fact, when you're human. Just look for the gold or white glowing markings on the ground.

and no. The Drake Sword isn't that good, and I think you don't have the strength to wield it anyway. Just focus on upgrading your sword. Unless it's already +5 then upgrade your preferred armour to whatever you can afford.

Actually! I just got DkS on PC So, if you turn human and start summoning people look for my Xbox Live name, or whatever it is, I'll edit it in tomorrow.

I should be able to get to where you are in about an hour and a half.

Oh, and what time do you start playing, in Australian Time?

I really don't have a set time I record at, it's usually after 11 PM Eastern Standard Time. But, alas, and also other transitions, I am sick and cannot record right now :(

I am cancelling this LP. I want to continue playing on my own time (this is a very hard game to force yourself to play for a recording when you just don't feel like it) and the series is barely getting any views :( Sorry guys, I'll still definitely need help with getting through this though, and another way you can help me out is by giving me input here http://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=6019.0
