Very nice build indeed. Also a good thing that you're getting a 1920x1080p screen too. The ram is going to be sufficient for now, although, if you'd want to play a bit more hardcore games, i'd suggest you get another 8GB stick. That could help immensely. Also a good thing that you have a GTX 660M. Very nice laptop card indeed.

The HDD is sufficient for now, i guess. I'd rather get a 750GB SSD, but, the HDD is fine too.

Could you recommend a good 8GB RAM I could stick in myself?

Depends on the brand of the laptops RAM stick. If it's a corsair stick, you can't buy an Kingston stick to add to ir, as that won't work. You'll need to buy the precisely same brand RAM stick that the laptop has.

I think its SAMSUNG 8GB 1600 DDR3 SODIMM , but I can't find the thing anywhere! (only two 4gb ones or dodgy ebay)

Hmm. You could always exchange the first RAM stick to a Corsair or Kingston one, but if you're short on funds, i wouldn't really recommend this as it would mean you'd have to buy two RAM sticks.

My Limit is around £900 or $1445, so I could just get two on it anyway, ther is a option for kingston 1600 but the max is 4gb, i would rather get 8gb ones instead of 12gb (max 24gb RAM)

HOLD THE PHONE

The GTX660M suffers the same problems as the desktop 660Ti. It's good for now, but it's got the memory bandwidth problems...

Mh, i'd rather go with the 8GBs too. Also, i think you could get a few corsairs to fit in there, as i said before, if you remove the first one. Though i don't really know whether or not you could afford that, since i'm not sure on the price on RAM sticks right now.

My dad has a pair of 8GB Corsair sticks in his Dell XPS l702x 17" and they run fine (16GB). You CAN get Vengeance versions which have 1,600MHz clocks, but you need to set that in the BIOS.

Admittedly I don't know what you're intending to use the machine for, but for 99% of users 8GB of ram is more than enough.

However, not putting an SSD into such a high spec laptop is criminal.

If your main purposes is playing games you do not need more than 4GB of ram.
Quote
A game can use more than 4GB of RAM in 2 ways:
-64 bit binaries, requiring 64-bit OS (I think FarCry 1 was the 1st 64-bit-available game)
-32 bit binaries spread in multiple processes
So for 99% of games you wont need more than 4Gb and you have already 8Gb. Another 8Gb is just waste of money.

Cheers mate, I was a little worried about the specs needed as I do use video software as well, but I think it will be fine.  ;D

Well look at this way, RAM is something that is easily upgradable, so try it out first, see how applications work and then you can decide if you need more or not. I wouldn't buy it i would try it, first  ;D

Memory bandwidths/memory bus. They're really quite bad. They'll age very fast.

I'm guessing you've never used a machine with an SSD?
Since upgrading to an SSD (~18 months ago) I would *never* build or buy a machine (desktop or otherwise) for my own use without one being included. It makes *that* much difference.

As for size Vs speed; what do you need 750GB of unreliable storage on a laptop for?
My desktop machine has a 100GB SSD, and a 250GB HDD; that's plenty for my working set (active apps & data), everything else is stored remotely on backed up, reliable storage.
A big HDD in a laptop just encourages you to use it as long term storage, which is a disaster waiting to happen.

SSD's AFAIK aren't great for constant rewriting and such - they speed up writes and reads, yes, but over a period of time the 'cells' and such deteriorate to the point of unusability.

Yes, they have a finite life..... in exactly the same way as every other storage device  ::)

My 96GB Kingston SSD has been on for 8 months, 24 days, and has an estimated remaining life of 8 years & 5 months. Lifespan is really not an issue.

For a laptop they're a perfect fit.

- no moving parts, so immune to vibration & shock damage.
- significantly lower power consumption, so longer battery life.
- much faster, so waste less battery powering other components while waiting for disk access.

For a :
i7 3630
8gb ram
geforce gtx660
750gb hdd        =£792

i7 3630
8gb ram
geforce gtx660
1*240gb SSD    =£880 OR with 2*240gb SSD = £1046

Shame you can't pick 'no HDD' and fit your own SSD; the £166 they're charging for a 240GB SSD is pretty steep.

Any reason you're going for a low clocked quad core over a higher clocked dual core?
If this machine is going to be for games, you'd be better off with the i5-3360.
The i5 should give a slightly better battery life too. (i5 = 35W TDP; i7 QM = 45W TDP)

Look for something with a HD7970M - they're as powerful as a desktop HD 7870 AFAIK. That's monstrous.

I like the configuration, but the price seems a bit steep for the cpu, lack of OS license & paltry SSD. (though the +£50 Crucial V4 256GB SSD upgrade is excellent value).

I'd also be hesitant to deal with overclockers; not heard great things about their after sales support.
On the other hand I've had excellent service from novatech; for me they replaced a faulty 8800GTX (1 month out of warranty) with a GTX260 completely free of charge!

Perhaps I'm missing something, but that site seems to be custom desktops only?
The OP is after a laptop.

I've heard fantastic things about them. Guess we'll see later today as my friend gets his MSI Lightning 7970.
