Title: NEW Chapter in the Exerelin Chronicles!

Exerelin Chronicles!

We are playing with the amazing Exerelin Dynamic Sector and Faction War mod! This series is aiming to play Starsector like a rougelike, death will be treated as permanent, and we wil begin anew and regenerate the sector, while also joining a different faction each time. This way each playthrough will act as a spotlight on a different faction mod, while still tying it together with the new mechanics Exerelin adds to the game!

Starsector Season 3

Starsector Season 3 begins today! As you may have already been told/heard/recieved psychic transmission about/otherwise notified, Season 3 will be returning to Vanilla! (Do you have any idea how expensive renting psychic transmitters these days is? Not very.)

Our seemingly impossible objective this time, directs us not toward a formidable force within the game, but against the game itself! I will obtain at least one of every vanilla ship, even against the impossible boarding mechanics! (Hopefully I don't end up able to just buy everything, that would be lame.)

I have begun another series of Starsector videos, entitled Starsector Missions! As you can imagine, we'll be going through all the missions presented in the game, and as we all know some of them aren't quite balanced for current versions and so some will be much more challenging then they're meant to be! Don't worry people, Starsector Season 2 will continue to go up on Mondays and Fridays, with this new series going up Tuesdays and Thursdays!

Here she is people! Starsector Season 2! We've got lots of mods crammed into this one, because I wanted to show off just how awesome the modding community here is!

Our goal this time will be to defeat a certain ridiculous fleet made by a certain ridiculous ValkyriaL, as well as general conquest of the system.

First Youtube video was the beginning of this series. I'm not asking for views, because I know my stuff isn't exactly that good, but I do very much want as much constructive criticism as the community can give (which unfortunately means if you want to contribute you'll have to watch at least a little)

I decided to start with Starfarer because:
1. I love the game
2. It's different than what you see all over Youtube
3. I wanted my first videos to appeal to a smaller group of people than say Minecraft, so I can get more true constructive criticism, and less "you suck go die"

So... many... ships... o.o, actually spent most of my time before actually trying to be involved in the community ogling custom ship sprites in the modding section, some of my absolute favorite are in that mod.

There are a lot of brief youtube video's about Starfarer, showcasing the indie game. I am glad that there's a bunch of dedicated players who are willing to create entire let's plays on the game.  :)

Axiege, dig right into that mod and show the world how much fun the modding community of Starfarer really is!  ;)

That is completely up to you.

It is not possible to integrate the mod into your current let's play. You'd have to start a new one.

Perhaps you can find a way to conclude your current series. Or perhaps you can put it on halt for a little while. You could also just run two let's plays, if you're up for it.

Well the goal of the current one is to defeat one of the Hegemony System Defense Fleets, I don't really know when that will be possible (so tips for that would be welcome), but I've recorded like 34 episodes total and I don't think I'm close.

Also, one of the defense fleets captured a Paragon... and I said I'd take on the strongest one when I get to that point...

I watched a few more eps, I enjoy it. Admittedly, I mostly enjoy your screw ups, its sometimes hilarious (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHHTjxOGOMo&feature=plcp#t=1m43s) :D   And actually quite useful when I'm thinking about what has to be explained in the manual.

Content wise I can only say what I would find interesting, and that is stuff I don't normally see while playing, crazy stuff. How far can you get with only carriers and fighters/bombers? How well can a fleet do that is only using long range missiles and PD? Can you play completely without shields by utilizing speed or armor? Stuff like that, be creative.
That's only me though, would probably just confuse new players .

I've of course used Tempests before, but I never saw the drones behave like that. Also, I don't know why audio keeps getting randomly cut at the beginning or end, and unfortunately there's no way for me to fix that afterward...

Is that the new biggest fleet? Until we have campaign objectives challenging the big protector fleets is really the only end goal I can think of. I could of course play through missions and attempt to beat them all, but I like the freedom of the campaign.

Also, after I run out of my pre-recorded stuffs, what general length of video would you guys want to see?

Well, in the current but un-updated version of Uomoz' Corvus They are prob one of the harder factions to fight fleet vs fleet,

Semi-common spawns of high powered capitals, generally the fleets are centered around a specific capital, think of it as end game fight material :P no replacement for the sheer brutish Hege defence fleet,
But if you want a fight that will prob leave you with a loss if you make a mistake, look no further :D

Though they are toned down a bit in the updated standalone version.

The thing is flash, your ships are really easy to beat, IF you actually fight them yourself  ;D its impossible to auto battle neutrino however. they will always win with minimal casualties and you lose everything. but that's a given, since you are supposed to play the game, not fly around auto battling everything. their systems makes me drool however. tried to make something similar but failed. ;)

Also, I still would like suggestions on how to defeat the Hegemony, and what length of video you guys would want to watch after I run out of the pre-recorded stuff.

This is one way to defeat the Hegemony System Defense Fleet

3-4x condors
20-30x broadsword wings, "after you have condors, max out your 150 FP cap with broadswords"

everything from talons to onslaughts will die within 20-30 seconds of eachother. you will take minimal loses if non, unless you are unlucky and might lose a few wings.

EDIT: you could also farm huge amounts of money. sell all ships you capture in the hegemony station, then buy everything you have sold + the ones already there then instantly auto battle the defense fleet before you have an accident, you will win guarantied. the ships you bought doesn't even need any weapons.

Auto-battling them is obviously not an option, it's going to be recorded as the finale to my series. Also, I don't mind using fighters, but just swarming them and not having to get involved myself would also make boring video...

Try taking them on with a paragon or 2 and nothing else. maybe a wasp wing for getting points early to deploy both paragons. should prove interesting.  ;)

I'm a huge fan of using a double plasma Odyssey + destroyers and fighters to take down the SDF. Getting around the back of an Onslaught and popping it is very satisfying :D

Episode 29 going up now, and 30 will become unlisted! Episode 30 is the first I tried rendering with different settings and the results look good to me. Unfortunately , I was also testing different mic settings while recording, which didn't turn out so well (I think I've already fixed that issue, but it'll be there for the next 4 episodes as well).

i wish i could upload as regularly as you. if i could upload that much i'd probably be past 1k videos by now... i wish you the best of luck for the future and hope the starfarer community treats you well.

oh just a basic tip, this might be a bit harder to accomplish in a 8-9 minute episode but when i set out to record for the day i like to set myself a set of goals for each recording session you might for example set the goal of acquiring a new ship of a specific type in that episode. i find if i don''t set myself goals in a non-linear game i will just get bogged down and the level of quality will very rapidly degrade and if i accomplish my goals quickly i will pause my recording and come up with new goals.

my only tip for fighting the defense fleet is don't get 3 onslaughts lined up on you all at once. bad things will happen to you... obviously. if you can separating the onslaughts seems to be the best way to work em. if you can get each one by itself and park an omen somewhere behind it, its basically done for. i myself have not defeated the system defense fleet and personally don't plan to but i have fought and been annihilated by them. anyway good luck on both YouTube and starfarer.

I'm going to start recording around 20 minute episodes, Faiter noticed every other episode was getting more views, so he was probably right in saying that was hurting my overall view count. I do use Fraps, which was why, I had it split the recordings and 8-9 episodes was almost always just split in 2, so it was just for convenience. I'll be uploading episodes 31 and 32 today, but once I get through my backlog look out for a (hopefully) noticeable  increase in quality!

i know from experience finding time to record around family can be very hard, 20 minutes is a pretty good amount of time. i used to be able to squeeze out a solid 3 hours of recording ( with 1-2 hours of off screen prep) now i'm lucky to get 10 minutes during the weekdays. anyway i can also understand you splitting the episodes because those fraps files can get ridiculous at times. im curious what's your upload speed? and how big is the average size of one of your videos?

After compression, the 8-9 minute episodes are around 40 megabytes. Having trouble figuring out the best rendering/recording settings for the longer episodes to come, so I don't know about those yet.

wow that's tiny, for a matter of reference my 30-40 minute videos vary from 2.50 gigs to 6 gigs the latter take upwards of 20 hours to upload. good luck, i hope your internet is faster than mine.

Properly rendered one of the longer episodes for the first time, looks like they'll be 180-200 megabytes. Episodes 33 and 34 are up, and episode 35 will be my first longer-format video up tomorrow! Yeah I noticed that, no clue where it came from, mic settings didn't change after 35. I have fixed it though, I think. Now the new problem is, fixing it makes my compression time like 3x as long! :D

I haven't been watching many of your videos (since the instant I see one I end up wanting to play the game myself) But I noticed that at the beginning of that video, you captured a hound and instantly sold it. I used to do the same thing, but recently, I have discovered that if you refit them right, they can be a useful addition to your fleet. Set a hound up with a mauler, a vulcan cannon, and auxilery thrusters, and you will find that the hound, while still a bit weak against capital ships, is extremely useful at harassing.

I just generally don't like anything without a shield, even if it mostly doesn't need one. Also, the hound's weapon mounts just feel really limiting to me.

Buffalo Mk2's can also be useful. I use them as budget artillery early on in a campaign. Just slap some LRMs on, give them good armour and perhaps some forward shields. They will stay out of harm's way, and bombard the enemy with long range missiles.

Plus they can carry lots of loot and personnel.

Yeah, they are good early game vanilla when you are fighting small fleets of frigates and fighters, anything bigger than that or mods and they are toast no matter how well balanced the mod is. good for selling tho, easy 10k credits if you capture one.

I did that (you might have seen) but the second I stopped baby-sitting it with orders it charged straight into the enemy! The AI really needs to be taught the Buffalo's aren't good...

I have a recommendation for you:

You should start preparing an opening dialogue, so that you know what your going to say, and wont have these rather horrible pauses between words. and perhaps to an extent you could try to plan what you're going to do in each episode, so that way you can come up with some suitable things to say whilst you fly around, or are doing things.

I kind of do the first one, but I don't want to be repetitive and say the same thing over and over again; there is a general structure to it though. As for the second one, I do give myself intermediate goals like obtaining Auroras, but I have no way to know who I'm going to have to fight and exactly how it's going to go, since fleets show up at random.

Yup, along with Fleet Control and the 2 factions that work with it if that's possible. Until then, it's going to be just 2 SF videos a week (I had the entire series pre-recorded just before the update, so there will be a conclusion) and when I start the next let's play I'll move this one to the weekends I think. I use Fraps to record, and after a quick Google search of free options (which I had done before purchasing Fraps) I'm not confident in any free recording programs, and am uncomfortable recommending them. Of course they're free, so you can go try them out just fine, and all the playability issues are dependent on your computer :P I do use a free editing program called Lightworks though, and it's pretty nice. I was able to figure out what I was doing, and get a workflow going with relative ease and a minimum of tutorials.

Soontm ;D I need to figure out stuffs first, I wouldn't know what the strongest fleet would be and there will likely be a lot of choices if I go that route again. I want to challenge them all of course, but would a gotta catch 'em all LP be boring because the goal isn't all that climactic? (although the hardest ships to obtain will surely be the strongest and in the best fleets)

I don't know how far ahead you have these pre-recorded, or how much of this you already know, but I have a few tips for ya after watching that video.

First of all, if the engagement is small (no choice of attacking, defending, or running away) you can retreat the exact same direction from which you came. Simply tell your ships to retreat at the start of the battle, and after a second or two they will do a U-turn and escape. Also, if you want ALL your ships to retreat, the full retreat button up at the top right is very useful.

As for enemy ships, you want to avoid fighting the shadow order and blackrock ships early on unless you outnumber them. The rest are pretty balanced (the blackrock are mostly balanced, but one or two of their frigates will defeat you unless you have better numbers)

As for the hound that you may or may not have already lost/sold before I even type this, I highly recommend arming it with a mauler, a vulcan cannon if you can find one, auxilery thrusters if you can get the perk, and around 7 vents and 2 capacitors. This will turn it into a very useful support ship that will be able to mostly keep itself out of danger while doing good amounts of damage to enemy ships.

All of this is up to you, of course, just thought it might help.

I've been wary about trying mods with user created ships, but your season 2 vids convinced me to try and I'm having lots of fun. Also, if you're still having trouble and need a cheap frigate, save up some cash and go buy an Omen (they cost 6600 iirc) from the Tri-Tachyon station. That EMP comes in handy if you have other firepower to back it up.

I have no criticisms other than a couple of suggestions.
One: Most of the scrapper ships have no shields, and thus their fleets are good for gaining money. (their volley rockets are also useful)
Two: I still think that the hound you have would be better armed with a mauler instead of a thumper.

That shouldn't be a problem, those contracts should show up regardless of your relationship with them.

Just watch out for the Ascension Force that constantly guards the Scrapyard.

I see you know about Shift-clicking, but I also saw you dragging your small weapons to an empty slot to sell, Have you tried Ctrl-clicking?

It moves whats in your inventory to the sell window with one click, or moves whats in the buy window to your inventory with one click :)

Makes life a lot easier if your selling many different items :)

The scrappers may not have shields, but you should definitely treat their platypus fighter wing as a destroyer; they have a weapon as powerful as the needler at killing shields, and they can spam rockets all day long. This is a deadly combination.

Yeah, it's easy to underestimate them because they're fighters. I noticed you quite literally turned your back on them in both fights, while they were probably the biggest threat. IIRC they're the only 3 Wing fighter in the scrappers, so you can spot them easily in the map.
(Can I circumvent the hatemail by pointing out they're 12 FP?)

Oh, and Foggers are PD. They shoot a huge amount of tiny projectiles at incoming threats at short ranges.
They're kinda lame.

Unfortunately I still don't think I can record. I need better control of these coughing fits. Anytime I get excited the coughing starts up and being easily excited would cause me to interrupt my videos quite often :( I will however not be letting this break last longer than just this next week; if I can I will get back into the schedule for Thursday's Starsector video.

EDIT2: Alright, for the Fleet Control Mod.
The resources you require, and the resources you produce, are sent to the Fleet Storage Station. You've probably been stockpiling Energy at your Storage this whole time. To start producing those Supplies, place the Fuel you have in your Fleet HQ into the Fleet Storage.

The Blueprints allow you to construct fleets with resources, and are not used up. The contracts are a one time use, and the contracted fleets will fly around fighting stuff. If they survive long enough, they will return to your Fleet Storage and drop off their spoils.

The Hydroponic, Mining, and Trader contracts will be consumed when the fleet spawns, however the contract will reappear if they make it back safely to your station. For the trader contracts, this is a great way to sell stuff in your storage, but you need to be wary that they don't die on the way to the friendly station. They are notably harder to use in Uo's Corvus because of how busy the System is, so you may want to sell the products on your own.

(I should probably make a tutorial video, but I need to clean up the mod first >_<)

Yo, Axiege, I've been following your starsector videos for quite a while but I find myself ignoring more and more of your releases.
The thing is, I think that the reason is mainly about the lack clearly defined short-term and long-term objective. It seems like you simply play for the fun of it.
Of course, playing for the sake of playing is all fine and dandy when you do so in your own time but, as any game designer will tell you, games are fun to play, not to watch.
One of the many ways to circumvent this would be to add challenges, clear-cut short-term AND long-term objectives, take more risks and give a worthwhile reason to watch your show.
What I want to see, as a viewer, is you overcoming huge risks, drama, setbacks, problems and the overcoming of those. Something I would not do in my own game because of the risk you would because its flashy!
Right now, when I do pick up on an episode, the only urge it gives me is to go and play the game. Make weird choices (that work), drive around in a carrier, use the omen then switch it around with controlling an onslaught! every episode should be different, I think, for it gives us a reason to watch it. It makes us wonder what's going to happen, it gives us a reason to hope that the episode is gonna be full of exciting stuff happening. Fight losing battles and see just how much of the opposing fleet you can wipe out. Don't be afraid to lose ships and crew, that makes it exciting. Play iron mode, and deal with the losses.
The important part being that the episode must be filled with stuff happening.
Please, don't take this critique in an hostile attack to your style. Please, take it as the plea of a fan that just wants to have a worthwhile youtuber to watch and that wants him improve.

Or as for another season (when the new release is out with more stability) , with more variance, maybe do UC but only 3 episodes per faction, and swap out and start again ( another faction of course)? Because atm it feels like a showcase of more like.. 2-3 mods more than anything (Lotus, shadow order, ISF? lol.)

I guess my mistake has been focusing on the challenge set for myself rather than the entertainment of my viewers. Realizing that was the reason I cancelled my Dark Souls LP, but it was a much more obvious problem there. I think I may have some ideas on some more interesting but still practical ways I could play so let's see if I can fix this problem :D

And Flash, I know I need to interact with more of the factions, that's part of the problem Mordet has pointed out that I'd like to fix... but I don't wanna aggro your Neutrino Combat Lawyers... they'll beat me up, and then sue me! :(

Arhg! How could you put stingers on the vice instead of the unstable photon cannon!? That cannon works so well on the vice! You should either fix it, or go to the IF station, buy a hadron accelerator, and put THAT on the vice. Obviously all up to you, and you've probably already got everything played out and recorded, but I really want to see the vice be epic, it is one of my favorite mod ships.

Try to get some Wayfarer Persephone fighter wings, those things have more armor and hull than some frigates. They can't kill much, but their longevity lends extremely well to a prolonged distraction.

As a guy who rarely watches your let's play (watched a bit of one episode), those Nirvanas could do with some optimization. They have DTCs when you have the ability to mount ITUs. ITU saves on OP a bit, meaning more vents or caps. Their PD is a bit much. 4 LR Flak? Unless your intention is to use weapons of the same faction on your ships, a set of dual flaks should work fine while the other two LR Flaks could be refitted with things like HVD to augment the Ether cannons. My gawd, that Arc Jet Thruster sounds better than it does now, IMO. If you could get a capital in there and captained it, you could probably take on the Armada with what you have. I would suggest an IFed capital as they're powerhouses and come with a flight deck, so can provide frontline fighter support. The Shadow Order, I have no experience with, I can't comment on them. When you do fight the Royal Armada, I suggest retreating smaller ships like the Singularities once the Valkyrians field bigger ships. Starfarer doesn't allow for micro, and those Singularities will suicide on ships like the Yoshuras or the Vaticans. If you can acquire a Neutrino Vice, you have a mount for that Unstable Photon Cannon, or the Vice could be given something like a Mjolnir.

I agree with Flare that Persephone wings make great meat shields.

If you're looking for Greek ship names, the Antediluvian ship names are a pretty good way to go. Many of the names reference Greek mythos.

You could also name your ships after the Nine Divines. Though you do have 10 ships.... Perhaps the Daedric Princes, instead?

I would be, I don't think I have that mod installed, but I should consider installing more mods just for the missions. To keep it simple I will continue using the outdated versions of the mods that are part of the LP though.

The current TuP complete pack adds 12 story driven missions, that don't alter vanilla Starsector in any way.

I.E. it doesn't add any custom weapons. Just ships that are only available in these custom missions.

Nope. I would watch daily starsector if you uploaded it that frequently, but right now you have a good schedule that does makes you cherish each video videowhen it comes out. But if you find it hard to deal with in real life, and recording takes up too much time, don't hesitate to upload less or take a break. You have a life too, ya' know. :D

That isn't the problem yet, and I should have clarified, I did mean considering all of my videos. It may be just that no one is interested in watching them, and that probably is more likely than I am overwhelming potential viewers. This might not be the best place to ask, since you're all here for, and invested in, the Starsector videos. I don't want to scare new viewers away with the sheer magnitude of my release schedule.

Well then, most people are subscribed to large channels that upload videos daily. A regular schedule is always a good thing. If you think you upload to often then consider dropping one of your less watched series. I came into starsector because you made it seem really fun, but I also watch some of your other videos too. And besides, I really have no idea why you don't have more subscribers. You have all of the quality of a large channel, minus the subscribers. :/ Anyways, the important thing behind all of this youtube stuff is to do it as long as you enjoy it.

The way I use gauss cannons is to stay well out of range, kiting them with its huge range. Also, use the sunder to protect you from the faster frigates that come at you when you try to kill the onslaughts. I might make a video too on mission 6

Onslaughts are a lot more dangerous than they used to be. You can't keep your distance from them because of their Burn Drive, and even then their TPCs have a pretty good range on them. I would definitely like to see someone beat this mission, although I haven't looked for a video on it myself yet.

Thanks! ;D I love hearing people say they enjoy my videos! But yeah, some missions haven't been changed in some time, so they can be much harder/easier than intended. Also, season 1 of my Starsector LP (was still called Starfarer) was all vanilla if you wanna check that out. I too wanted to play through vanilla content a bunch before experimenting with mods, though you don't want to deny yourself that treat for too long, the modding community is great.

So the sudden update has sort of thrown a wrench in my plans. I wanted to take a look at Exerelin and do a short series with that to stall for time, and I thought it would be nice anyway to use that to break up Seasons 2 and 3. Now that 0.6a is out, I want to get to recording that as soon as possible, but I'm not quite sure what to do with it.

Season 3, I want to be vanilla, especially if I end up starting it right off the end of Season 2, because then it's going to be the same un-updatability issue as before but even worse, since for now everyone is pretty much just getting their mods working. The nice thing about my plans for Exerelin was that it wouldn't be an issue, I'd be playing on iron mode and when I died I'd update any mods that needed it and start over in a different faction. But again, I want to start recording in 0.6a. I guess I should go through and check on how mods are progressing before assuming they aren't all ready 2 days later, I'm sure you could and may have already done it.

So yeah, there's my dilema. What do you guys think?

Ow that sucks! You know whenever something like that happens, it always seems you got the best footage too. That will actually be fine. The way the series is set up it won't be a problem to reinstall mods and save file incompatabilities won't matter. Until the end of the Gedune 'playthrough' though, it will have to remain in 0.6a.

Also, the displacing method can work in your favor if you teleport behind them. It has a longer range than standard displacers, so it's almost like a Hyperion.

What faction to choose? But you already went with my favorite of the bunch... I'd suggest you play nomads, except with the weapons being mostly built in you might miss out on the variant crafting; I'd suggest neutrino, but with the current ease of gaining lots and lots of money the lp might become a tad bit too easy...

I guess you could always do what I like to do and start off in a pirate's hound.  :P

I am pretty sure I don't want to use Valkyrians or Neutrino right now because we saw so much of them in Season 2. And we fought mostly just SHI as the Gedune so I wouldn't want to play as them right now either. BRDY would be a cool option, there's been a few updates unless I'm making things up, and the only ship I ever showed of their was the Desidnova... although I did use that... a lot.

Hiigaran Descendant ships are really cool, and I think I recieved a suggestion for them on the video.

Beyond that I need to decide which factions are actually going to be in the sector at all. I might go for completely swapping out everything, Vanilla factions being the only constant.

That is also a valid point. I think a good compromise in that case would be to have them in the sector, but not be playing as them.

Yeah, I was not fortunate in this playthrough. I did definitely aquire a cruiser though, a very nice one at that.

So for now, I am able to load the game up, and the save file, but I want to try to take some precautions to keep something like this from happening again.

The balance with the game and your voice is really close. Perhaps you could make your voice cancel out the game volume a bit when you talk? There is an Audacity feature the does that.

Have you thought about doing something similar to what Tokshen did, and cut out some of the less exciting parts from your Exerelin play through? Atm, i feel like the Valkyrian series will end before you even get to capital ships :/

And that is why no Valkyrian Chronicles today. I need to make more time to play some more on my own to actually be able to do things for the final episode.

Hmm, honestly at this point, I'd recommend you broaden the games you play. Starsectors great, but there's only so much content you can produce on it.
