Title: Space Pixels 1000 - "Invasion of the Quirky Aliens"

So what is Space Pixels 1000?
Space Pixels 1000 is a Starfarer mod inspired by Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters. Basically, you control a large starship that can be outfitted extensively. Any starship costs 100 fleet points. As soon as you have gathered enough credits you'll be able to upgrade to a better starship. This will replace your old starship for one with better overall stats and more hangar space. All other ships in the mod only cost credits and hangar points. These ships will rely on your starship to operate. There will be literally hundreds of ships to choose from. The credits you obtain from destroying alien ships represent the resources that you salvage from their wreckage.

The basic premise is that your homeworld has come under attack by fleets of hostile alien races. You are one of only few starship commanders charged with defending the homeworld. There will be different versions of the mod, each allowing you to play a different race in the campaign.


But why such ugly ships?
Nostalgia mostly. Playing The Ur-Quan Masters made me want to do something in an oldschool style. Plus it is easy to churn out massive quantities of these retro ships.

I put projects on hold for a bit when I'm tired of working on them. Then switch to another project temporarily. So, I'm slowly making progress on all projects.

There will be roughly 100 ships per faction. Ships can be bought in different wing compositions. Each ship has three variants. There's interceptors, corvettes, frigates, destroyers, cruisers and battleship that can all launch from the starship. Obviously, battles have the potential of being humongous.

Since its based on upgrading ships, your using the build in weapons that have no OP cost right?

Right. The weapons on the ships don't take up OP. Except for the weapons for the starship.

[edit] yes they will be "build-in".

A few of the larger ships will probably be both flyable and for purchase as "wing". Only controlling the starship might get a little boring.

Oh, and colours. Take the ships above as example. These are blue. There will be variations in colours so you can put together a fleet in your favourite colour.

Nice finds.

I'll introduce many alien races with distinct ship styles. The initial mod will have only 2 or 3 races. But the fun part is, I can keep on expanding the mod. Currently finishing up the Earthlings.

Earthlings are an odd species. I mean, they have two eyes and this weird thing they call a nose. Apparently this "nose" makes them put chemicals on their body to mask their musk. Weirdo's.

Want to contribute? Help me think of some suitable names for weapons. Quirky is what we're looking for. Just have a look at some the species:

The more advanced the starship, the larger it is. There are not but 6 types of starships. Instead the Earthlings follow three different research paths, resulting in 18 different starships.

Rare "Alien" spaceships will pass through space during the campaign, unaffiliated with any of the "normal" species. They are superior in every way. There is a small chance of capturing their vessels, giving you a boost. But also a powerful enemy.

Now that crew numbers is a part of fighter wings, we have another interesting angle to work with in this mod.

The starships require a minimal number of crewmembers. But the ship can also accommodate extra crew, needed to man the ships that launch from the starship. A better starship might have more hangar space and more crewmembers, allowing it to maintaint a larger fleet.

Let's say a starship requires 100 crew to operate and has 200 crew maximum. This allows the starship to maintain a fleet at 100 crew maximum. It all comes down to personal preference in how you set up your defense fleet. Will you use lots of interceptors and corvettes? Or a handful of destroyers and cruisers? Or perhaps a combination of the two...

Choice is a central  spearpoint in this mod.

Once i release the first version of the Star Control im working on (probably tomorrow) be sure to check out anything you need from there, also i left a folder with really low px based ships from the original Star Control 2 or 1.

So I was thinking about your mod at work and drew up some stuff in MSPaint. Turns out I made them too high-res. :-\

Still, might you have any use for these? Do they need to made more chunky? Got any tips on an easy way to do that?

I did some variants, as well. I like the black with no outlines best.

If you want the chunky, work at half the resolution you intend. Then as the last step, resize to target size using the Nearest Neighbor algorithm (no filtering blurriness).

Yeah, tried using Nearest Neighbor, Pixelate filter and so on but they kind of screw up the shape of the ship. If Erick Doe wants them I may just redo them.

I think they look very nice. You've certainly looked at the design of some of the ships.

But they don't fit the overall pixelated style of the mod. However, you could turn them into a mod of their own. The black/ purple ones would make an awesome faction of phasing ships.

On a side note, I've achieved the pixel look by actually using a block of four pixels to represent what normally would be one pixel. I hope that makes sense.  :)
