Post by: BigWyrm67 on December 21, 2022, 09:54:38 PM
Since its been over a year since the last content update, is the game now officially dead?

No.

There's always someone new asking this, and the answer is always no.

Admittedly, the devs seem to use twitter as the primary feed for "Hey look at this new bit that we're working on" rather than the forum, but it is still being worked on.

There'll be an update when there's an update; with no patch notes up yet, it's a safe bet that that'll be sometime next year.

It's always about this long between releases, nothing abnormal.

Take up a serious modding addiction to tide you over.

As Hunter S. Thompson once said:  "once you get locked into a serious mod-collection, the tendency is to push it as far as you can."

By that logic the game had been resurrected like three times by now.

starsector contents on a slow drip feed. The creator recently posted new ship stuff on his twitter, so he's active.

It would of been nice to have something to chew on over the x-mas hols.
Problem with waiting till next year is there's some pretty massive titles next year that will be distracting a lot of PC gamers.

It's been a pretty quiet year so would of been nice to have something, but alas..

You've been here eight years. You should know the score by now.

So that means people can't have an opinion or raise a concern?  ::) Ok then buddy..

I agree that after a FULL YEAR Alex really needs to start wrapping up w/e he is working on and get it out the door already.

Consider it a "soft" deadline rather than a "hard" one. Once you've gone over an entire year, it is time. For real.

If you’re bored between releases, modding is a more constructive response than whining.

(For what it's worth, the "wrapping up" is what I'm currently doing, there's just... a lot :) And then there's playtesting, too!)

Before the batch of twitter teases and QoL fixes, I've responded on the latest blog post thread (2 months ago) that I'm surprised there's so much new stuff being added for supposedly 0.96 version. And the absolute legend of a man responded "Oh, I was afraid there wasn't enough to it yet."

Alex is a phenomenal developer but sometimes he keeps things a bit too long in the oven. Waiting a year and a half to get QoL changes and bug fixes is a chore. I know it's more work in the end to do gradual releases but a year should be the absolute maximum to wait on a new patch. It's hard to get excited for blog posts when I know that means a minimum of 3-4 months of waiting.

It's my birthday tomorrow, I can do a mini rant once on the dev cycle.

Wait, if you're really doing a first surprise release before partial patch notes then forget everything I said.

(It'll be patch notes first. There's still a ways to go even though it's in the "winding down" stage, is what I'm trying to say. The current plan is finish up most things on the TODO (or decide not to do them), then patch notes, then playtest/modding improvements/etc.)

That was typed too confrontally typed, my bad. You can absolutely raise a concern. I'm questioning how someone has been here this long and is asking about the developement cycle now.

You've just repeated the same mistake by stating/asking it a second time.

We are asking because it's been a full year since the last playable release. In the 10+ years that a lot of us have been following the game it's not been that common to go for so long.

Being on a forum for 'x' amount of time doesn't mean we automatically know every detail about how the game is released or what short/medium term release strategy Alex is employing. Life changes and so does priorities and feature lists.

We are simply asking to try and see what's going on, even at a super high level.. Alex has given a slight indication above as to the order he is looking into things. Which is enough for now.

I didn't start this OP, I was simply commenting on it would of been nice for a release over the x-mas hols while people are off work/school. You are the one that decided to turn it into 'well why didn't you know, you've been here for 8 years'

Kind of a mindless statement that doesn't really hold any water (imho)

The release cycle hasn't been the same continuously for 10 years, it's waxed and waned, some years has been busier or more frequent than others. If the dev cycle had been exactly the same with no deviation for 10 years straight, then your statement/question would make sense. Then yes, it would be weird to ask and yes we should know. But it's not, the dev cycle has always been somewhat different, it's just been slower the last year (it seems) than what's normally been the case. Hence the concern/questions, which we are fully entitled to raise or ask.

I am going to be honest, maybe this will come off as a bit too fanatical, but as someone who wants to be a game developer myself eventually, I find questions like this somewhat offensive.

No, this game isn't dead.  Alex still posts updates on his Twitter pretty often, the last blog post on the website was just a few months ago, and even aside from either of those things, he still posts on this forum multiple times a day every day.

Even as far as this game's updates are concerned, a year isn't really that long.  I feel like I'm the only one that realizes that 0.95 released about 22 months after 0.91a; to see anyone complaining about just a year is so odd to me.  Maybe because I didn't actually read the forums before, I didn't see the complaints that people had about that, but still.

I understand a year is a long time to wait, but that's just how this game's development cycles are.  My advice is just forget about it until the next update releases, or follow Alex on Twitter to see what the newest changes are(at least, that he can tell you about without spoiling too much).

Did the solar mirror UI fix for galaxy view made it on the current patch list?
