Supports Unknown Skies (https://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=12041.0) planet types

Short Summary
Adds images to all vanilla planets, a way to change them, and 500+ AI-generated illustrations to choose from for your own colonies.
Change planet and colony descriptions with an in-game interface.

Long Summary
This mod contains around 550 AI-generated illustrations for colonies that have been sorted and edited.
It adds pre-specified images to all vanilla planets and can add fitting images to modded (setting disabled by default!) and newly established colonies.
In random mode, the algorithm tries to pick matching illustrations for each planet depending on planet type, conditions, size, population, faction and some other factors.
You can change and adjust the description of any planets you own, adding or removing text as you like, for better roleplaying and immersion.

The mod is highly customizable, check the settings file.

VRAM-Impact can be high - the mod only loads images in systems you visit, but cannot un-load them, so VRAM use can be up to 250mb depending on your actions.
If you are playing on a system with a weak graphics card (< 2gb VRAM), consider not using this mod.

To install the mod, simply download the .zip file from the link above, unzip it in your Starsector mods directory, and enable it in the launcher.
This can be added to ongoing games - and it will break saves if removed.

Text changing Functionality

You click the change button and write a better description!

Image changing Functionality
You establish a colony, and the mod automatically picks a fitting image!

If you don't like it, just click the change button, pick your tags, preview and choose!

You can apply any image to any planet, no holds barred.
Duplicates are disabled by default for immersion, but can be displayed with a simple click.

Your new image will greet you every time you dock - until you decide to change it again.

FAQ

Can I add images to my planets?
Yup, that's what this mod is for.

Can I change the images on NPC planets?
Yes - either change the setting in Illustrated.Entities/data/config/settings.json, or just enable devmode (remember to turn it off afterwards!).

Does it add images to my existing colonies?
Yes, on game start. If a colony doesn't have an image, just save and reload, if it still doesn't have one, report it here.

It doesn't apply images to modded colonies, why?!?
Mod authors have their own vision of a planet, and my algorithm is not infallible (it tries, but it's probably a gamma core. Don't discriminate.). Feel free to enable the setting to apply random images, but don't be disappointed if the results don't match up.

Can I add my own images?
Sure! It's probably easiest to just replace an existing one, but if you want to make the effort, just add the image in the correct 480x300px, RGB-8, .png format in the mod folder, and add the line in image_data.csv. Add at least one "required" tag so the image shows up, and presto!

The images you picked for vanilla suck!
You can always switch that image by editing image_data.csv, it's easy! I'm also always open to suggestions - just post the planet and the image number here, and I'll give it a look.

How many images did you sort through?
Around 6500.

Those tags are weird.
You are weird.

Did you really spend two months of your free time doing this?
Look, man. You spend your time playing League of Legends, I spend mine sperging over .csv files. We are probably on the same autism level.

Are you okay?
I dream of Midjourney, and the machine mind probably dreams of me. At least I hope it does, since my eyes ran away. Not that they ever existed, except for that time they did. Ask Tim for his shizo meds he forgot to take them again and might sell them to you.

Amazing!
BTW, where did you get the sample for the AI to study? There have lately been a few scandals with AI art, and wanted to make sure everything was a-ok.
Also, is it retroactive, and can I pick them for markets already generated?
Edit: Oops, sorry, missed the expalanation.

Midjourney. Not me, I'm just the prompt monkey~

What scandal are you talking about exactly?
Probably some people not understanding how AI image generation works. There's this persistent rumor that it's just image kitbashing, which is plain wrong - you can read up on it here:

That's exactly what I was afraid of hearing from him. I can't stand hearing this kind of b on social networks anymore:/
People won't even make the effort to educate themselves about this technology.
The real issue might be deepfakes or emulating a professional artist that is still alive and attempting to make money from it.
But that's a completely different situation here.

Anyway, thanks for your work, and sorry for hijacking your thread :)
550 images must have taken you hours and still represents a lot of effort. Great work!

PS: And I even want to add that you are using AI in the best way possible. Visual consistency, thematic cohesion, quality/quantity balance.

Fair enough, but I was mostly talking about stuff like the Deviantart AI art scandal, where the users' art was used unless they explicitly opted out for each piece (and for a while the opt out was broken). Not saying SirHartley would jut datamine the forums for planet art, of course, but was kinda curious about the "inspirations" and wanted to make sure it did not end up with the angry mob TASC did a while back. (Which was harsh, but still understandable.)
I was not worried about the AI art itself (this is an amazing use of it, and I know it is not just a copy paster), but wanted to know where Hartley got the training samples (own mods, friendly modders who volunteered, submissions, or using a preexisting AI art generator).
Even then, I get if that is something that is deemed too intrusive. It was mostly to try calm some irrational concerns and to find other amazing mods, NOT an accusation.

Loving the mod so far! I can finally make it so my terraformed worlds don't keep default portraits  Neither restored mairaath nor ocean ithaca should look like barren deserts, and this mod offers a solution.
I did have a few issues with changing a few images, (namely Boe's Refuge, Hesperus and Kapteyn Starworks), but having it so I could change the look of other factions and transfering it to the indies temporarily solved it.
It also had a few images missing, but that could be from it being added midgame. Once again, EXTREMELY minor.

yup yup looks like a bug. Thank you!

Total around 100€ for a 3-month subscription, mostly used relaxed (when fast ran out lol), ran up close to 200 hours. No V4s, the generation part was done before V3 released and I spent the remainder of the time doing the sorting, cleaning and tags.

oh, what was missing? It should have images for all vanilla planets. If you want to enable in-game changing temporarily, opening the console and typing "devmode" enables the change overlay.

This is one of the best uses of AI art I've seen yet. Giving even a small degree of character to the results of procedural generation is an amazing feat.

I'll definitely use it after I upgrade my PC.

EDIT: I looked over the gallery and noticed that basically every illustration displaying a planet's surface has at least some atmosphere. I understand that many of the subsurface illustrations work just fine for the barren/No Atmosphere worlds we'll take for our cores, but if you ever feel like adding more options, something like the outside of a moon colony would be nice.

I colonised new planets and built a new station, I did get the option to change background for those.

However I noticed that if I only have the "station" filter I don´t see nothing, I need to have "hostile" as well to see any options (and then use other filters into the mix). Is that intended?

How much VRAM does this require? I'm not 100% sure but these are probably preloaded by the game and exist in memory that entire time.

I messed around with my free trial. I got one really good result. It might work for an irradiated world with volcanism. I think it turned out real good. I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get it to generate entirely blue sand. The AI always just insinuated sand, desert, and regolith to be orange-tan and then blended blue into it as part of the skyline.

I hesitate to add this to my modlist because of the VRAM requirement (I do fine on normal RAM, but VRAM has tended to be a struggle for a bit due to my modlist) but good christ that is a feature set I've desperately wanted for a while. Great work as always, Hartley!

Post by: SirHartley on November 22, 2022, 01:12:54 PM
VRAM requirement can actually be mitigated almost entirely.

The mod only loads the pictures you look at. This means that when you enter a system with 4 planets, it'll load these 4 pictures.
If you visit every single vanilla system, that'll be around 100 images, or 45mb VRAM.

When you use the image picker, it also has to load the images it displays. So if you use that one, you'll likely have a high VRAM load (depending on how many different images it had to load), but if you pick your image, then save and restart the game (just reloading the save is not enough!), it'll unload all pictures and you will have a blank slate again.

as such, it's surprisingly light on VRAM even during normal use.

If you want to go full light-mode, set "illent_apply_pre_set_images" to "false" (and keep "illent_apply_images_to_random_colonies" and "illent_overwrite_vanilla_illustrations" false as well!). That way, vanilla colonies don't get images, you can still choose pictures for your own, and you'll probably stay under 5mb vram use if you restart the game after using the image picker.

You'd miss out on the cool new pictures for vanilla planets, though :P

I'd probably be okay with this in future versions of Starsector, if only because it seems like a ton of vanilla planets will be getting new images anyway.

Otherwise, that's super rad! I can definitely put up with a one-time VRAM spike if it means having all these options for extra verisimilitude. You have no idea how badly I want to give colonies their own descriptions

Great work once again, Hartley, and thanks for the explanation!

Expected: Editor buttons present and interactable underneath the colony image.
Observed: Editor buttons are not present.
Notes: mktGoBack not triggering the right rules?

Issue 2: Deleting description does not restore original description for entities with pre-existing custom descriptions.
Steps to reproduce:
Expected: The custom planet's description is restored to its original state.
Observed: The custom planet's description is replaced with the default description. For stations, this results in no tooltip being rendered on mouseover in the campaign layer.
Notes: Suggest storing entity's original description ID in TextDataEntry and having TextHandler reset to that ID instead of always to null. Could also be WAI with some extra UX guardrails or more comprehensive edit history traversal.

Issue 3: Pressing the tab key while editing text puts the UI in a bad-but-recoverable state.
Steps to reproduce:
Expected: Either nothing happens (like the comm directory or sub-dialogs like the bar) or the map opens (like the main dialog or the trade screen).
Observed: The trade screen background is visible (planet zoomed-in on right edge of screen). Main campaign UI (clock, tripad, minimap) visible in foreground. Mousing over where dialog options would be plays sounds and clicking on them plays an interaction sound but nothing happens. Keyboard input is preferentially consumed by the campaign UI (e.g. skills on hotbar can be activated). Spacebar closes all dialogs. Pressing tab again opens the map and exiting the map returns to the description editing panel.
Notes: ??

Issue 4: Mouseover descriptions do not support multiline text.
Steps to reproduce:
Expected: Tooltip shows two lines of text.
Observed: Tooltip only renders the first line of text (e.g. just the "asdf" from above).
Notes: Expect this is a core tooltip limitation.

An absolutely superb mod that finally lets me colonize Penelope's Star to my heart's content without being annoyed by the planet descriptions being off. Well done!

So far I have encountered only a single issue: the image I picked for one of my planets keeps getting reset. Just the one planet though. I think it's because the mod wants to prioritize using one of the pictures for a "mining" tagged world when I'm trying to get it to prioritize the fact that it's a lava world, but I'm not 100% sure what is causing the issue. I have manually set the picture a few times, only for it to swap to something else when I come back later or load my save.

I think I'm doing something wrong. Any changes to my colonies do not persist through saves. I edit the image and the description, check that it works, then save and reload and everything is gone.
I did see a significant increase in memory leak errors after my most recent mod rearrangement, could it be the culprit?

Thank you for the mod.

I've found a bug. Trying to abandon any colony crashes the game. Not sure if this was always the case during my campaign, but I noticed it after conquering a station from another faction and trying to abandon it (I'm using Nexerelin).

Weird mod interaction with TASC. If you build two sets of astropoli around two different planets in the same system, like in Penelope's Star, the first set will become impossible to change the description. Trying to change it around Ithaca changes it around Telephilus, but NOT vice-versa. This makes it impossible to change the descriptions, short of deleting them. Only works for custom descriptions. Any hope of a fix? Not sure which mod causes it.

Absolutely love this mod. It adds so much flair to each planet.

A small thing; a lot of people (me included) use terraforming mods. Is there a way to make it so the pictures and tags on the planets automatically update if the planet type is changed?

A "bug", or rather a weird interaction with TASC is that upgrading the Station seems to reset both the image and the desc. text.

Great mod! Adds a lot of immersion to the game and will surely be one of the mods who will be always loaded every time i start a new game.
My only issue with it is that sometimes planet illustrations change back upon reloading, for example upon terraforming a barren planet and changing the image to a terran, upon exiting the game and loading it changes the image back to a barren planet. Might be because of the tags? those don't update as well.

Yes this is happening to me with my system on penelope's star with calypso and ithaca both of which i have terraformed to be terrans, which when choosing image have the tags of a barren and desert world respectively, so that might be why that happens. I put an image of a terran world, but the system identifies the planet as its previous type so it uses the image i chose before that corresponded to the planet's original type.

Needs an update, it doesnt work anymore. Star Sector is stuck on %100 when this is loaded and works fine when its off.
I use mods that add factions, resources, station construction, space based manufacturing, colony structures, etc so it could also be a conflict.

I found another bug. This mod crashes the game when you abandon a colony, i spent 2 hours testing all my installed mods. Im pretty sure this is the one.

mods installed:
-Nexelerin
-Lazy Lib
-Magic Lib
-console commands
-Illustrated Entities

testing method:
-start a new game as an own faction in Nex
-interact with starting colony
-on Console command, enter "setmarketsize 4"
-in colony management abandon colony

I hope this helps and the bug gets fixed soon, this is a very cool mod.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and bug reports!

This mod was pushed live a tad too early due to my RL taking a super sharp turn towards forced absence from modding, at least for a while. My situation is slowly stabililizing and I'll get around to fixing stuff, but since I haven't had access to a PC with working internet for the last month (and won't for at least another two weeks), it might still take a bit.

Thanks and take care!

I ran into the same issue even with the NPC market option turned to true and devmode on. Seems to be an issue with conquered markets as you have pointed out. So for the heck of it, I changed ownership of market using console commands. Obviously with the market back to NPC control, I could edit the description and image with NPC Market Edit option on. However after reverting ownership back to myself, only the 1st description (description shown when mousing over colony in-flight) and image stayed. For some reason the docking (2nd) description did not show up.

Hopefully this functionality will be updated soon, additionally maybe add a way to change the description when you select manage colony of conquered markets? e.g. one of my markets was conquered from pirates, so there's a description describing the pirate colony in the left text box when you select manage colony [idk if there's a term for this]

This mod is one of those things where at first, I thought that it's cool, but it's not essential... so I didn't include it for the Starsector copy I have on my weak laptop as it's iGPU is beyond crap. I always keep it for my desktop Starsector copy but I thought I'll have to skip it on my laptop since it's too underpowered to run Starsector properly at all much less with this mod.

Well, turns out it IS essential, I can't stand the vanilla colony screen anymore... it's amazing what glorious images can do to improve the game's enjoyment.

Do you know why it might not be working for the Utic star system? Nepheria and Tenas both dont have any image and the Chibog Outpost has a base stock standard picture per vanilla.

OK i found a way to abandon a colony without crashing the game.
You just need to change the colony image to a image of a hot colony.
Then just write something in the description.
 Next, abandon the colony.
I dont know why it works but it may be a problem with the automatic image selection or that the hot colony is not buggy
by the way, love the mod and how it makes the colonies more personal

This is really cool, i also don't think the "rip artists" statement is right, because this mod adds art to places where there wasn't, and doesn't intrude on any human artist. Wherever AI art has been prominent until now, we've seen the price of ai art drop very quickly to near zero, while the price of human art generally endures. This makes it great to fill gaps like this one!

thank you so much! I wanted to use it, but didn't want to overwrite new illustrations. now I can use it and the AI stuff is really neat. it can add a lot in areas where it'd simply be unfeasible for small games/small teams or mods to have added visuals and such.

Hi.
Great fan of your work man, this and all your other mods. Thanks for all the hard work.
Just wanted to say I have the same issue as the other guy and this error has killed my save, as it happens 4 in-game days after loading the save.

Did try redownloading the mod but nothing changed.
Was a bit of a letdown but I had been playing a lot these days so no problem if I can't get the save back. But seeing someone else with the same issue made me think it might be better to report it just in case.

Don't think so. Started this run last weekend so it was July already. Both that time and now I downloaded from the link on the  main page, so unless you changed the download link during the last week, both should be the same.
I never downloaded the one in this page, however.

Also I'm pretty sure my game crashed several times with this error, it just now reached a point where it happens the same in-game day.

Hello,

This crash was caused by TASC, not Illustrated Entities. Please update to the latest version of TASC (it's backwards compatible) and post in the TASC thread if the crash continues to occur after updating. My apologies for the inconvenience!

I love this mod for making player colonies feel more personalized! The only things I wish were different are how the filters work, and how conspicuous the change-image and description buttons are. I sometimes have trouble finding the image I want with the filters, since it's unintuitive to me that, as a made-up example, checking 'hot' might show zero images but checking 'hot' and 'civilized' will show a bunch. I end up going through many random combinations of filters in order to see a variety of choices. The change-image and description buttons work great for me but the fact that they are always visible gives an "unsaved draft" kind of feeling to my colonies if that makes sense, like the colonies are still a WIP. Just some thoughts I had while enjoying the mod, thanks for sharing your work.  ;D

The license of this mod allows you to remix, transform, and build upon the images included. It runs under Same Attribution, which means you may use them in your mod as long as you credit the source and use a similar license for your own work.

Hope it helps!

I think the mod illustrated entities keeps crashing the game. Every time my save reaches the date 29.oct. 214. the game crashes and i get this error message:

Fatal:
illustratedEntities.helper.ImageHandler.setImage(Lcom//fs//starfarer/api/campaign/
sectorEntityToken;LillustratedEntities/memory/ImageDataEntry;)V
Check starsector.log for more info

I've gone back to older saves from an ingame month ago and also to a save 2 ingame months earlier but when i reach this date it always crashes. This is devastating as i had such a good save going and was pretty far on in the story...

Is there any way this can be fixed? or at least can i help out to patch this? I know next to nothing about coding but i can send the log file if it could help.

idk if anyone has ever asked this yet, but I'm using integrated graphics on an I5. I want to download the mod because I love worldbuilding and this scratches that itch. But the VRAM part has me puzzled, my computer says I only have 128mb VRAM but people say integrated cards apparently have more that 128? Is it safe for me to use it?

Use this to check if you can run the mod: https://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=19122.0

128mb is way, way too little.

So it gave me this readout:     Available VRAM: 592.370 MiB
but its also telling me that apparently my game has this much VRAM needed: Enabled Mods w/ Vanilla               3650.658 MiB
idk, have I overbloated my game?

Yes, that means you have installed, way, way too many mods for your machine to handle. With 600mb, you can run a grand total of zero mods that include graphical assets, it's vanilla only. If you do run in excess of your capabilities, your game will start to stutter, and eventually fail to save.

I dont know but i feel like defence missions are to easy by creating infinite money for relatively easy mission right from the start.
Not exactly sure how it should be scaled to avoid steamrolling from the start, in my offtime im messing a bit with the settings to see what i can figure out.

Suggestions:
Luna lib integration for configuration,
switches for each mission type so we can disable one type - this should be easy to do.

I haven't posted any issues yet, but there is a first for everything!

I am running Illustrated.Entities 1.2.a with about 30 other mods on Steamdeck. Yesterday I started experiencing crashes fairly often. After saving, leaving a station, closing menus, transverse jumping, etc.. The error would seem to indicate it is related to Illustrated.Entities.

Using Illustrated.Entities 1.2.a, on Steamdeck using Proton to run the windows executable. I tried to attach the .log file but it appears to not let me attach the full file. Please see the bottom few lines of that log file. I hope this excerpt can help, let me know if I can or should provide other code context.

If anyone has any idea what the issue is I would love to understand what might be going on. Somewhat related, if there is any guide to assessing and diagnosing mod issues, I would love that type of reference material.

Thanks!

Hello !  :)

I am very new to this forum and I registered to communicate a problem I encountered. I hope you can help me it would be great !

I tried to follow those requirement but it seems the mod doesn't see my pictures, I don't understand why because I did put them in 480x300px with RGB-8 and in png format and added the ID in image_data.csv and did added a tag, the pictures are in the "images" file in graphics.

I don't know what or where I did wrong, I don't understand.

How did you do it ? I'm using Adobe Photoshop 2021 to make my pictures acceptable in those requirement, could the problem come from there ?

So i keep getting that error there at the same time every time i load the game. Delta Universiforge is a player station i changed the icon for, Is that what's causing the issue? It may be that it was made as a mining station from TASC. Thanks if you do notice and fix Mr. Sir Hartely, very nice mod.
Edited bc i made a few spelling mistakes.

I agree, they were made with an outdated model (Midjourney V1 or V2 iirc).

The problem is that I made them when my life was less ***, and I was able to spend a good 40 active work hours just sorting images, which is time I don't have anymore if I don't want to starve. I will absolutely take contributions and implement them if offered, but I can't promise immediate updates on the images by myself.

Sorry I don't have better news.

I wasn't able to fit the description I wanted without mashing paragraphs together.

Is there a way to make it work for conquered markets?
The menu does not appear for markets conquered via nexerelin, even with the npc market edit option and devmode.

So... it seems like the only way around this problem is to edit the campaign.xml of the save file, search for the name of the colony, search for $startingfaction id, then changing the faction name to player. The side effect of this is it removed revanchist claims from the original faction though.

Has anyone made a "Customizable star system" akin to our Solar system? I'd appreciated if someone can help me, I once succeeded in doing so half a year ago but I lost the script since my old PC exploded (no not literally) and I haven't been able to recover the files T^T (If possible, include spawning watchtower and artillery stations from Indevo would be better)
