Title: Grant player ability to participate remotely in the defense of their colony
Post by: Timid on June 12, 2022, 12:06:12 AM
Feels like one of the reasons people dislike inspection and expedition fleets overall is that it's mainly left up to RNG to decide whether they lose or not. If they don't like that, then they are pressured to go out of their way of exploration.

Then I see an opportunity for Neural Link skill to be worth taking. Allow the player to establish a neural connection to a ship in a colony's storage and bring up an opportunity for the player to actively participate (without their officers) in defending their colony vs such fleets with their colony defense fleets.

The additional benefit of this would be that the player would see more variety in their battles, since you could participate in trade fleet battles and war fleet battles, without having to actually currently use one yourself. Sort of how not every battle in Total War games has to be your doomstack vs whatever happens to be in front of you.

Making a tier 5 skill into what would immediately feel like mandatory QoL isn't the most grand idea.

It is not just player colonies, but the core worlds too if player does not want to let pirates kill their stability.  It was a real problem in earlier releases when pirates raided too often, and factions would frequently raid your worlds as thanks for your protection.  (At least one of those releases had bugged Pather cells and easily bribed Hegemony.)  Even today, while pirates raid much less often, it is still a good idea to stop them before they wreck stability of various core worlds, especially those with Pather cells trying to wreck their colonies too.

Hull Restoration is kind of like that already in terms of QoL.  Greatly reduces the urge to reload when a ship dies.  At least Hull Restoration has a variant Crew Training effect tacked on for free.

Neural Link still has the commander clone feature, which is mostly offset by the hullmod tax.

The best buff Neural Link can get now is the abolish the hullmod tax; or abolish the skill and make the Neural Link hullmods a quest reward.  Just install them on the ships with no skill required to use.  Then add a new tech skill to replace Neural Link.

I'm still dumbfounded why is it possible to find blueprints for Neural hullmods, it's literally useless. You don't get the skill, useless; you get the skill, still useless since the skill unlocks the hullmods.

I was pretty flummoxed when I found a Neural Link blueprint - wait a minute, don't I need a skill to actually use this? Maybe make it so the skill is what grants the, uhh, other skills to the remotely controlled ship. I think being able to instantly switch between ships at will would still be a pretty cool ability (if the AI cooperated with you, at least)
