I like the random battles already in Starfarer, but I feel like a bit more control over them would be nice.
Being able to select how many fleet points each side gets, and being able to choose which ships are allowed, would be quite nice, I feel.

I feel similarly, Jack. I want to have full player control over those parameters for making a random battle.

Well then, you guys should be happy to know that this is in the plan for the next release :)

Very happy, o captain my captain! ;D

Will we be able to modify the loadout of the ships too? Or will that be handled by modifying some files or not possible at all ???
-
Considering that the ship editing screen will be in, I think it should be possible.

Your... starfarerful trip is done?
The prize has been won?

One of the motivations for having custom battles is being able to test out new ship builds quickly. So I'd say yes.

;D <--- this nicely sums up my feels about this.

I'd like to add a little suggestion to this as well. I'm not sure if this is planned, but I'd like to be able to launch a random battle as a spectator. I really enjoy watching the battles take place as much as I enjoy taking part in them myself. Plus, it would have the added benefit of being able to watch how the AI does with a custom loadout.

That could be useful for running balance tests and the like

oh, ok then, I'll stop butchering the Battlecruiser and wait for the proper ship editor. :)

Very much agreed.
It'd also help with getting more familiar with the ships from the "ground up" - building small battles of only a few ships to get a good handle on them, then introduce some more, trying out different combinations and so on.
