I was under the assumption the distribution of DP was decided by number of ships in your fleet. Yet I just got engaged by a random fleet from a cooperative faction (persian)
both fleets have 30 ships (at least mine) yet I have the bare minimum at 210 dp.
Did I miss something?

It's your DP sum vs theirs, not just number of ships.

That explains it. Thanks for the verification.

In fact, how many ships you have is completely irrelevant to DP distribution, only the ratio of your total DP to enemy total DP. Lower and higher bounds are 40% and 60%, so you will never be outnumbered too harshly.

To clarify what SCC said, what this means is that if you have your battle size set to 500 then even if you're massively outnumbered, you'll still be able to deploy 200DP worth of ships (the enemy will get 300). Likewise, no matter how badly you outnumber your opponent, you can only ever deploy 300DP worth of ships to their 200. Battles involving space stations actually increase this amount a bit but even I'm not 100% clear on the specifics.
