Title: Boost
Post by: Trylobot on June 09, 2011, 11:17:12 AM
Press a key, such as spacebar, that while held provides a bonus to speed as a percentage of base speed (ignoring nav buoy bonuses and zero-flux bonuses) but generates flux while active. Would require new values in ship_data.csv, but with default values it would be disabled entirely (much like Shield type NONE). So certain ships could boost around even while firing weapons, at the cost of generating flux even faster than normal and risking overload.

I like it. This is exactly the kind of thing ship systems are going to let you do - an afterburner boost like you describe, short-range teleportation, cloaking, etc.

Basicaly, you can do all kind of awesome stuff because the flux system will balance it out. Like Shield hardener, next 5 hits will generate no flux/damage on the shield at all, but it cost +x flux if you use it, after this it has x seconds cool down time.

Or a module that  gives +100% range for the currently selected weapon group...all weapons in this group will generate 250% flux while its active. There are millions of possible combinations, this flux stuff is like the best gameplay implention ever (ok, mechwarrior had it first :P)

Will there be a hyperspace drive that lets you warp out of the battlefield as if you would escape through the borders of the map?

Like an emergency FTL thing that has to load up, generating flux and making the ship totally helpless until it lets you warp away instantly...

you got THE DAILY DOUBLE!

the question: Because your ship is so slow, your fleet has left you behind to attack, only to find an onslaught waiting for them. They are getting torn apart while you are forced to simply sit and wait as your ship slowly catches up.

What can you do to mitigate this scenario?

Get the hell outta there, let them die and use their burnt, wrecked hulks to cover your retreat?

Actually I was looking at the plausibility of 100% efficient (damagewise) shields, but they have over 100% upkeep (so they generate flux when active), just as a hull attribute in itself - not sure how well the AI would be able to manage that though.

Like an universal invulnerability field that builds up flux and doesnt allow you to shoot?
