Looks a like scanning mechanic, maybe even tech-mining, to me...

Took me a while to realise it was a gif and not a picture...
Anyway also could be a day-night cycle?

The grid, the arid planet and the red color make me think it's a scan for resources/energy/technology. But the circular shape of the glowing thingie and the persistence of clouds during "scanning" indicate a day/night cycle on a civilized planet.

Looks nice anyway. Can't wait to learn more about the mechanic this is connected to.

That's Chicomoztoc, and the glows are its city lights. You can find the same glows on the current in-game version of the planet.

Huh.  Needs a higher resolution city lights layer for this, then; at this scale, those lights are too blobby.

Yeah, it's definitely some day/night cycle thing. It makes me think those "lights" represent the development of a planet, and are dynamically generated depending on the planet infrastructure, its "Industry".

I would be very pleased if it were mining, loved it in SPAZ despite others finding it boring. Day and night cycle is nice too.

If that's a city, I'd like to shake the hands of the civil engineers.

Would it be possible to alter the colour of the lights according to the faction that controls the planet?  Though with the timescale so high, it might look like a strobe-light.

Pareidolia; we can find faces in anything if we look hard enough. Take for example the old face on Mars ;D

That art looks beautifully detailed though :o excited about possibly seeing more.
