Title: Abyssal Planet Survey Flavor Text Explanation?
Post by: Kilicuary on May 28, 2025, 11:59:44 AM
So I've been farming Threat and Shrouded, the former of which uses the gravity wells as we all know, but I've been surveying the planets that make these wells and you get the additional flavor text that I found a reddit post describing from a year ago. Now, Threat wasn't added until very recently and with the automation they use for their ships and whole military doctrine, does the mining cover up extra match the Threat's capabilities? I would think they would want to stay hidden for now but that presupposes two things, one being that they have the intelligence to be tactical and rebuild while hiding, and the second being that they still think that somehow, someone other than John Starsector would be not only going into the abyss, but surveying planets there. To be quite honest, I am really just trying to figure out more about the planet survey flavor texts and trying to see how they connect. I still don't really know what the gas giant energy spike text could relate to, and I don't know if there are more flavor texts as these are the only two I have found so far when surveying planets in abyssal hyperspace.

There's also a 3rd abyssal celestial body flavour text which is interacting with Black Holes, where the black hole transmit a sequence of prime numbers (or some kind of signal of prime numbers), which is generally considered an impossibility.

As for them still covering up their mining for rogue planets, there's possibly still massive fleets of Onslaught Mk.1s (the Vambrace Armor is a repeatable encounter) roaming around in the Abyss, continuing the ancient war against them. Well, there's not actually proof for this, it's just a theory that I inferred from what's encountered in-game.

If you're talking about a confirmed link between the mined-out rogue planets and the Threat - well, we can't be sure. If you look at the circumstantial evidence, it seems plausible that they are mining out the planets, given the vast amount of salvage they drop on successful engagements.

As for staying hidden, they have good reason to. Recall that the Nameless Rock has evidence of orbital bombardment on the planetoid. This is the same planetoid that the Onslaught Mk. 1 was found orbiting around, making it the prime suspect for such an action. If the Threat are mining planets, then the Onslaught Mk. 1 would have been hunting them through deep space, eliminating them given any opportunity.

Again, there is no concrete evidence to any of the aforementioned events together, and given the spooky, almost supernatural vibe around the abyss, David probably wants it that way, at least for now.

I also have just gotten the "THEY FOLLOW" derelict ship event which could be in reference to either the Threat who's prime motive is to literally hunt down everyone or the Shrouded who, if you use an interdiction pulse or sensor burst while nearby a 'false light', will come TO the player fleet regardless of your interaction with the light or not. I suppose the problem with that theory though is that it doesn't provide reason for the Threat to not have completely salvaged the ship or how the derelict would know of the existence of the Dwellers due to not being in hyperspace, but that provides more questions with how the ship even gets there in the first place due to the transverse jump being rare from what I know about Galactia academy figuring out how to do it meaning John Starsector didn't invent it. I did not know about the black hole prime numbers event I'll have to look at that one for myself next time I see a black hole well. I guess that what was before just random spookiness now seems to have plausible culprits.

If you run out of fuel, you will be dropped in the nearest gravity well. I would assume this also includes "small" gravity wells. No transverse jump needed. If you are being followed and run out of fuel... that could be you. Again, it's anyone's guess as to who "they" are.

P.S. I can't seem to find the Prime number interaction in the vanilla rules. If you are playing with mods, I would try and verify this before we speculate on whatever this is.

i didn't see any black holes in the abyss
