Hello all, first I would like to point out that I am in love with Starfarer and have high hopes for it's future. However as far as I can tell it does not have a wiki with information on all of the ships, weapons, missions, mods, etc that make up the content of this game. I have set up a wiki that can be openly edited by the community here. It is brand new and is currently lacking any content. I will be edited it but any help will be much appreciated. Here is the link.

Hi Ocho, welcome to the forum!
Thank you for taking the initiative and setting this up - I'm really looking forward to seeing it grow.
-
do you think you could set up an IRC channel as well? maybe just a temporary one at first to see how many people are actually going to use it.
-
Thanks for the encouragement Alex. @theShadow, I'll look into it but I'm pretty sure I want to make some amount of progress of this before I start a new project.
-
ok. sorry, thought you were already don with the wiki.
Anyway, setting up an IRC isn't difficult. Here is a guide (http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/changuide.html) which should cover everything. I would do it myself, but it would be better if it was started and maintained by a more active member of the community.
EDIT: actually, if you want to go here (http://webchat.freenode.net/) and join #starfarer, I'm going to hang out there for a bit, if anyone wants to get on and see what the fuss is all about.
EDIT2: actually, it appears Alex will need to be the one that registers the channel, since it links to the nick that registers it. more info (http://blog.freenode.net/2008/04/registering-a-channel-on-freenode/)
but you can still get on the channel to discuss it.
-
Just want to remind everyone that for this to work I will need the help of the community. If you feel you are very knowledgeable about the game and willing to contribute I urge you to do so.
-
:/ a wikia wiki? (I'm referring to the corporation, not the software (which is MediaWiki I think it's called))
I should get my server's fan fixed and provide hosting for a lot of the secondary stuff (and mods too).
-
I can work on editing this. I made a bunch of changes to the main page, but I don't know how to save it, and lost everything. Oh well, I can do it again.
-
Just click publish when you are done, alternatively alt+s

I bought this game a few day after the first release but did not registered on the forum, till now. I liked it from the first minute of play and have played it for days. I think it has great potential. As a programmer i appreciate the effort on AI. I hate when good game are ruined by poor AI.
On topic, i was waiting for a wiki. I'm going to contribute. For now i have done little, i added the list of the ships and now i'll add a list of the weapons.
-
question. If everything on the wiki is considered CC-by-SA, then how much information can we copy from the starfarer website? I was going to copy the whole blog post about lore into a wiki section, but now I'm not sure.

Hmm. Reading it over, looks like you shouldn't do that. Perhaps add a link instead?
I'm looking into setting up MediaWiki on the fractalsoftworks.com server, so this kind of thing wouldn't be an issue (and no ads, too). Would be up already, but it needs php5, and the hosted account is currently running php4, so I'm talking to support.
Since it's the same wiki software, hopefully it wouldn't be too much of a pain to move stuff over when it's up.
-
ah, ok. I'll take it down then.
-
Ok guys, it's up:
http://fractalsoftworks.com/wiki
Still a work-in-progress (need to upload an image for the top right, for one). Let me know if this works alright.
-
Nice, is there a way to improve the searches though? If I recall correctly, the search engine is pretty crappy.
-
So is the wiki I created obsolete now?
-
unfortunately yes. Anything we posted on the wikia wiki would have to habe been compatible with the CC-BY-SA general public use liscense, which most of the starfarer stuff us not. It is owned by fractal softworks, and not public domain.
However, you can manage the new wiki, and I'll help transfer the stuff over later tonight.
-
Alright haha it's all for the best then.
-
So is the wiki I created obsolete now?
Look at it this way - you doing that made me make one :)
The stuff already done (list of ships, etc) ought to be easily transferable to the new wiki, right?
-
As far as I know. If it's all possible could I still have some control over the new wiki?
-
Hm. In other news, the new wiki is kind of slow. Not much I can do about it short of changing hosting/servers. Maybe wikia isn't so bad, after all. Thoughts?
-
I usually prefer wikia when looking for game wikis, there are a good few more ads, but they're not very intrusive.
-
It doesn't seem any slower to me. I'd prefer one based on the dev's server:
- No ads
- No superfluous Wikia menus or meta ads
- No reliance on a third party (anyone remember Geocities?)
- No licencing problems
- No ads
If a different server is required later on, the database can always be exported (as opposed to a painstaking copy/paste migration).
-
Ok, so I've been familiarising myself with the wiki, and have added some content in the process; it's all within the Weapons category to avoid any unnecessary duplication of effort:
http://fractalsoftworks.com/wiki/index.php?title=Category:Weapons (http://fractalsoftworks.com/wiki/index.php?title=Category:Weapons)
I haven't really edited wikis before, so I'd like to get some feedback before venturing any further. Are there any hardcore wiki nerds in here that can take a look at what I've done and see if I'm on the right track, particularly with regard to category hierarchy and other conventions?
And of course, I'd better wait and see which platform we're going with before going all-out...
By the way Alex, I don't think your webhost is on the ball; PHP 5 came out seven years ago.
-
Looks like a good start to me!
Hmm. You know, I'd love to see some meta-information in there - strategy and tactics, that type of thing. When I'm looking at a wiki for a game, those tend to be really interesting.
For things like weapon data, someone looking it up on a wiki is likely interested in comparisons - so it might make sense to arrange it in a table, or something of the sort. Here's (http://mountandblade.wikia.com/wiki/One-handed_Weapons) how they did it in the M&B wiki...

In their defense, it just defaults to 4, and there was an easy way to switch it to 5 (that I missed).
It doesn't seem any slower to me. I'd prefer one based on the dev's server:
Wikia seems to load in under a second or so for me, the fractalsoftworks/wiki one takes 3-5. The other arguments against it are all good, though. It's just that the hosting situation isn't likely to improve in the immediate future. It almost certainly will at some point, though.

I agree, and this would be a good next step (Or perhaps it would have been better to do first? Again, I'm new at this).
One of the main strengths of wikis is the way in which they allow you to browse through subjects at your leisure; with this in mind, I want to lay the groundwork, so there's some sort of structure to build up from (It might also tell you something about me that when coding, I'm kind of OCD about things like indentation – convention must be followed, lest the world come crashing down. The problem here, of course, is that I'm making it up as I go along).

Everything is slow for me, so a second or two doesn't make much difference. :P But yeah Wikia is a little bit faster, not counting the ads which keep loading after the content is downloaded.
It's just that the hosting situation isn't likely to improve in the immediate future. It almost certainly will at some point, though.
That's good enough for me, and there's no hurry. The game's still in alpha, after all. ;)
-
Ok, I've fleshed it out a little (http://fractalsoftworks.com/wiki/index.php?title=Weapons).
-
Whoa, very nice!
I love that the columns in the table are sortable too, so useful.
-
Btw, the wiki could use a graphic for the upper left corner.

Oh, right.
An Apogee-class exploration cruiser has been commissioned by the Hegemony to perform logo duty until further notice.
-
Largely off-topic, but there is a server renting company in Surrey (eSecureData) that has plans for $80 a month. Siteground (which I use) is a webhosting company and it costs only about $12 last time I checked.

Quick question regarding weapon fire rates: is burst delay applied after every shot in a burst, or is the last shot excluded and it goes straight to chargedown?
For example, say I fire a burst with a Light MG:
chargeup (0 seconds)
fire shot 1
shot 1 burst delay (0.1s)
fire shot 2
shot 2 burst delay (0.1s)
fire shot 3
shot 3 burst delay (0.1s) <- this
chargedown (0.2s)
Is the total time 0.4 or 0.5 seconds? I assume it's the latter, but I'd like to be sure since it's going in the wiki.
-
0.4 - goes straight to chargedown.
-
Thanks. My trivial question answered in only six minutes – you really do indulge us.
-
Just so happened that you posted right before I checked the forum :) Good timing.
-
I invite anyone who edits the wiki to add your names to the "credits page" I just added. I also added a lore page, copied from the "state of affairs" blog post.
-
I just wanted to say that our wiki is looking good. Great work, contributors, and thank you.
-
*bump*
Wiki seems down for some days now, at least when i try to access it (could be my luck).
Here is the error:

It's been mothballed for now.
