Title: [0.98a] SpeedUp 1.2.2
Post by: Dark.Revenant on April 24, 2018, 10:48:53 PM
Download SpeedUp 1.2.2 (https://bitbucket.org/DarkRevenant/speedup/downloads/SpeedUp_1.2.2.7z)

Ever wish the game would go by quicker while you're flying your lumbering Paragon up to the line of battle?  Ever wanted to push "fast forward" while your fleet mopped up the remnants of an enemy fleet?  Ever wanted to speed through a trivial Derelicts fight?  This mod is for you!

Hold the middle mouse button and the game becomes 2x faster.  You can also press the caps lock key to toggle fast mode at your leisure.  The B button toggles the slow-down effect of phase systems.

The following are NOT RECOMMENDED for pitched battles due to causing problems with AI and hit detection: F3 applies a 6x multiplier, and control-capslock causes the game to run in as-fast-as-possible mode.

Controls are fully customizable by editing SpeedUp/data/config/SPEED_UP.json.  You can even set custom time scaling factors on separate inputs, if you like.

Thank you so much. There are so many battles where the enemy is ever so slowly retreating/getting mopped up and I am so far from the action that I have no way to end combat so this will make the game so much more enjoyable to me.

Nice.
If only you could make similar for global speed.

With a thank you, I'd like to point out that there is no effect if player is not present on battlefield.
Can't say if it applies to retreat, though.

This is the part where, Although you created another of the GREAT utility mods, like Combat radar or Autosave, I still have to make requests/Ask questions

Does this override the game setting's combat speed modifier? If it make the game default to +50% speed, does this make it so that nothing happens when you activate it, and drop down to the original 100% speed, or does it stack?
Can you change the bonus, to 200%?
Does this cause frame skipping when used? High speed projectiles phasing through shields?

Irregardless, a new mod that is a MUST have.
Title: Re: [0.8.1a] SpeedUp 0.5.0
Post by: Dark.Revenant on June 12, 2018, 02:44:01 PM
It's multiplicative with the game's existing combat speed multiplier.

You can change the bonuses to anything you want and mix/match key settings.  I'll release an update with some bug fixes within a week or so, relating to some more complicated key binding schemes.

Yes, it can cause frame skipping.  I would strongly recommend increasing the FPS cap if you're going to push this mod over the default setting of 2x speed.  There will be artifacts and glitches if you make the multiplier too high.

Where is the FPS cap? Haven't seen that. would have been useful to know about. (Although I suspect increasing it might melt my computer)

Can we get a link for the 0.8.1 version pretty please? Or will the new version work there as well.

[EDIT] Nevermind, you can get to the repo by opening the download in a new tab and shortening to the downloads folder. Sorry.

When starting starsector, there is the mods list. There is a brief discription of each mod. Maybe you want to mention the default controls in there. So that people who try this mod for the first time, have it easier to find the controls.
As I am the worst possible user sometimes, I could not find theese keys for some days. ;-)

Nope. Shift is the only way to speed up.

Thanks for the great mod. Could it be expanded to apply to out of battle also as a toggleable option maybe? I'd love to be able to use this when in hyperspace.

Could you give some examples? The default .ini file isn't enough for me to intuit the pattern.

As for me I'm trying to use SpeedUp to slow down the game, given I have some kinesthetic issues. But here is the oddity, if I change the speed mult to 0.5, it seems to work. But if I change it to something much lower, then it don't slow down further, as if the minimum possible speed is around half the standard game speed. Perhaps the game is hard coded that way?

So if somebody can help the proprioception impaired that I'm :)

That's... odd.  I'd guess it's an engine limitation?  In any case, you might be able to get it to slow down further if you uncap your framerate in settings.json: "vsync":false, and "fps":300 should do the trick.

Step 1) Put the unzipped folder "SpeedUp" in the Starsector/mods folder.
Step 2) In the game launcher, clicked on mods on the bottom and made sure there was a blue square next to the SpeedUp mod.

Just to be certain you've done both of those correct? And you're trying to use it only in combat? SpeedUp only works in combat.

It is a 7-zip file, not a plain zip file.  Winzip will not extract it.

I can do toggle via capslock. But its behavior is strange if you're viewing a camera (F). But you can hear the SFX with a message on the top left so it should be easy to know if you did it right.

Preserving the fidelity of the simulation:

People say that the minimum is 30 FPS, otherwise the simulation will be degraded. However, shouldn't that be 30 FPS of normalized game-time? In other words, if running the game at 4x speed, shouldn't the minimum FPS be 120?
Title: Re: [0.9.1a] SpeedUp 0.6.0
Post by: Dark.Revenant on July 11, 2020, 12:13:13 AM
That's correct.  The game needs to be running at a raw 120 FPS to have a 1/30 simulation step at 4x time scaling.

I wonder if the total number of concurrent sounds, when using a high speed up multiplier, results in a significant performance impact. I tried searching for how to adjust the maximum sound channels in starsector (including in the config files), and I found nothing. Do you think that this is a possible area where performance is being lost, and do you have any ideas how one might potentially adjust it? No worries if this is out of your wheelhouse.

Quite a useful mod Rev, I wasn't aware you were so active in this community! It cuts down the wait considerably when mopping up at the end of a battle, and also is quite useful when actually waiting for your ships to meet at the opening of an engagement.

Keep up the good work. I vaguely remember this game being recommended to me years ago, and yet I only picked it up very recently. Glad to see you have been active with modding since back years ago, and hope everything is going well.

Is there any way to make the time speedup be always on at battle start? Having to hit caps lock every battle is a very slight bit annoying.

Less annoying than not having the mod available, though! Playing in 3x speed is so much less mentally draining!

To make the mod work for any version (because I expect it to change quite frequently for the next few weeks), just open the "mod_info.json" and change the line "gameVersion"
It should be "0.95a-RC9" at the moment I'm writing this, but now you can fix this yourself  :)

Actually just took a look at this mod and although I'm not sure I'll use it or not, I did notice you now have an option to enable automatically at the start of combat. I don't know if you and LazyWizard have had any conversations, but the ability to have some stuff turn on automatically at combat start would make using some of the combat commands from his console mod so much easier (and would also make sure that you don't accidentally forget to turn them on for each fight). Just a thought. Take it easy.

Yes I too want to confirm that. To be more specific, speedup happens with the shift key like usual but the ctrl, caps and middle mouse don't trigger anything. Lastly when in combat, not seems to trigger the speedup. Anything I can do?

Is it certain that this mod doesn't affect combat results any way?
I have a strong feeling that i am fighting a lot more efficient on speedup, like i had more flux dissipation. I could be fooling myself though.

I think its the opposite, I hear it mentioned somewhere here in forum or maybe Discord that using SpeedUp actually makes your shot less accurate. Dunno if this was a bug that was fixed or not.

Edit: Ok, so "toggleMouse":3 lets me use the other side button on my Logitech mouse. I would have expected that to be middle click, but since I don't want to use that for anything anyhow, no problem.

Awesome mod, everything works as advertised.

Is there some way to use mouse button 5?

"toggleMouse":4 works, but "toggleMouse":5 does not.

i feel like (sometimes) the game should be at 3/4 speed and i thought you might be the person to ask

is the speed slower (like half) when turning off the speed increase? it feels like it. i think i would even like to have like speed 1.5 or 2.0 when turning of the speed increase. would be nice with a setting for this :3

Have you tried using this mod but editing the multiplier in the SpeedUp.ini from 2.0 to 0.75?
I haven't tested this, but I would try that first.

Yes. Yes it should. As fun as Starsector combat is, it can also sometimes be tedious. I never though about this before but Starsector actually reminds of the Total War series, which has some nice speed controls. There are a few levels of speed up which is nice for dealing with those battles you know you will win but don't want to rely on auto resolve to deal with, or chasing down enemy units after the battle is won. There's also a slowmo function (which I know this mod has) which is very cinematic and something I'd also like to see put into vanilla.

On a side note I also found this great image of the LWJGL key codes, much more helpful than what's currently linked in the INI, maybe DR could put it in next time he does an update https://i.imgur.com/36vtvkK.png (https://i.imgur.com/36vtvkK.png)

If you have a speedup toggle button (default is Caps Lock IIRC) you can speed up on the tactical map and then F to view the ai ship without being kicked back to tactical.

Your crash is from the flushpipe torpedo found in the Kingdom of Terra mod not being updated. I had the same issue and tracked it down to there.

So really odd thing that I'm unsure on how to fix, mod will work in the main menu. But when I launch into a save it refuses to work.

I've tried
Redownloading the Mod
Starting up a new save

Haven't touched anything in ini for the mod and its the only mod I'm currently running, haven't installed any others at all.

If I could get some help I'd be most thankful.

This is very awesome for combat, not just for regular battles but also for simulation testing.
Is there a way to add/change the speeding up during the campaign to be a toggle setting as well?
I looked in the ini for both Starsector and this mod, but didn't find it/didn't know what I was looking for exactly.

There is. In game's settings (esc -> settings), second tab - you can make campaign speed up to behave as a toggle.

Do you mean the file extension is in the ".7z" format? If so, that is correct, but has nothing to do with Internet Explorer. 7-zip is a newer (though it's been around for many years), better compression format than .zip. It is also free. You can download a Windows program to handle .7z files at:

https://www.7-zip.org/

(That program also handles the older .zip format, by the way.)

Cheers!

Having a bit of a problem, even if it's just me misunderstanding something.

I seem to be locked in at 2x speed, as hitting Caps informs me I just pushed it up to 4x speed. F1 goes up to 12x speed.

Am I locked into a faster game state somehow normally or am I messing something up?

The default behavior of the shift key is to speed up to 2x.  This mod lets you go even higher (e.g. 4x or 12x).

Version 1.0.0, everything works except the 1-100x for combat. It's slower than the normal 2x, and honestly I don't know enough to troubleshoot. No one else seemed to discuss the issue, so it might just be me.
FYI, I did some basic stuff to prepare for mods like increasing ram already. Currently installed mods aren't fancy, just nexerelin with some factions and ship.

What's your frame rate running at in combat with 1-100x enabled in combat? If it's below 60, it will run slower than 2x because, by default, it won't let you go faster than 1x speed per 30 FPS, which is the minimum stable amount for the engine.

edit: I fixed it in the setting notepad, but still can't get anything beyond 60. Any insight would really help.

Arguably one of the worst mod changes I've seen. Nobody asked to remove the default binding for 6x, and removing it is literally just an extra inconvenience on most people who now have to find out how to add it back (because there's no tutorial on how to do it and it doesnt work with the mod loader/manager).

Totally agree, this update feels like a slap in the face.
To add the 6 times speed back in I added this after the default Campaign speed up option:
,
        {
            "activateKey":-1,      # Default: None
            "activateMouse":-1,    # Default: None
            "activateCtrl":false,  # Default: Control key not required
            "activateAlt":false,   # Default: Alt key not required
            "activateShift":false, # Default: Shift key not required

            # What buttons to press to toggle run-as-fast-as-possible mode
            "toggleKey":58,        # Default: Caps Lock
            "toggleMouse":-1,      # Default: None
            "toggleCtrl":true,     # Default: Control key required

            "printMessage":true,   # Default: Show message
            "onAtStart":false,     # Default: Disabled when first entering campaign
        }
The file you are looking to edit is SPEED_UP.ini in the mod directory.
Buttons to press after adding this will be the same as in combat: Control-capslock

There was a mod incompatibility that was caused by the keybind for it, and there wasn't really a good alternative keybind to use for it that wasn't also an incompatibility risk.  This sort of thing is why I programmed a robust keybinding system for customization purposes...  It's not like you need to update the mod more than like once a year.

In the speed_up.ini the key to toggle is caps lock but caps lock only changes the speed from 2.0 to 4.0 without speeding anything up. How do I speed up on the campaign map? What line in the ini do I change?

edit- holding down the middle mouse does nothing either, this is all on default ini settings, mod freshly installed
edit2- pressing shift toggles speed up, the ini makes no sense to me

You might be better off downloading the older version before it was updated to 0.97a, then just changing the version in the mod_info file.

Hey, sorry to cause problems, I did search first - How do I change the mouse key from pressing the wheel in to one of the side keys? I tried changing

 "activateMouse":2,     # Default: Middle Click

To

 "activateMouse":5,     # Default: Middle Click

But neither of the side mouse buttons do anything, nor does the middle mouse button. Other games detect this mouse button as "MOUSE5".

I tried changing the activateKey to shift and all that did is crash starsector when I used it...

Thanks

Thanks again for this indispensable mod.

GraphicsLib doesn't appear to have the capability of turning down the brightness of weapon explosions. Much of these effects are apparently handled by vanilla. Running the game without graphicslib, the very bright, long-lasting weapon explosion effects are still there.

(https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/512356777451323393/1232871643802763345/screenshot071.png?ex=662b08b1&is=6629b731&hm=ac9e5ee0dee203cee7104fa2bfb3685118ab506535b8a2189ef656ec1fb94e0d&)

Is there some way to decrease the size, brightness, or duration of the vanilla weapon explosion effects? I've searched through settings.json and the game's graphics folder to no avail.

Alex responded to my thread over here: https://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=29816.msg437699#msg437699

Toggling the SpeedUp mod did reduce the bright explosions linger time. Is there anything you might suggest? BTW, I realize I may be the only person to ever ask this, so no pressure  :D

I've been using speedup for quite some time now and was very happy with it. I used LCONTROL as activate key for 2x in campaign and both LCCONTROL and LSHIFT as activate keys in fights. That way, if I pressed just LSHIFT, I would get 2x speedup, and when I pressed both LSHIFT and LCONTROL at the same time, I would get 4x speedup. It was very nice because it worked the same way both in campaign and in fights.

Now, however, after upgrading to 0.97 (and Miko's), (dis)engaging speedup in fights crashes the game. Histdine pointed out that it may be my button mapping, so I used the default button mapping, which worked. However, I hate that its entirely different in campaign and fights, so I tried to at least switch the the toggle (capslock) and activate key (middle mouse button) for fights, which ALSO led to the game crashing! I seriously dont understand what I am doing wrong.Help?

can we make the mouse wheel button work in campaign map? I tried to change the part here by changing the activateMouse on both brackets but the first one only changes how to toggle the 6x speed and the second one doesn't work.

The config file is a little confusing at first, but it's just a list of keybinds with modifiers associated with them.

toggleKey is the key you press to toggle the effect. toggleShift is a modifier for toggleKey, meaning you have to hold down Shift while pressing the key you set in toggleKey. The same applies to toggleAlt and toggleCtrl. If you want to press Shift to toggle the effect, you would set toggleKey to either 42 (left Shift) or 54 (right Shift).

Ah, I didn't think about the Java version. I'll recompile and upload the new version later today. I'd highly recommend running Starsector with Java 23 (https://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=29320) though, I've seen pretty significant performance improvements with my mod list. The TriOS mod manager (https://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=29674.0) is pretty nice from what I've used and makes upgrading the Starsector Java version super easy.

Hey @LegionnaireLenny
I'm enjoying your SpeedUp mod and have an idea for a UX improvement.
Aside: I mentioned you in the starsector discord, I'm @dismiss42. This post ended up being much better formatted, however if you wanted to have a discussion about these ideas before bothering to implement anything it would make sense to do so on there, perhaps?

I'm often in a sort of DDR keyboard game double tapping shift, spacebar, capslock .. trying to get the intended timescale. Does not help (not your mods fault) there is no feedback at all when pressing shift, if the game is paused. Actually .. If you could get the game to do the same hud text message and radio click sound when pressing shift that you hooked up for capslock, that would be great.

So anyhow here are two alternate control layouts for you to consider, avoiding the double-toggle paradox ;D

"Engage"
Each key is for setting a specific timescale.
Example: F1, F2, F3 for 1x, 2x, 3x (shift is unused).

"Throttle Up/Down"
Example: +/- to adjust throttle from 1x,2x,3x,4x (shift is unused).

One good thing about avoiding the shift key is that it is by default used already in combat and having different controls for timescale while in combat vs out is endlessly confusing. Final thought: since the game offers no ui feedback as to the current timescale, and I for one will not remember, I'd recommend treating the pause key as also "reset to 1x", however I'd need to test that out to be certain it would work.

Glad you're enjoying the mod. Just want to point out this is Dark.Revenant's mod and I'm a recent contributor. Could you clarify which Discord server you're on? I haven't seen your post.

The mod's hotkeys are fully configurable. You don't need to use Shift for anything in the mod, and the default options don't use Shift.

Those are both features I wanted to add, along with support for LunaLib to configure the hotkeys in-game, I just haven't gotten around to adding them.

The "Engage" functionality would make this redundant. It would be nice to have a timescale indicator, but I don't know how to add such at the moment.

Not able to provide video footage at the moment as I'm at work for another nine hours, but it looks like the in-combat speed-up function erroneously increases ammo regeneration rate on weapons like the Storm Needler. During some sim testing this morning I noticed that I could fire a Storm Needler with s-mod Expanded Magazines infinitely while running at 2x speed; it regenerates ammo in increments of 30 and would simply regenerate ammo up to the cap before it could fire 30 rounds, whereas it would use ammo slightly faster than it would renegerate at normal speed. Didn't have time to get any footage before I had to go for work, nor did I have time to test other configurations (faster speeds, different weapons, removing Expanded Magazines, disabling other mods, etc.), but once I'm off I can try to get OBS working to get some footage of this.

I was very interested in this mod because the bullet time effect on phase ships really killed my love of them for me. But am I doing something wrong with this mod?

If I press B while I'm not phased, seemingly nothing happens.

If I press B while I am phased, the mod works as intended...until I am no longer phased, the game is now double speed.

Its really early in the morning for me and I haven't had my coffee yet so please forgive me if I am just looking over something obvious.

Can confirm that phases ship bullet time effect is not disabled when pressing B. Which is weird because in my last playthrough, I do not have this issues.

One odd thing I remember, I think, is the message that pops up when pressing B. Last I remember before my current playthrough, the message is something about bullet time being disabled, while my current playthrough its something about bullet time effect being 100%.

The Speedup function still work as normal, just the bullet-time isn't working properly. Sometimes though, even without the 2x speedup, pressing B while in a phase ship would cause the game to speedup even more than the 2x.

Below is my mod list, I don't believe any of these would do affect this mod functionality, by listing it anyway just in case.

Toggling bullet time effects when you're not phased should not effect your speed. You should see the message that the effect was changed and your speed should change based on the intensity set in the config the next time you phase.

How are you exiting phase? Is your flux maxing out and disabling automatically or are you disabling it yourself? Are you able to disable the double speed afterward?

I changed how the bullet time option works in v1.1.0. I changed it from a toggle to a percentage reduction of the slowdown effect, and the message changed to reflect that. For example, "Bullet-time intensity reduced by 100%" (setting 1.0 in the config) means the bullet time effect is disabled, so everything should be moving pretty quickly.

I believe the old version of bullet-time disabling worked better, imo
more consistent, and didn't cause normal-time to double in speed too

Hi,
quick question for everyone:

Is there somewhere a view of the default keyboard with the key values that I could use for the different settings ?

For exemple, I can infer from the 'F3' and 'F4' being 61 and 62 that 'F2' would be 60.
But what if I want x1 (current F4) as 'Numpad0', and the others as 'NumPad1' x2, 'NumPad2' x4, 'NumPad3' x6 ?

Where can I find those key numbers ?
I am asking because I know from experience that different game engines can get different values from keyboard interrupts.

Thank you.

Hello,
    In the case of 2 battles, pressing the "X" key to switch flagships in map mode will cause the game to crash.

Having an odd problem; the mod seems to work on the title screen; middle mouse button speed things up, F3 goes into turbo mode, both of which make the start screen with passing planets and ships speed up.

But in game neither seem to do anything.

And to echo Gnii from before; how do we edit these hotkeys? I was playing around with other mods and found one of them(not sure which one) made F3 pull up a menu of some kind. That's not a problem for you or this mod but that's how I first started looking into the hotkeys, I was thinking about moving F3 Speed up to something else.

I just started a new game and am using it without issue. I had to change the game version in the "mod_info" JSON file to 0.98a-RC5 to activate it. Definitely can't go back to base game speed after using this haha.

Thanks for the reply. I think I need to investigate this further. It works when I press the caps key, but no other bound button works.

Edit: I got it working by updating my speed_up.json file. I probably did this originally and forgot. I use Shift or Shift + middle click to speed up the game.

The mod mostly works, but disabling bullet time effects when phased is broken.  It speeds up phase time.... and stays sped up when you come out, making the game run way too fast.  Anyone figure out a way to fix this?

EDIT:  Hitting B while not phased gives the message about disabling bullet time... but doesn't actually do anything.  Hitting B while phased disables bullet time... and then speeds the game up ridiculously once you come out of phase.

I've been digging in the settings but can't seem to find a way to make this work.  May have to just wait for an update.

Just need to give DR some time. Unless .98 really changed some backend bits I can't imagine it taking to long.

Or enjoy the insane speed.

One way is to edit mods/SpeedUp/data/config/SPEED_UP.json.  Search the file for "# Press F3 to toggle 6x speed", then look several lines down for this:
Quote
            "speedUpMult":6.0,     # Default: 6.0
And pick the number you like.

 "activateMouse":2,     # Default: Middle Click

To

 "activateMouse":5,     # Default: Middle Click

Having the same issue. It only seems to care whether the number is 2 or not; if it's not, middle mouse doesn't work but neither do any of the other buttons.

unfortunatly the newest speedup constantly crashes my game right after when loading is done, It says JSONObject["version file"] not found.

I nailed down the cause with only these libs enabled:

Code

  "MagicLib",
  "speedUp",
  "shaderLib"

the log is attached, it's been cleaned up of logs of previous launches.

Love this mod.

In the new 1.2.1 regular speed up works just fine.
Is there a trick to get the "run-as-fast-as-possible mode" to work? during combat, (<ctrl> caps lock) displays the 1-100x enabled message. but there is no speed increase.
Thanks

To get it to work, first try this version, and also look at your "fps" option in the base game's data/config/settings.json file.  The possible speed-up is larger if you have a higher base frame rate.  If you have a powerful CPU, in smaller battles you can reach like 5x or more.

Download SpeedUp 1.2.2 (https://bitbucket.org/DarkRevenant/speedup/downloads/SpeedUp_1.2.2.7z)

Version 1.2.2:
- Updated for Starsector 0.98a-RC7

I love this mod, but the latest update broke the middle mouse button functionality to get 2x speed in battles (I don't know whether the update to the mod or Starsector itself broke it), and the Caps Lock is both a toggle (way more inconvenient for momentary boosts) *and* is harder to reach.

Weird.  Anyway, there's a minor issue with the json where you've bound middle-click *twice*.  I'd suggest redownloading the mod and seeing if the issue clears up.  If not, it might be some kind of key-binding conflict or an incompatibility between your mouse's driver and Starsector's input handler.

My good sir, I know what you are referring to and I did that myself in the hopes that that would fix things. It did nothing. That's also the only edit I have made to the file.

It's also worth noting that prior to this update, the non-toggle Speedup was working perfectly. I don't know whether the update to the mod or to Starsector itself broke it.

Wait, I redownloaded from scratch (and I could swear I did this before) and my problem is completely fixed now.

How odd. I blame the Mercury retrograde!  ;D

Thanks for your help anyway, man. This mod is not flamboyant or eye-catching by any means but it's among the very greatest of quality-of-life mods out there. I literally could not imagine playing without it. Kudos!

How do I speed down? 0.5x or less speed

Hi jr3749352123

Because of the flexible way Dark.Revenant has designed this mod you can customize any speed up or slow down to any key or mouse bind you require.

For your request for example we can add the following text snippet to your Starsector\mods\SpeedUp\data\config\SPEED_UP.json file before the "# Options can be added or removed as desired" line to bind alt + middle mouse button to "change speed to 0.5x (half) speed" while held.

Code
        {
            # Hold ALT + MOUSE2 to engage 0.5x speed

Title: Re: [0.98a] SpeedUp 1.2.2

Dark, would it be possible to extend this mod to allow customisation of the "shift" speedup the game has built-in for hyperspace?

I want the game to default to this, and when I hold shift to run at normal speed. I find myself holding shift in hyperspace 95% of the time, so it doesn't make sense to me to have shift modifier speed up rather than the inverse.

Since this is a 'speedup' mod, it makes sense to take control and allow configurability of any areas of the game that perform speedup functions, since the way you write your mods is so fantastically customizable.

... you do know there is an option in vanilla to make the speed up a toggle right?
