Download the Vass for Starsector 0.8.1a (https://www.dropbox.com/s/6sejy3e1nmtksm3/The%20Vass.zip?dl=1)
Requires LazyLib (http://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=5444.0)
Supports Version Checker (http://fractalsoftworks.com/forum/index.php?topic=8181.0)

Since it is christmastime, i figured i should finally unveil the small project i have been developing for about two years: the Vass. The Vass is what i would want to call a "minifaction" mod: all ships follow a theme and are developed by the same shipyard, but they appear in Independent fleets, rather than as a separate faction. They use systems and weapons that work differently from normal ships, and can unfortunately not change their weapon loadouts (but can use normal hullmods).

The main defining feature for the Vass is their manipulation of time, something that affects all their shipsystems and weapons.

The Makhaira
Developed as a support ship, the Makhaira is a Vass-developed ship with shield-breaking as its sole purpose. While generally undergunned for its size, it can deal an astonishing amount of damage to enemy shields if left alone.

While the Makhaira appears to be a much simpler ship than the other Vass ships, it still contains technology with massive potential. Its definining feature, the Ahlspiess device, appears to break the very principle of causality by being able to fire ammunition that has already been fired at a different time. Many scientists have in vain tried to reverse-engineer this technological marvel, but they have all been stopped by the safety measured put in place by the Recipro corporation.

The Schiavona
The first ship ever developed by the Vass Shipyard, it has become a symbol for the the Vass corporations' mastery of time. Specifically designed as a hunting vessel, few ships has the raw speed required to outrun the Schiavona.

While its superior mobility and speed is what made it famous, its weapon loadout is nothing to be scoffed at. While much less flexible than the average ship in the sector due to the Vass Shipyard's unwillingness to abide by weapon mounting standards, it is still equipped to deal with a variety of threats. Having weapons from both Multa, Recipro, Perturba and Accel, it incorporates a wide variety of design philosophies.

The most defining feature of the ship is the Periodic Breaker, a powerful device capable of punching holes in space-time and effectively stopping time itself. This is accompanied by a red blast and a loud tearing sound, which can be heard even without any carrying medium such as air. The detailed information on HOW it achieves this is strictly regulated by its developer Accel.

The Curtana
An oddity among carriers, the Curtana was developed with a specific bomber loadout in mind. Equipped with several mid-range support weapons and a powerful defensive system, it can hold its own in direct combat with smaller ships.

After the massive success of the Estoc-class bomber, many customers asked for a dedicated carrier to field them. The Torpor corporation (until then unaffiliated with the Vass Schipyard) offered to fully sponsor the development of this new vessel, on the condition that their newly developed Time Haven Device was integrated as its core ship system. This would make it the first, and as of yet only, ship featuring technologies from all five Vass corporations.

While developed to field Estoc bombers, its landing bays can field any other fighter or bomber wing just as effectively. This would later allow it to field the Katzbalger fighters, albeit not as effectively as the Estocs it was initially designed to carry.

The Zhanmadao
A dedicated line cruiser by the Vass Shipyard. While lacking much of the mobility or utility shown in other Vass ships, it makes up for it in raw firepower and its unique disruptive ship system.

Unlike earlier Vass ships, the Zhanmadao was designed to operate in unison with other cruisers and capital ships to engage the enemy. Its weapon loadout can engage practically any threat, and its relative performance vastly increase as more enemy ships enters the area encompassed by its Chrono Disturber System. It is generally not as strong as other cruisers when alone, but in a fleet setting it can be an invaluable asset.

The Estoc
The only bomber developed by the Vass Shipyard, the Estoc-class bomber is equipped with a highly unusual payload capable of wrecking absolute havoc on exposed hull, weapons and engines. It is also equipped with the Temporal Recall system, allowing it to return near instantly to its carrier after a bombing run. Has above-average engagement range and speed.

The Katzbalger
The latest invention by the Vass Shipyard, the Katzbalger fighter fields a revolutionary time-stopping device small enough to be mounted in a fighter chassis. This however meant that there was no room for either shields or heavy armor. Katzbalger pilots are usually considered suicidal because of this.

Got an error, looks like a missile graphic doesn't exist.

Got an error, looks like a missile graphic doesn't exist.

Fixed. Seems like a last-second deletion was improperly done. I also found another error while searching for the source of this one, so that has also been fixed. I don't know how i managed to get it working on my machine, though...

Well, they don't have a faction so technically you could just add them. I did that and a few forcemarketupdate and I managed to find some fighters.

After playing with the ships for a few hours, I can say this with utmost certainty.

So, there isn't any missions for testing the Vass ships out, and it doesn't have Dynasector (not now anyways).

Will we at least get a test mission anytime soon?

---EDIT---

Never mind, I've tested them out myself and...

Both the cruiser/destroyer are the most useful out of the four ships. The frigate is pretty awkward and the carrier can come in pretty handy sometimes, but if you absolutely have to kill something and stop them from having a chance in return, use the Cruiser and Destroyer.

The destroyer has weaker weapons than the cruiser, but more than makes up for it with the ability.

The cruiser slows down enemies near it while ability is in use, think it's also passive as well.

It's not quite a fully passive ability... all the ships travel 20% (i think) faster in time... and the slowdown field is a toggle.

Well, as a matter of fact...

Download Hotfix (https://www.dropbox.com/s/6sejy3e1nmtksm3/The%20Vass.zip?dl=1)

...the lack of mission was not intentional: when fixing a game-breaking bug with hotfix 0.1a, some stuff seems to have disappeared without me noticing it. This patch adds it back in again.

The patch does not break saves.

*Adds in two test missions that somehow disappeared in the previous version
*Adds about five new variants for Vass ships that also disappeared in the previous version

So, I spotted a Curtana at least ONCEin someone's fleet (they were an enemy fleet) and could have obtained it but I wasn't able to salvage it (it was an unlucky run)

Sadly, that was the only time i'd spot a Vass ship in my current playthrough.

Is there a possibility to decrease their rarity by just a small margin, so they're a slight bit more common?

Or are they essentially supposed to be super-rare ships with moderate abilities?

(Is there also a possibility to find their weapons, even though they're kind of built in? Or maybe some "alternate" Vass ships that don't have built-in weapons, but are weaker, ability-wise as a result?)

(I also find they're needing just a little bit more Ordnance Points, especially when you put their faction-specific hull-mods on. Possibly a 2/3/4/5 OP increase to their current OP levels. Alas, it's an afterthought.)

I was actually afraid that they appeared too often in the campaign. I can definitely decrease the rarity; they are only supposed to be somewhat rare. I have simply not tested them in the campaign enough to test the drop rates 100%. Was your campaign before the latest hotfix? They became more common in that (since they have more variants, the total drop rate increases).

(Is there also a possibility to find their weapons, even though they're kind of built in? Or maybe some "alternate" Vass ships that don't have built-in weapons, but are weaker, ability-wise as a result?)
Weapon drops are possible, though I don't have any hardpoint sprites for any of them, which is why I have decided against implementing it for now.

As for the non-built-in ships... it's problematic. I tried that originally, but their abilities need to be so significantly weakened that they might as well not have them. Some of the ships also have behind-the-scenes code that forces their weapons to be built-in (the Ahlspiess device comes to mind). There's also the fact that the time-stopping code runs into some issues with other modded weapons (i have managed to get ~500000 damage/second from some) so i feel that compatability needs to come first, here.

That said, Vass ships with alternate weapon loadouts are a planned feature. Don't know when those are coming, though.

(I also find they're needing just a little bit more Ordnance Points, especially when you put their faction-specific hull-mods on. Possibly a 2/3/4/5 OP increase to their current OP levels. Alas, it's an afterthought.)
I have thought along the same lines (especially since hullmods and flux vents/caps are their only customizable feature). I will probably work on this for the next version.

Alright, so I've tested out the Vass ships in missions and they definitely have to stay close to each other and swarm the enemy.

They simply aren't strong enough to strike it out on their own.

The main weapons of each ship (except both cruiser-sized ships) are at the least, pretty lacklustre. I found it hard to get through the shield of even a Condor-Class Carrier with the Schiavona (even using the kinetic cannons and timestop), while the Makhaira has serious survivability problems. It's flux goes out of the window using the primary, and it merely brushes most ships and sparkles them clean instead of breaking them.

Mabye it needs an EMP effect or something. I mean, it's purple, so it's gotta hurt a bit more and do some disruption, right?

The Zhanmadao and Curtana are alright to say the most of them. The Zhanmadao deals the most damage out of all the Vass ships, solely due to the beams and missiles (the fast, frontal firing ones)

The main problem with the Vass is how much flux output they have at all times.

Zhanmadao's become evident that the flux build up monstrously quick and cannot be sustained through battle, while it is somewhat the 3rd most energy consuming ship.

Schiavona is the 2nd most flux consuming ship, and given the lacklustre survivability of all Vass ships, this becomes a problem. Alas, the ability is exceptionally handy with the thruster hullmod, just...make sure to activate the ability when you're NOT under imminent danger to ensure maximum survivability. As for the main gun? Needs a tad bit more damage for the enemy to really feel it. Not over 100+ more damage, 25 - 75+ more damage should be ok. Mabye even add 5 - 10 EMP damage for a very minute disabling effect, doesn't even have to arc, since the weapon's rounds split into three.

The most flux consuming ship however is a very dirty offender. The Makhaira dishes out little damage compared to it's flux consumption, as I have tried multiple times in attempting to hit all of it's shots, only to find I have overloaded (even with max caps) because the flux builds up so dangerously quickly and the ships under attack have barely taken enough damage for the gun to be a threat.

Not to forget that the armor/hulls of the ships cannot afford to take hits, but these are very high tech ships, so I guess they've got an excuse for fragile armor/hulls.

As for the alternate versions, take as much time as you need. We can wait (albeit I do not know how long. Just don't make the ships too powerful, haha).

I downloaded and enabled this mod mainly because I am still fascinated by the time-stopping nature of Periodic Breaker and had to mod an altered super version of it on-board my most used super-ship to see how that ship-system works. Had to have altered standalone copy of it so the cooldown is low and duration longer so I could test it with my kind of fun while leaving the ships that use the original version.. use the original version so the original and the altered/edited version remain two separate things to make things in my favor, as usual.

I gotta say; the amount of carnage I can inflict now on the Templars is especially satisfyingly brutal with that Periodic Breaker as they stand no chance to phase through or avoid my initial attack at their square faces as by the time their defenses kick in the other few dozen of my shots at them nuke them into glass puddle or in many shreds of bits and pieces. Awesome. 8)

I'll stick to a "maybe" on that one. On one hand: I quite like parts of the mod, and would like to get it up to 0.9. I can also think of a lot of cool things to implement for them with 0.9's new campaign mechanics, so I could make them more of a proper "special stuff faction" that they were original intended to be.

On the other hand, it would eat time I don't really have, and would require new sprites I lack the ability to create (though I do have a plan for those in the works). There's a lot of stuff that would simply end up better being re-made from scratch (though luckily most of the scripts should still work), both conceptually and balance-wise.

Depending on how my schedule looks in the next months, I might make a proof-of-concept 0.9 version with 1 or 2 fairly polished ships (the Schiavona would definitely be one of them), and see how hard/easy/fun that is to create and play.
