Fleet Size Limit
« on: November 22, 2015, 06:21:51 PM »

I am beginning to dislike the 25 fleet size limit.

Is it there for some technical reason or just for gameplay?

If for gameplay, it seems unnecessary. The fleet size is limited organically anyway because 1. There are only so many ships the player can manage without getting overwhelmed 2. At somepoint the upkeep / penalties becomes too much anyway.

Also its seems unnatural that fighters, frigates, shuttles etc take up the same room in your fleet as giant battleship.

Gameplay reasons and now a placeholder mechanism.

Gameplay balance reasons, I think. Used to be limited by logistics cap.

If you are sufficiently annoyed with it, edit the constant in the config file.

I preferred the logistics system. It felt more organic rather than a gamey cap.

I like in-depth simulations, but if you'd asked me how the hell the fleet cap worked before 0.7, I couldn't have explained it to you. So I feel that the simulation has shed some weight in the right places. But yeah, fighter fleets could use the extra slots.

Although now that combat officers are in the game, it feels as though the whole metagame has consolidated fleets towards the middle. You need enough non-fighter slots to occupy 10 officers or you won't be competitive against an enemy fleet that does. That leaves you with 14 slots for fighters which can easily be covered by 3 flight decks total, sometimes 2. I've made this point before, but let me put it more succinctly: The Astral is now the relic of a dead playstyle. You can still use it of course and it's quite a good tank, but its main selling point are 6 decks.

I just had this weird idea... Fighter squadrons used to use hangars for travel. They got axed, right? But the idea behind this is still sound. Why not lower the fleet maximum to 15 or 20 slots, but add 4 slots for each flight deck that the fleet provides, to be used only for fighter craft?

The more I play, the more I want the "Fighters as Weapons" proposed in a different thread to be a thing. It has amazing synergies with officers too! Make some skills be "fighters from this ship get +blah blah" and put that officer in charge of the carrier.

Then, if fighters are made cheap like weapons, you can even have ships that have fighters but no flight deck - the fighters from those ships are disposable support. I used to run a Hammerhead with a Broadsword wing (just enough hangar space) and it was great fun to have them escorting me.

Sorry, I got a little off topic :P

I do not understand the reasoning at all, especially given that AI fleets seem to have no such cap?!

I would rather have it based on the skill level of the admiral, and some trade off between quality and quantity. The logistics system was perfect in that way. And AI and player should follow the same rules.

One of the reasons I love this game is because (despite being 2D) this game is far ahead as far as sci-fi realism is concerned compared to games like Homeworld that still follow 25 year old formulas. The admiral directly controls one ship, and commands the rest as it should be, along with the highly detailed and realistic (in sci-fi terms) ship management system.

I think the game should stick to that strength, and not add artificial and gamey mechanics like unit caps.

I haven't seen an AI fleet with more ships, thought I don't know if its possible. Combined fleets yes, but we can do that as well by sticking near a picket or something.

That sounds good to me!
