I'm probably in the minority on this but...
« on: September 02, 2015, 10:22:05 AM »

I would really love to see gamepad support. Or at least partial support. I have been pc gaming ever since the days of the x486 but I typically prefer a gamepad for most of my games and in fact for SS I use Xpadder and a 360 controller. I hold my gamepad in my left hand and my mouse in my right when I do battles.

The top down twin-stick action in SS just begs for use of a gamepad imo and I would really love to see it implemented if possible.

I love controllers, but I just don't think it would work. There's so many different controls in SS, and the exact placement of the mouse is critical.

Yeah, unfortunately it's just not practical:

As far as controller support, I don't really see adding it because the game pretty much requires the use of a mouse. It's hard to design an interface that works well for both keyboard/mouse and controllers, and in the case of Starsector, it's been designed for keyboard and mouse from the ground up.

(Also, please don't use ambiguous thread titles like this.)

If you can propose a comprehensive control scheme that'll work for all of SS's current mechanics, you might find someone in the modding forum willing to implement it.

Gamepad could help maintain shields and weapons faced different directions.

Biggest problem I see with this is you want the ship pointing one way, the weapons another and the shields another. KBM gives you control of 2 directions, as would playing it twin stick with a controller, but there are not enough buttons.

Here is my first draft for controls, maybe you could fine-tune but I can't see there being potential to split shield and weapon aiming.
movement on L-stick
strafing r2/l2
shooting and shields r1/l1
aiming R-stick
You'd have to stop aiming to use (f) powers or change weapons and it wouldn't give you separate control of shields.

Also WASD and shift AD gives more accurate movement control for this I think.

What if we introduce new mode, activated with hotkey/button (pressed or toggle). In this mode shields are decoupled from aiming direction and left in its current position. When this mode is deactivated, shields return to the aiming direction with normal speed. Let's call it "Fix Shields" mode. :) It could work both with mouse and gamepad. Also shields in this mode can be adjusted with two separate keys or buttons.

On the other hand, huge advantage in controlling the shields with mouse is the ability to quickly drop it and immediately raise in some other direction, including the opposite. (BTW from the lore viewpoint, it's a plain cheat. :) If this can be achieved somehow with gamepad, it's a breakthrough.

Ship control is one thing, but how would you comfortably navigate the menu and the tactics display?

Well some support in game engine is required anyway.

I tried playing it with a Trackpoint as a mouse the other day, which is similar to a joystick. It wasn't pretty. I feel like for precise aiming and for separate aiming and moving, you're going to want a mouse.

Partial support is certainly better than nothing. I only use the game pad for battles. But yes the moving of the shield independently from where you are aiming is the only major issue. I am pretty comfortable with my control scheme but then again I am only holding the gamepad in my left hand and using the mouse in my right. My setup is this:

Lt- shield toggle
Lb- strafe
L stick- wasd
Dpad and L stick button for weapons 1-5

If xpadder had a better mouse spring feature I would probably not need to even use the mouse at all in battles. Many pc gamers said gamepad support would be impractical for Terraria but then it went to consoles and sold a zillion copies. Just saying, some people would sacrifice a little of the finer controls to be able to kick back and play with a gamepad sometimes.

Maybe the Steam controller is an option? Would make that thing  much more interesting....

Well outside of official support I think my setup would probably be better than the Steam controller. Seems like no one has given it a good review at this point. For games like Civ I can see how the weird circle mouse pad thingy might be ok but for action like SS I'm prob best sticking with my Xpadder config.

Rather have touchscreen support than controller support imo.
