Space Jams

What do you guys listen to when you play Starsector? I usually let the game's music play along with any music from mods, but I do like to start some really high tempo techno music when I want to try a really challenging fight in a phase ship or the like.I play some Chemical Brothers "Go", Daft Punk "Harder Better Faster Stronger", or maybe Zircon's "Standpipe Valve".

If I'm just going for a bit more casual play I get some medium rock/ electronica, like Dark Moor's "Vivaldi's Winter", Course of Empire's "Infested", or anything by Frank Klepacki. My goodness is Frank Klepacki awesome.

What do you listen to?

Usually I just put my phone's music on shuffle, so what I hear is usually classic rock or stuff like The Replacements, Bruce Springsteen, Foo Fighters, or The Gaslight Anthem... Not really anything fitting the setting of a completely war torn star system, I know, but that's what happens.

Sometimes I'll throw on some instrumental tunes like film scores or something to get me into the game. Like the music from the docking scene in Interstellar during some big battle. Intense. It's awesome.

I turn the in-game music off.  Games before the mid-80s did not need music, or if the player wanted it, he played pop/rock of the day on the jukebox, radio, or record/tape player.

More often than not, I do not play music.

I must admit that when I played the Odyssey vs. Hegemony defense fleet much before 0.6, I sometimes played Icarus, Borne on Wings of Steel by Kansas.

If I want epic showdown, something like Battle of Evermore from Led Zepplein works, although that is more appropriate for a Tolkien-inspired fantasy setting.

Thunderstruck by AC/DC, at least parts of it, would fit in with Thunder wings when they nail something.  "You've been... THUNDERSTRUCK!"

When blasting my own ships for XP and spacing excess crew were options, Disposable Heroes from Metallica's Master of Puppets album comes to mind.  Albums Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets are amusing at times.

For someone who wants to space-out, maybe the whole Dark Side of the Moon album by Pink Floyd?

Expect great things if Alex ever gives us a music API. Currently we don't have much control over when/if music plays aside from just supplying songs to the game.

Another fan of the mod music here.
People have put a ton of effort into creating these mods, and the tracks they've made to accompany them just suit the 'mood' of the game so perfectly.

Sometimes some rock music, like System of a Down, Violent Pornography, or some electro house playlists.

Probably even Culprate Mainly Breeze at times.

Usually I just have some good music on...

If you're into bassy songs then it's worth looking into the Electro House genre (thankfully)

Still loves purple. Still not skilled enough to make a mod that doesn't get that one damn error.

Well, I do believe the current plans Alex has to expand how music works in the campaign layer will work to the favor of the Modiverse.
The ability to pick and choose tracks to play during specific combat scenarios however is something that I need in my life :)

Agreed.

Also on my wishlist is the ability to trigger individual combat scenarios on the campaign map and script events during said scenarios. Parts of that are currently doable, the other parts I can only dream about.

Some gospelly/dark/alternative stuff like Florence and the Machine, Lana Del Rey, the Neighborhood, etc.
Fits into the game surprisingly well, actually, especially if you craft the playlist well enough so that you're feeling music that is simultaneously depressing and hopeful.

Wellll ... I can talk about what I listen to while working on Starsector. (I shall note here that I love Stian's music for Starsector, especially, cough, the new tracks he's made that you guys haven't heard yet. :D)

So, what I like when working on Starsector: think "space" and "dark". And "electronic", actually, because scifi.

If I'm feeling more ambient, Sabled Sun on Cryochamber ("Cinematic Dark Ambient") is good - or heck, anything from Cryochamber, but particularly the spacey stuff.

Synthwave is fun. Anyone into that? My top picks would be Carpenter Brut and Laserhawk because the French are the best at electronic music. (Has no one noticed Daft Punk in Starsector yet? - their soundtrack for Tron is the best thing about the that movie.) Adjacent to synthwave - or maybe it's just dark synthwave - I quite like "darksynth", starting with the Darktech album by Quantum, or The Wrath of Code by Dan Terminus.

To push it a bit more toward Goa/Jungle/Drum & Bass/whatever with overt scifi themes, everything by Cybernetika is lots of fun - there's at least one remix of a System Shock 2 track in his discography ("Hydroponics" for those in the know). You could start with "The Scythe of Orion" (which is, by the way, a bloody brilliant name that I wish I'd thought of and used in Starsector somewhere). I've made a *lot* of Starsector stuff to Cybernetika.

I'm also partial to the Dredd soundtrack and a few tracks from They Bleed Pixels.
Yes! The Dredd soundtrack is great.

I am buying most of the aforementioned albums in the post above now, because oh wow my gods's sweet everything, what is this ambrosia of the ears? Thanks David!  ;D

(just for future reference, my wallet hates you, but he's an *** anyways)

Playlists I recommend:

https://soundcloud.com/fastland/sets/blackrock-drive-yards  ;)

https://bgregory.bandcamp.com/album/exigency-lp

https://open.spotify.com/user/cycerin/playlist/31uFZtYejxgqzHCaT9A9yi

Specific tracks:

Stellar Remnant from Exigency LP, has that 90s sci-fi mystery thing nailed down so hard it's not even funny
Anything by Space Art, 70s analogue synth space music with tons of arpeggios
Pleine Lune by Scratch Massive, french stuff but with hardly any disco or dance leanings, just makes you think of massive nebulae and giant stars
Matter by Kenton Slash Demon, a dark and subtle track about space and time driven by a solid dance beat
Seconding Lazerhawk, also look into Starcadian, both are kind of the same thing, very 80s
Also Gimme Summer EP by Kid606, just an amazing album to listen to while modding
Also from Kid606, Recollected Ambient Works, Vol.1: Bored of Excitement (best album title ever)

I'll have new things to listen to, but in the past i listened to the space dreams channel on di.fm. There are ads which were jarring sometimes, but the feeling of cosmic  contemplation juxtaposed with the strife of humanity (in this case me) felt appropriate.
