Kaspersky has worked for me before. It's kind of my emergency goto. Don't know if it's still free, though.

There's also linux.  ;p

EDIT: I usually run AVG, though it's kind of a hog.

Adblock+ would still help you out though unless the place he gets his minecraft mods are those *** ones with the anti-adblock crap... (I don't play minecraft so I wouldn't know)
Also I use avast! myself
Also, I'd avoid MSE as it is the lowest rung on the ladder for a program to be considered an antivirus program

You can still get virus for just idling your computer, you will need a firewall AND router firewall, and because some even native Microsoft software are still liable to get virus in to your computer just for being connected to the internet.

Malwarebyte has been very good to me for the last... 7-9 years I used it. (When I bought it was 15$ for life, now its per year payment) Tho the Free version the only difference is only allowing you to scan not active protection. Together with a free firewall will do the trick. Always good to have two software to catch stuff one would miss.

Yup i use COMODO firewall an TP-link built in firewall.
Just need that free AV that will work and not be tax heavy on resources.

By the way o you guys/girls turn off AV* while playing games?

*active protection that is

Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Firewall, hardware firewall, and common sense.  No viruses ever.

Other types of malware are more common, similar to how getting a cold is more common than contracting pneumonia.  Spyware, adware, etc.  This stuff will sneak in no matter what you do, sometimes.  Fortunately, it is pretty easy to get rid of it with occasional scans.  Malwarebytes is good to have around for such occasions (free version, of course).

+1 from me (my exact setup and viewpoint too  ;))

I'm using AVG at the moment. In the past I've tried Comodo's suite (too naggy), Microsoft Security Essentials (which went from one of the best to the worst free antivirus over the years), and Avast (decent, but had to switch because it occasionally caused a BSOD when closing Chrome).

I also use a custom hosts file to block common ad/malware domains at the OS level. This isn't that hard to do and provides a good base-level protection. You can find instructions and hosts sources easily through Google. For an even easier route, Adblock Plus includes an optional filter list that blocks malware domains, though this can slow down page loading and only protects your browser.

But as DR said, common sense is important. I've never had a virus because I avoid unsafe situations in the first place. If there's something I want to run but I don't trust the source, Sandboxie can isolate programs and prevent them from accessing/modifying anything else on the system.

Bitdefender Free Antivirus is the #1 right now for % of baddies caught. It's also fairly light on system resources. Alternatively, go to AV-Comparatives and make up your own mind. ;)

You need to do more than just idle to catch viruses these days. A router as a hardware firewall and decently well-informed browsing choices will make you perfectly safe even without an antivirus. It doesn't 'just happen'. You need to click that porn.exe first mang.

I don't even worry about 'em anymore. No, the threat of viruses has been replaced by the threat of ***-ware and programs that call home to tell some company about what you're doing, your activity being logged, persistent cookies and all that nasty stuff. That's why I have the Windows Firewall set up two-way and with a whitelist. Haven't needed an antivirus for years.
