I name my ships often based on their class. My prefix is CAT (Catan Allied Terrae).

My Ships:
– CAT Cumulonimbus, Stratocumulus, and Borealis, Tempest-class
– CAT Nailgun, and Jackhamer, Hammer-class
– CAT Linguini, Langoustine class (I call EVERY Langoustine the Linguini)
– CAT Conch, Coral, and Crossbow, all Clam-class
– CAT Stout, Stalwart, and Sentinel, all Sickle-class PD variants
– CAT Nemo, Orca-class

I usually let my ships keep their game given names and just change their prefix, i change it to PSS which is Pearlian Service Ship, Pearlian is the name of a government in a story i wrote once a long long time ago the Pearlian government is your standard White Knight type of people they claim to be the protectors of the systems ( they control 30 of the known systems in their lore ANYWAY) but sometimes i'll change names if there is something that should be recognized for example i have a ship calls PSS Asteroids because of something i described in a thread i made.

Also I totally had the name BEFORE the cruiser.

I also change the type of ship it is, for example "Strike" frigate.

I don't know how appropriate this post will be considering I have a passion for the inappropriate.  ::)

My fun ones are...

ISS Can't Touch This, Tempest-class Nanof*g frigate (Starfarer's Vagabond, for us Eve players lol),
ISS Motherfu**er, Hyperion-class Backdoor Love frigate,
ISS WTF BOOOOOOM, Lasher-class Nukulear frigate (this one is my giant piranha bomber setup I made a thread about).
ISS Stranger Danger, Paragon-class Ch*ld M*lester Battleship (fit with 2 HILs, 6 Gravitons, 9 Tacticals, both range upgrades and turret gyros).

On another save I have the Serenity, Firefly class, flying solo. Unforunately it's not a harmless freighter, it's a beast tanked Aurora with heavy blasters.  :-\

Don't know the names for the specific ships I have but I do use stuff like
ISS Nautilus (Because Nautilus is the most epic name ever. xD)
The Normandy (I'm a Mass Effect fan :P)
ISS Titan
Star Destroyer (Because those Eagle Class Cruisers...don't they look like Star Destroyers?!)
Falconian

Can't think of the others.

I've been giving all my ships weird old-timey names, mostly after officers from the American Civil War:

Wager Swayne
Savvy Read
Felix Zollicoffer
John Witcher
Sally Archer
Manning Force
Bushrod Johnson
Thomas Moonlight
Strong Vincent
Victor Vifquain
and my personal favorite, Zealous Tower

This is now my signature.

EDIT: It was a bit long, so I edited it down to the good bits.

So having played enough to give a real answer I have to say I almost always use names to help me remember what stuff is. So Wedgie was a tempest, haha.

I named a Medusa Booyeah. I called a venture backspace since he's too slow and always in the back. Fenrir is a favorite name for wolf class frigates.

I pretty much name them randomly as I go.  :)  I also just number members of the same class by acquisition order. So Fenrir, Fenrir II, Fenrir III et al.

It's funny how in the modern day, Fenrir continues to get roughly the same amount of respect as a name that it did back in the days of the old Norse, given that the biggest thing he did was eat Odin, while his son-- my personal favorite of the great Norse wolves-- Skoll ate the *** SUN.

That is so metal. And the Vikings didn't even realize it.

For those wanting something different, you might want to try looking at the Culture series. Thanks to Seabee for pointing that out :)

I've always been a fan of the Culture naming convention (series of sci fi novels by Iain Banks). Some examples:

Unfortunate Conflict Of Evidence
Just Read The Instructions
Congenital Optimist
Reasonable Excuse
Honest Mistake

More here (Wikipedia link). Something about them always makes me laugh -- the idea of a sentient, hyper-intelligent AI-warship with a name like "Just Passing Through" is so ridiculous. But hilarious. Might get some ideas from that.

Mine are always metallic elements. always has been since Sins of a Solar Empire.
Atm Rolling with the Ferrus and Lead Wight. (yes its wight. as in the spirit. not Weight)

Though i tend to switch to Warhammer Primarch's on occasion.

Tend to use alot of latin too. love latin names good for that gravitas feeling. (Culture reference there, those names were downright hillarious)

ISS Nautilus (Because Nautilus is the most epic name ever. xD)
The Normandy (I'm a Mass Effect fan :P)

You realise Nautilus was a submarine ship hybrid. it was a mythological ship, the  greatest pirate vessel ever run under one; Captain Nemo (yes thats also nemos reference)

Also the Name Normandy was taken from the beach originally to give it more of a war feeling.
