Tractoring broken ships back to station
« on: February 18, 2012, 10:52:26 AM »

Scenario: A really difficult battle, you win but only barely, your big ship is destroyed during battle, big bummer. And no ships on the enemy side are recoverable, you're left with small frigs/fighters.

How about adding a tractor-function based upon some skill (salvaging?), so at level 1 of salvaging you can salvage 1 frigate class ship, at level 2 you can salvage 2 frigate class and at level 3 you can salvage 3 frigate class OR 1 destroyer class.

What would the advantages be?
Don't have to refit a new ship.
Would be cheaper to repair in station than to buy a new ship.

What would the disadvantages be?
Having to train/recruit a whole new crew for the ship. :'(
When your fleet is tractoring ships they would move at decreased speed.

A step between Boardable and scrapped would be very nice

i like the idea but i feel like it should also tie into the ships in ur fleet somehow like ur ships cant traktor beam something larger than itself or you can put multiple ships to tractor beam a larger ship or possibly a seperate addon or ship class that specialises in it that would alow for the for the tractor beam ability to be more powerfull if u take the risk and weaken ur fleet by investing in it

Specialized salvage ships with tractor beams and repair drones to stabilize and haul in disabled ships might be fun. They could let you salvage vessels that are disabled and didn't come up as boardable. Maybe have each ship only capable of hauling one in at a time, so you'd have to pick which one you wanted - and the ship would only be repairable at a station or at one of your outposts with special repair facilities and resources to repair it. Could slow your fleet down significantly while hauling ships too, so you could use it to save your prize cruiser or haul back a ship you like -  but you'd be in for a slow trip back to repair facilities.

The damaged vessels could be sold to stations as scrap, or repaired to the point of being liveable (so your crew could finish the job) for a fee. Price to repair them might be 1/4 the cost of purchasing a new one, and sell cost maybe 1/10th. So you could make some money hauling them in to sell; or haul them in, pay for repairs, and then have your crew finish the repairs over the course of a few weeks for more profit or just to use them yourself.
