Mid-Destruction Pirate Fleet

I was following a pirate attack fleet while letting my CR be restored. While I did so, an independent fleet jumped the pirates. They fought at least once, and I dove in to try to hit the remnants before the independents got them. What I got, however, appeared to be the pirate fleet before it actually lost the ships it lost fighting the independents.

Four ships are marked as destroyed but I have yet to actually combat the pirates myself. It appears I was able to engage the pirates before their fleet actually lost the destroyed ships.
(also, it should be "The opposing fleet tries to disengage, but they won't be able to get away without a fight.")

Edit: also of note, I have the game running in the background, I haven't advanced from the screenshot, so if there's a specific action I can take either in the combat or perhaps in the log since I haven't advanced past this, please let me know if anything like that will help

Hmm. Unfortunately, I think I turned off the part of logging that would have been useful because it was too verbose :(

Going to have to do this the old-fashioned way, looking at the code to figure out how it might be possible...

If you don't mind pursuing them to see what ships they actually deploy, that definitely wouldn't hurt to know.

The lone hammerhead not "dead" in the screenshot has 64 hull as we arrive onto the battlefield. nothing else

In the post battle screen it only showed the hammerhead, and loot behaves appropriately as well. 2 weapons from the ship, 2 fuel 5 supplies and some other little commodities. Nothing big like would have been expected from multiple ships and a buffalo freighter

I think I know what is happening here; the player is reaching the enemy before the ships "pop" on the campaign screen. You can see this when you mouse over a fleet that got its ass kicked

One more piece of information: you will get bounty for any ship that is already destroyed as if you had destroyed it. I encountered 2 frigates right after they had fought, one of which was destroyed - I killed the other and got bounty for both.
