Trading is *great* for earning XP!
« on: October 22, 2014, 01:42:41 PM »

Once you're sorted for money, you should definitely buy an Atlas or 2 and dump a few thousand food onto starving worlds.
Although the event states 1000 food will end the famine, you can get the inflated famine price for as much as you're carrying if you sell it all in 1 transaction.

1200 food, ~200 profit per unit = ~65k XP

That's waaaay quicker XP gain than you get from bounty kills.

Don't smuggle it though!
I gained 0 rep for the humanitarian aid (was already at +100)...... then got a -126 rep for failing a smuggling investigation  ???

Just as a heads up, while you can do that, it's not an entirely safe option :)

I'm intrigued as to what that means  ;D
Is the economy going to get really lopsided?

:edit:

I just got 250k experience (and ~1M profit) from dumping 3500 food on a hungry Volturn; should I expect some horrible side-effects :D

Changes as of October 20, 2014
  • Added penalty for overselling food to market with a shortage (clever speculator... ruinous prices... etc)
No idea what that actually means, but apparently it's a thing.

I'm a bit confused why it works at all - for usual commodities selling huge amounts lowers the marginal rate drastically as you go over the demand, to the point where the profit per unit goes negative. Does the event stop that from happening?

The event works by increasing the price. It probably could work by reducing the stockpiles (and it already does that), but it's easier to control the actual price increases by managing the price directly. It does have this side effect, though...

Is it possible to cause famine on a food producing planet such as tartessus?

I did a little experiment; bought all their food(~22k) and put it in storage.
Left and returned a few days later, and the market stockpile had returned right back to where it was.

There's another typo in that text: "the report indicats" instead of "indicates".

It's not exactly easy. You'd have to clean them out consistently for a few months, and then the chance of a food shortage might go up. Whether it does or not depends on whether the fraction of food that actually goes on the market (10%-20% of the stockpiles, iirc) is enough to make the difference between met and unmet demand. That is, if it's overstocked, chances are you won't be able to buy enough.

Looking at the stats, the (rolling average) food stockpiles at Tartessus seem to be at about 2x its food demand. So the answer is "no". A place that's closer to the edge, you could tip over.

Thank - fixed.
