That sounds pretty awesome, actually; if they can pull that off, they might be able to save quite a few of those folks. 

The issue there is that, short of a heart bypass, when people have gone into severe shock and are in arrest, preventing brain death is almost impossible atm; we simply don't have the tech to keep the brain oxygenated, and unfortunately, it's the part that dies first; unlike a heart, you can't keep a brain on ice and shock it back to life :)

Heh, very true. So instead of keeping it oxygenated, they are going try to get it cold enough to slow down the damage. It is a little creepy though how the brain activity actually stops, then starts again. Raises a whole bunch of questions about consciousness, etc.
