That sounds pretty awesome, actually; if they can pull that off, they might be able to save quite a few of those folks. 

The issue there is that, short of a heart bypass, when people have gone into severe shock and are in arrest, preventing brain death is almost impossible atm; we simply don't have the tech to keep the brain oxygenated, and unfortunately, it's the part that dies first; unlike a heart, you can't keep a brain on ice and shock it back to life

Heh, very true. So instead of keeping it oxygenated, they are going try to get it cold enough to slow down the damage. It is a little creepy though how the brain activity actually stops, then starts again. Raises a whole bunch of questions about consciousness, etc.
