Java
« on: May 14, 2014, 03:07:26 AM »

I have been trying to run Uomoz (well load save files it will run) and have just double checked my java to find that I have 32 bit, and that is fully up to date. Will it be possible for me to properly run large mods like that on this system?

Requires Modified vmparams file to load any game. Open your Stasector directory, edit the vmparams file notepad, inside it replace -Xms512m -Xmx512m with -Xms1024m -Xmx1024m.
For Mac users, the vmparams file is called info.plist and is located in /contents folder. Also requires to put jre 64bit in the main Starsector folder, instead of the vanilla 32bit version.

what I'm saying is I do not have a  jre 64bit folder on my system, at all. Java is up to date, with version 7 of the 32 bit.

I have just transitioned to use 64-bit Java, and I traced my steps to help you out...

Open vmparams with notepad and followed replace instructions

copied the entire contents within the jre7 without copying the jre7 folder itself

placed/pasted them inside the jre folder of Starsector, and chose to 'copy and replace' all files while merging all folders.

So far, it didn't crash on me... yet.

This one is on vanilla, though, so...

It took me a while to find this thread, but its been really useful to me.
In earlier versions i was always able to set my memory in vparams above the standard 512 for use with mods, but in the most recent version this stopped working.(0.6.2a and perhaps a few before it, i tend to check back infrequently.)
The fix in this thread solved that and now i am able to increase it like i used to.

(if your curious, the reason i did so was i tend to use Exerlin in combination with other mods, which is a drain on my computer)

Most generic computers will have trouble with large mods without 64-bit Java.  The above instructions have been a lifesaver in solving out of memory crashes on the large mods.

As far as feedback is concerned, I don't think this needs to be referred for the modding community. If it does seem necessary to refer, a thread link would do.

Now that I think about it, was these set of instructions/steps ever mentioned in any thread prior to this? I feel troubled by this.

I was able to play for ~4 hours just fine with the default version of Java included with the game. But you might as well install the 64-bit so you don't run into any trouble further down the campaign.
