Maybe after Alex has finished the main campaign, he can release some specialised mission Campaign packs that have various extended missions that occur within a larger campaign map at DLC pricing with some new ships, weapons and sound effects.

Maybe David can come up with a storyline or two? I mean who wouldn't pay $5 for a FTL or Homeworld storyline mission that sees you hounded across from one side to the other of the galaxy.

Significant similarities can be drawn with Starsector and Mount & Blade in that: the game doesn't end; there's no goals aside from player motive; interaction is done only through an "overworld". These similarities along with Gother's statement suggest that the final game's campaign will not be unlike Mount & Blade.

I mention the above only because Starsector has potential for an endless amount of "plug-in" scenarios in the same way that M&B does (granted, M&B doesn't have any such scenarios without mods). Who says Alex ever needs to make an end-game. Alex can just perfect and expand the current rendition of the campaign and add the ability to apply scenarios/meta-games (DLC and mods alike) to it to keep it interesting.

Example:
One scenario could be a galactic invasion. An ultimate badass race of aliens will invade your galaxy after a set amount of time. The aliens will conquest every system, one by one and if they overtake them all, you lose.

Mount and Blade actually does have end-states (you can conquer Calradia or retire a character and get an ending); it's just that very few players ever get there, because the developers made it kind of ridiculous to achieve them, through artificial rules that make it progressively (and unrealistically / ahistorically) difficult to do so.

Territory can't be conquered in Starfarer in the same way, but isn't that already a future goal of Alex's to implement?

Well, actually, it can be captured, just not in Vanilla.  Try Exerelin, Uomoz, Vacuum, etc.; capturing of stations and building new ones and all that can already be done.

I think it'll end up being an X3 style game where you can keep playing in the sandbox as much as you want.

I cherish that possibility.

you are playing them wrong then..

Don't tell me I'm playing anything wrong in a singleplayer sandbox game. Just don't.

Thinking like in terraria, Once you defeat the "Wall Of Flesh" Then the game enters "hardmode" with harder enemies and whatnot. Game needs bosses. Thinking of a giant mechanical spaceworm created by aliens as a boss to enter "end-state"
