My two cents
« on: January 22, 2014, 02:00:39 PM »

Hey, I'd like to say: Thank you for this game! It's amazing and without it, i would probably be outside a lot more XD
No in all seriousness I think Starsector is a brilliant game, and I'm looking forward to its next updates.
That said...
I have a few questions, mostly about future updates to the game. I was looking around in the files and I found something interesting: Sindrian Diktat... conversation it looks like? They were something like "Hey, take it easy" to a sarcastic "I'm shaking in my metal boots." Does that mean that "Open comm link" will allow us to actually negotiate with fleets or talk to them or something? It would be an interesting mechanic, in my opinion.
My next question is on the factions. Was the Cult of Ludd faction scrapped or something, or are they still going to make it into the game at some point? And I remember one of the Missions talking about the Hegemony vs Exar something. Are the Exar something people also going to be a faction too?
And lastly, before I let you go, I know you have the mining and planet operations or something in the works in an update coming out soon, but have you considered any side quests that would net you credits or ships or some other rewards? Like.. escort a small convoy of Buffalos from Corvus to Sindria or something? It would be interesting. I'm not being rude or telling the creator how to make his own game or anything, I was just thinking it would give more to do than blow away random fleets (Though thats fun too) and give a little more motivation.
Again, thank you very much for the game, and I'm enjoying the new update!

Hi! Thanks for dropping by, glad you're enjoying the game.

Yeah, the "Open comm link" option is a placeholder for now. Eventually, there'll be actual dialog with options to pick and such, as appropriate.

My next question is on the factions. Was the Cult of Ludd faction scrapped or something, or are they still going to make it into the game at some point? And I remember one of the Missions talking about the Hegemony vs Exar something. Are the Exar something people also going to be a faction too?

The Cult of Ludd will be in the game. The "Exar people", probably not so much, since they didn't do too well as of that mission. We'll see, though, I don't want to get into the specifics, and a lot of this is David's domain; I don't want to speak for him there.

Right, all that stuff is under consideration. I think the main point is that the campaign needs to give you more stuff to do - including reasons to blow away those fleets (other than "I want their shinies"). And it's going to do that. The details, I'd prefer not to talk about too much in advance, because things change during development.

Thanks for the reply!
Oh one more question before I forget, will there be a way to repair relationships with factions and are there certain bonuses if, say, you are friendly with a faction? Thanks!

That falls under the "talking about details in advance" category :)

Hey!  "Shinies" is a good enough reason for the gamer, munchkin, or sociopath.

EDIT:  That said, more stuff for campaign is good, especially for those who did not get the game solely for action or combat.

My first reaction is "Exar? Who the heck is that?".

To explain: Ivaylo has done pretty much all the writing up 'til the last patch. I've got access to a bunch of his notes and have reviewed a lot of the in-game descriptions (but, ahem, I neglected to read all the one-off mission descriptions - oops!).

My approach from here out is to sort of bend the interpretation of "the backstory so far", not so much cutting as being like "Well, sure that other historian interpreted events that way, but as you can see from my revised methodology the evidence we have implies an entirely different motivation for the Hegemony's formation post-Collapse." The player is seeing the backstory of the game through the lens of many in-game character's and institutions's interpretations & bias. This confuses the ability to say that some aspect of the game-world is absolutely one Known thing, but it tells a lot more about what is going on in the game-world contemporary to the player's interactions. You learn how the Hegemony wants history told, and tells you perhaps as much about the current Hegemony as it does actual history.

As for the Exar, er, I'm going to have to review all those mission descriptions. Some stuff is going to be shuffled out, some new stuff shuffled in. You'll see. It's going to be fun :D

I wouldn't stress about it much; retconning stuff isn't going to kill anybody, at least not minor stuff like Exar's story.

Really looking forward to seeing more about the Cult of Ludd and am really hoping that they'll get a distinctive look, personally; I've held off doing anything with them for almost two years now, largely because I felt like that would be stepping on your toes, especially if they were any good :)

"Dr. Kovatchev is a hack with a total lack of rigor that he compensates for with a blatant pro-Hegemony bias"

"Prof. Baumgart is a paid Tri-Tachyon shill who blithely dismisses all contrary evidence"

The dispute escalates to the point where a presentation at the Sector Historical Society's 215th Annual Conference is terminated in a violent physical altercation. The event is widely publicized in the popular media, resulting in impassioned speeches by university vice-chancellors, reams of commentary on the state of academia by pundits, and photographs of the incident being turned into thousands of image macros.

Two days later, both scholars are killed when their passenger ship is attacked and destroyed by pirates.

Wait, does that mean you completely took over  writing? Has Ivaylo left the development for good?

Yes on both counts. (Before you ask: everything was perfectly amicable, he's just very busy with other stuff.)

What can I say; The writer is dead, long live the writer! It's nice to see you getting even more involved in the game, David :)

I was about to ask for a blog-exposé about the sector's history from your new point of view, but I think I'd rather find out in game via new and updated dialog and ship-, weapon- and planet-descriptions :)
