The classic science fiction book series The Foundation series, by Isaac Asimov is about the collapse of the Galactic Empire and the struggle to minimize the subsequent dark age.  I read it when I was a kid and I hope that Starsector is either influenced by the Foundation Series or has easter egg(s) referencing it. ;)

Won't speak for Alex, though we're both really into this stuff (and trade science fiction book recommendations! It's fun).

I think I read the first book of the Foundation series back in high school but never got farther than that. It's weird though because I've read tons of classic science fiction and /most/ Asimov but just missed those ones. Still, the connection to the fall of Rome and all the tropes surrounding that are probably pretty obvious and they're strong themes in a *lot* of stories.
