The Mercury shuttle might be usable in combat if it had enough OP to use two light needlers and get both ITU and Unstable Injector/Augmented Engines hullmods.  Since it does not, it is useless in combat aside from rare lone Buffalo or Piranha fights.  Unless it got better stats, a third gun will be useless.  It's only use is for boarding ships since it holds a lot of marines for the Logistics it costs, and if it is destroyed from a failed hard dock you lose very little.

These ships are fantastic David. And I agree with the decisions behind your reasoning for the Heron, I can't wait to use it in-game.

It wasn't in the game for a good long time, though. The evolution was the old shuttle became the new shuttle, then the new shuttle became the Mercury (in 0.6.2a), and the now-unused old shuttle changed a bit and became the Hermes.

Mh, the color palette is determined by the era the ship design stems from. I think it would make sense for pirates not to have any uniform palette or ship-pool, they should use whatever they can get their hands on. They are not an unified faction after all. I would't mind to see the occasional Aurora in the hands of a rich pirate lord.
I agree, although I really like HELMUT's "pirated" versions of other ships.

And maybe, once all the faction symbols are done, at least some of the bigger sprites could receive faction specific versions with their symbol painted on?
I'd really like to see that; if nothing else, it'd give us better visual identification of enemies in combat.  I'd really prefer colored livery, though; then player fleets would look quite different than the Faction fleets, which would really help in large battles.

Anyone else think "Firefly" reading the Hermes decription?

Being that Hermes is the flying god that invented fire, I conclude that you are a clever man.

Wonderful work. What ship systems do they have, I wonder... the Monitor is quite enigmatic with that sun dial-like protrusion.

Would it be possible to make a timelapse video where you record the process of drawing the sprite based on the concept?

Looking at the workflow in live action would be a great opportunity to learn to draw as you do, or atleast get a better sense of how to tackle such large-scale sprites efficiently.

Modders would greatly appreciate such a video too. No narration is required, just a speeded up timelapse of the sprite as you draw it, nothing more.

Pleeeease?  ;D

Re. Bird of prey names:

Well, you can't very well call a carrier the "Shrike" you know? Doesn't feel right. Plus I can't get the Hyperion Cantos Shrike out of my head when I see the word ...

Would it be possible to make a timelapse video where you record the process of drawing the sprite based on the concept?

That'd be really cool, actually (and my computer is finally good enough to run video capture!). I've just ... never done this before and totally suck at video. Will see what I can do.

Quote from: David
Heron #1 simply doesn’t scream “Hegemony” to me
This is confusing, the Hegemony doesn't use any of the midline ships the Heron is derived from. Why would it need to scream "Hegemony"?

Hah! Good point. There's a bit of disconnect between the actual ships used by factions in the game and my (personal) take on the narrative. I see the Hegemony fleet being filled with stuff between low and mid-tech with occasional specialist high-tech ships, the mid-tech being the upper end of military deployment from the last days of the Domain. I think this may be a matter of shuffling orders of battle around a bit -- say, give the Hegemony garrison and assault fleets a higher load of heavy-gun low-tech ships while their patrols and convoys would focus more on mid-tech cruisers. And then there's the question of whether this deployment would hold up in the actual game.

David, i wondered: are you taking inspirations from some of the mods around here? I found the Heron to be pretty similar looking to Kadur's Theocracy mod's ships. Not saying it's a bad thing, far from it! Even if it's just an alpha, Starsector's modding community already pooped an awful lot of ships, which some of them even rivaling quality with your own (shots fired!) so it wouldn't be surprising if the modding section was a source of inspiration for you.

Also, while you commented about pixels noise on your ships, will you eventually rework some of the currently implemented ships? Right now i'm thinking about the Venture, when you look in the modding section, there is actually very few Venture kitbash due to the big amount of pixel noise on this ship, making it fuzzier than the other vanilla ships. Perhaps smoothing it a bit in the future when you'll have some free time?

As said, I do glance at the mods from time to time to see what people get up to but really try not to think of them when drawing. It doesn't feel right somehow and, ultimately, drawing these spaceships is about what I want :) Well, Alex too. He does pay the bills, after all. But it's just something I love doing in my own little world in my head so I embrace that creative indulgence which I don't get very often in my day job that involves a lot of management and artistic compromise.

Regarding revising old ships, it's not something I want to think much about unless I see glaring problems. It is better to have a less than perfect but complete set of game assets than to have a more perfect but incomplete set of game assets. I try to keep in mind that the goal here is to make a game, not to make the perfect game asset. Forest, trees.

For recording, Free Screen Video Recorder can get you stuff recorded off your screen, meanwhile for editing you can use Windows Movie Maker to assemble your video.

Another really intuitive and easy to use tool for video editing is Pinnacle Studio, which gives lots of tools and features to play with, yet has such well designed interface, that allows even for a complete beginner to instantly grasp video editing, without any need for tutorials. Pinnacle studio costs money, but the other two tools are totally free. Pinnacle is just incase you want a fancier and more flexible editor for videos, otherwise Windows Movie Maker can get the job done.

1. Free Screen Video Recorder: http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/products/dvd/Free-Screen-Video-Recorder.htm
2. Windows Movie Maker: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-live/movie-maker#t1=overview
3. Pinnacle Studio: http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/studio/standard/

Alternatively, theres also the super-easy mode with an online free screen recording website:
