ARES! An old classic game, very similar to Starsector.
« on: November 25, 2013, 05:28:56 PM »

Has anyone here every played Ares? (Mac only game  :-\)

It is an old game, but Starsector reminds me of it a lot. In Ares you:
- Could command any ship in your fleet.
- Had tactical control over all ships in your fleet, able to give them specific attack/defend/escort orders.
- Captured planets and collected resources to build different classes of ships (I know, industry isn't yet added into Starsector).
- All real time combat/command.

One of my favorite features of the game was how the camera scrolled in and out seamlessly, and would automatically zoom in and out to keep your target in view.

Ah, Ares.  Played the Escape Velocity series more, but I definitely had fun with it.  An old, unremembered classic, done, like a lot of shareware stuff in those days, by a single man--in this case one Nathan Lamont.

Also, it

Ares is utterly classic and has inspired and influenced me in so many ways. I actually play it on my mac now and then - rough around the edges compared to Starsector, but pretty funky nonetheless.

I've actually been considering to make the Ishiman fleet as a mod, but the game's weird ship size classification gives me a headache when it comes to porting it to Starsector's more naval take on the concept.

EDIT: Actually, there even is an Ares homage in Blackrock, the scalar deracinator sound. ;D

Ahhhh such a fun game.  Definitely a favorite of mine although EV captured my heart much more.  Playing local Co-op was a treat!

The thing that *** me off the most was that, if you did a good tactical job and didn't actually lose your ships, eventually they'd be useless because they'd run out of power for their guns.  And there's no refuelling tanker or whatever - you're stuck with getting the ship destroyed and building a new one.

The code is now open source. You would be a fool to buy it there.
There was a project to port it to new Mac OS (only runs on the old Mac OS) and to windows. You can look them up, ones called Xsera (ares x backwards) and the other is on Ares Central (project is called Antares).

Wow, the music is so awesome.

I think so too, my favorite game music of all time! Maybe someone will make a mod to include that music in Starsector.....

EV (the original) was my favorite game of all time! The other two werent bad, but the original.... well, its the original!

I find Starsector is a hybrid of Ares and EV. Very cool game so far (and Ive only just started).

EV Nova was the game that got me into the space-sim genre, and it taught me to "save early, save often" :).

Ares has forever instilled in me a love of top-down space games, and is easily up there in my favorite games of all time with MOO and EV. So much so, I bastardized the Ishiman race for my nick.
