Starsector Fails to start.
« on: September 13, 2013, 05:45:27 PM »

Starsector works on my laptop, albeit painfully slowly
But when I try to run it on my desktop it flat out fails to start, error message below.
I tried increasing -Xms512m -Xmx1024m but there was no noticable effect
Notes on PC:
- Windows 7 64bit
- fully updated graphics drivers
- latest java version is installed
- I put it together myself, so there *might* be an issue there? not likely, but possible.
Spoiler
Error occured during initialization of VM
Could not reserve enough space for object heap
Could not create the Java virtual machine.

Have you tried rebooting recently? It sounds like it's having trouble allocating enough memory - that is to say, there isn't that much RAM available on your system in one continuous block. A reboot could solve the issue.

My desktop has 16GB of RAM, so i doubt that's it, but i'll give it a shot.

Edit: just restarted my desktop, and immediately tried to launch starsector after it finished starting up, the same problem occured.

Hmm. Can you try reducing the -Xms512m -Xmx1024m to something like -Xms512m -Xmx512m? That could help.

Also, can you try running the game using the starsector.bat that comes with the game, under the starsector-core directory? First, though, edit it so that it uses your system's version of Java - just remove the "..\jre\bin\" part on the first line, so that it starts with just "java".

Either changing the -Xms/-Xmx or setting it to using my systems java made it work perfectly.
Decided to go with changing it to use my java, as that seems a better idea than messing with memory allocation.
seems I have to use the .bat to launch though, but that's not really a problem to me.

feels so good finally being able to play in glorious 1920*1080

Thanks for the help Alex.

Good call, I think. Glad you got it working!
