New Let's Play Series! Exerelin Mod
« on: June 02, 2013, 01:07:16 PM »

So I am a bit of a noob at Starsector and I'm also just starting my channel so go easy  :P  I have only been playing for a week or so but I have logged a lot of hours so I am not completely worthless at the game. I breezed through most of Sprog's and Axeige's Lps and I noticed there aren't that many YT'ers doing vids for SS so I thought I'd make a contribution. I am also starting with the Exerelin mod because(it's great! and) I didn't see any vids on it.

If anyone has any tips, hints or feedback I am all ears!

Here is the link to ep1- I do describe a lot of the basics for anyone that may not be familliar with the game, I am aware that most of you will already know these things but it could help get newbies into the game :)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DTWxvKH28s

Thanks! One thing I am unsure of is how to take over stations? I assume it is just done automatically but I'm not really sure of all the details. I haven't exactly read the entire Exerelin thread, haha..

Stations are taken over by "In-system station attack fleets" which are always composed of a single Atlas class ship or similar. This atlas will go to the nearest enemy or unclaimed station, fly around it a whole bunch to simulate boarding, and if it is still alive after a time it will go straight to the station and make it yours. These ships are weak and will usually be killed by even the smallest of fleets.

As for the LP in general, I highly approve and hope to see more.

Thank you! And thanks for the info. So I assume you just wait for them to leave from your base, escort them to wherever they are headed while taking out enemy fleets. If you capture an Atlas from another faction, and if you sell it to your base will it then crew up and take off for another station??

I don't think the stations are currently able to crew ships that you sell to them, but otherwise yeah, just defend the station attack ship and it will eventually take the enemy station.

Alright, first things first: the iron-weaver machine gun is great for killing missiles, not for killing enemies. On the scarab class frigate, I suggest switching that front-most iron-weaver with a splinter volley-gun, and then replacing the duel shard autocannon with a solenoid quench cannon or a squall cannon. The ship itself should prove to be a bit more powerful under AI control due to how well the AI handles the ship system of that ship.

As for the new map in general, you basically have a position that sacrifices some ability to expand for a more defensible location. Not much I can help you with in this respect, other than to suggest that if you decide to go to war with an enemy faction yourself instead of waiting for war to come to you, attack the nihil, because the other two factions I noticed make an alliance. To attack the pirates is to go to war with both the pirates and the gedune. I actually suggest holding off on making war at the time, though, because you might have a chance at becoming allies with the nihil, which would even the odds quite well for you. Keep in mind that those trade-guild fleets are quite useful in that they will occasionally sell you ships and weapons from another faction, and that as the smallest faction the trade guild will be occasionally re-routing supply fleets to your station, giving your faction an overall boost in power at the cost of the other factions.

Oh, and I suggest saying something in this thread when you release a new video, so that people will know that you've released a new video.

First off, thanks joey, it's great watching your LP's as I get great feedback on parts of Exerelin that could do with a bit of work :)

Totally agree on the problems with the initial start of the game. Depending on the system setup, faction setup and diplomacy you can get into an annoying situation. One of the reasons I haven't done much about it is that the early game (when there are still abandoned stations about) tends to finish fairly soon and I feel it is more of a prelude or setup for the main part of the game.

In your position (where the pirates and you were directly competing for the same territory) I probably would have gone to war with them ASAP as this will result in a number of things: Extra money/XP for you (from both increased wages and winning combat), war targets for your faction, enemy station attack ships you can easily kill to stop them expanding, opportunities to board ships etc. This way you could have ensured you got (or at least denied them) that second station.

Don't be afraid of losing your ship; you'll respawn with another one. Once you get a fleet going then it's a bit more troublesome if you lose it :P

In answer to one of your questions, the station attack ships will go to the nearest station they can, so they will attempt to take over any station anywhere on the map if possible. So you'll still have chances to get some more stations (however they may not be close to each other).
