for some reason, with some of the builds ive came up with up to now, i have the feeling i would probably ace the whole thing without a sweat :P

Totally on board with this idea. There would need to be some way to replenish ammo between waves or something.

There could be a repair and resupply station that comes in between waves like in Killing Floor. Maybe also have the ability to call in mercenary A.I. controlled ships to help you out?

within a mission, maybe. We'll probably have to use an int to count the frames passed and spawn waves that way or have something to check how many enemy ships are left

I'm not sure how to run scripts in a single mission only though, that seems to be the only obstacle I can think of

then we'll have to work on defining player ships, modding the "waves" will be quite difficult, barring procedure generation which I can't do it's probably impossible to make it infinite

I like this idea; but the simulation mode kinda does this already, albeit only for one of the player's ships...
