hopefully this is a fixed issue in another patch or something, but a long time ago in a galaxy of probably a year and a half ago or at least seemingly, I played starfarer once. I also tried to mod with no programming experience at all (guess how that went). in my frustration of non successful ability to make a basic weapon other than taking a already made weapon, change what graphic it used, and changed it's damage and firerate, then awed everyone with a screen full of nothing but "ship has been destroyed".

Anyway beside the point, I was amateur and gave up on starfarer. Now I come back to starsector and there are a lot new things to play with, and I'm a much more experienced programmer and ready to tackle it again. (sorry I'm really just type rambling)

God, sorry, the real issue is that I double click on starsector.exe and nothing happens, the cursor loads a bit, but nothing happens. Game don't start; game don't like me or something. I tried starting with admin, and compatibility, nothin' worked. I think I'm using the same system as before, but not sure. Nothing is changed then, so don't know whats happenin', hope someone can help.

Do you have Java installed on your system? If not, could you try installing it (found here) and seeing if it helps? Make sure to uncheck the option to install the ask.com toolbar and whatever other crap the installer wants to add beyond Java.

You shouldn't need Java installed to run the game, but I'm starting to suspect there's an issue where at least sometimes, you do.

nope, :/ no such luck. (BTW you gave me 32 bit, and it gave me an error when I tried to install it, so I downloaded a 64 bit; It downloaded, but didn't change anything in launching the program)

Hmm. Can you put the attached starsector.txt in your C:\Program Files (x86)\Fractal Softworks\Starsector\starsector-core directory, remove the starsector.bat currently there, rename the .txt. file to .bat, and try running it? That should work for the time being, anyway, until I can figure out what's causing the problem.

Hi there,

Do you still (hopefully) have the same problem with the exe?

If so, and if you are willing to help out (special thanks in advance) could you do the following:

• Press Windows Key + R
• Type cmd, hit Enter
• Type "set > envvars.txt", hit Enter
• Type "start .", hit Enter

You will now see an explorer window with some files, one of which will be that envvars.txt file we created above. It is a dump of your windows environment variables. Can you PM me the contents of that file?

I have a similar problem. Pre-ordered StarSector yesterday and it was working fine right after downloading and installing, but it's not working today. I try and run StarSector and a Java error just pops up. To make matters even worse, the hard drive disappears and I have to reattach the SATA cable so that Windows detects it again. Reading and writing to the hard drive still works, it's just running StarSector that seems to break it.

If I were you, I'd back up the stuff on that drive. Oftentimes the first signs of one going bad are intermittent oddities like this. A virus check might be worth it, too. This just doesn't sound like the kind of issue that could be directly due to anything the Starsector executable does.

Kinda odd that it happens only when I run the executable though. Like I said, Read / Write / Execute works just fine for other files, no slow downs or any other anomalies.

Right, it's definitely odd, but The fact that it used to work for you, and now doesn't, argues for some change on your system being the cause.

A reinstall of Starsector may be worth a shot, actually. There seem to be two possibilities here: 1) the game installation got corrupted somehow or 2) something went wrong w/ your system that caused the game to stop working. A reinstall would tell us which one that is, and fix it if it was #1.
