Starfighter: Legacy 0.02a (0.03b DEV OUT!)
« on: February 11, 2013, 09:24:52 PM »

The main focus will be starfighter battles, so the missions will be fairly straight-forward dogfights, with support ships and Corvette/Frigate groups.Campaign integration will not be meant necessarily as vanilla balanced, so it may be published as a separate mod, or bundled with the campaign.

This post will be updated for documentation of the mod.

Demo download: 0.02a

DEV EDITION HERE Requires latest version of LazyLib.

Sprites so far:
Older ships (Will be kept in mod for nostalgia.)
Spoiler
Old Siifran Ships:

Belken-class Superiority Fighter
Spoiler
The Belken is one of the most advanced starfighters available in the system, boasting dual light assault guns and two Swarmer pods built into the nose.
What makes the Belken such a powerful starfighter is it's relatively small size and efficient shield generator. Command variant has Active flares rather than Fighter flares.
Found in squadrons of six (One Command fighter, five in a wing) during planned combat, but patrols are made up of one Command fighter and two escorts.
[close]

Sparrow-class Strike Corvette.
Spoiler
Hopefully will be armed with two IR Pulse Repeaters mounted in front of the cockpit[Built-in, hidden],
a Swarmer pod in the midsection (two Swarmers facing each side, hidden/Built-in), and strike missiles built-in under the wings
(Hopefully with animated pod doors). All weapons will be built-in, so it's role is very specific- providing heavy weapons support to fighter squadrons,
and being able to hold it's own in a full-scale battle against anything smaller than a light destroyer.
With maneuverability to match a Belken, moderate 180-degree front shields, and light armor, the Sparrow is a force to be reckoned with in a one-on-one,
but can be overwhelmed by a pair of frigates of it's class.

The Sparrow is also outfitted with a large active flare bank, giving it apt protection against enemy missiles. (Think AC-130 style flare dump).
[close]
Special thanks to FlashFrozen for sprite help!
Siifran battle groups consist of three Sparrows (one Command, a wing of Two), two full Belken squadrons (one Command, wing of five),
and a support carrier capable of repairs and holding extra supplies (Next project after the Sparrow is finished.)
[close]

Siifra IV Militia (S4M) Ships:
S4M Craft are fitted with their signature compact shield generators.
CS Generators have a respectable arc, generate no flux while active, but are inefficient at stopping damage.

Falchion Snubfighter
Spoiler

Main fightercraft of the S4M, the Falchion is well-armored for a fighter.
Equipped with an integrated 3-Point Defense Matrix that draws power from primary weapons and shields.
[close]

Paladin Light Snubfighter
Spoiler

A reliable interceptor, the Paladin is one of the fastest combat craft in the sector.
It is moderately armed for it's role but sacrifices armor for it's armament and speed.
[close]

Trident Heavy Fighter
Spoiler

An older design, the Trident was meant to pose a threat to larger ships.
It's proprietary beam weapon was designed to disable enemy systems while causing moderate damage at the expense of high flux.
Also has surprising speed for it's role.

Yeah, my trouble as of late is thinking of more fighter designs.

If anyone is interested, I'm using BSF Shipmaker for designs then hand-shading, so if you want to help out, design ideas are helpful :)

Updated OP.

Also wondering if you guys would have any expectations of a mod like this. To my knowledge most mods have been
based around full fleets and the premise of inter-system travel. I was mainly inspired by the finals season of Andromeda, since it's based almost
entirely in a system cut off from the rest of the universe. Small ships like fighters and corvettes would be the only available means of inter-
planetary travel, so almost every ship would have to be capable of breaking atmo. The odds of having any ships in this mod any larger than a Destroyer
will be very low, and any large ships will be extremely rare and powerful.

One of the missions I have planned will be the assault of a drift colony- I'm not really sure how to go about this other than making a station ship, and giving it next to no turning and speed.
My problem with this is that this would put the main point of conflict near one edge of the battlefield, which would be very annoying or impossible for anyone using flanking tactics. Ideas?

Updated current sprites, still trying to think of a good design for a Siifran carrier/repair ship. Maybe a stockier take on the Sparrow?

Updated the cockpits to be more consistent/clear, added red markings to the Belken and made the lining a bit thicker.

Kbro.

So far both ships have been obviously inspired by ships from other Sci-Fi universes.. Any other suggestions? I'll probably be making a freighter soon.

I need some animated missile doors (or just a unique holder that goes well with the rest of the craft) for the Sparrow, to replace the hardpoints on the wings. It is a strike craft after all, and twin Harpoons look like poo(n).

Updated OP with Alpha/Demo link. This release is just for feedback, and does not represent the finished product.

If this could be moved to 'Mods' it would be much obliged. :D

Oookay, due to apparent lack of interest I think I may make this just a tiny faction mod if I can think of more ship designs. Can always keep the mission ideas. The art style doesn't really jive with vanilla though, so not sure where to go with that.

i am here to save the day !
first, the easy part. your artstyle dosent have to be perfectly like the vanilla ones, mods like hawken fleet and ironclad have succeeded with theire own artstyle.

second, as a budging modder myself, i must tell you as i was told, you shouldnt "expect" feedback in great measures.
And such lack of feedback actually dosent mean a lack of interest. You should do modding for yourself only, with distributing it being a "gift" to others of this community.
it takes time and patience to build a mod's reputation, keep working hard on it.

you can also ask directly to someone to try your mod for some feedback if you want too
