419 scams and scam baiting
« on: January 18, 2013, 12:08:09 AM »

So a few days ago I checked my email and found a wild 419 scam that somehow made it through the spam filter

just out of curiosity (and knowing full well that it is a scam), instead of deleting the mail as I routinely do, I shot the guy a response. When he mailed back thinking he's got a fish on the hook I transferred the conversation to a fake email address and started researching on baiting techniques.

I'm wondering, has anyone tried anything like this before? Experiences to share, suggestions on responses?

general discussions on scams welcome

thanks in advance

You have to be very careful when doing something like that. Never forget that these people are criminals. They are not nice people and thing can turn very nasty when dealing with them.

I can only advice you to drop all contact with them.

What the Dr. said. Unless your an experienced hacker behind walls of security yourself, I'd stay away. Chances are these are some foreign dudes employed to make a quick buck off some hapless fools, but contacting them risks giving away important information about you that snowball into worse and worse situations. It doesn't take much for the right person to get your bank account with just your email.

i'm careful, but thanks very much for the concern

everything is done through a fake email address (even the first contact one isn't associated with my bank acc), with fake names, fake address, all that stuff as well as under a proxy

I also got in touch with the good folks at 419eater.com and they've been showing me around

yeah, i signed up for a mentor at that site...

guy asked me for money through moneygram and I refused to pay him, reason being my character has had money stolen there before. He seems to be giving up :(

Maybe I'll photoshop a receipt and send it to them as proof, not sure what I'm gonna do next

Yeah watch out for those cyber criminals, almost as bad as the cyber police, they might even backtrace you....
