The game title change follow up.
« on: January 05, 2013, 03:04:21 AM »

Alrighty then. Let me know how many times has anyone gone in the game folder.
(looking for a piece of mod, sprite, weapon, description..  or starting the game)

"And deep in your mind you go..."

"Here we go - C:\Program Files (x86)\   ..Look for F letter..."

"Ha, found Fractal Softworks.."

Click on Starsector and call it Starfarer.

Ive done that five times already, despite telling my mind "you idiot.. its Sector now.."
two seconds later.. my mind goes no, its starfarer, sorry.

Pavlov's effect anyone?  ::)

I honestly think that a lot of us vets are going to refer to Starsector as Starfarer still. Dunno why.

I'm weeping in my head over this :(, it's because of nostalgia, it's the first game I've modded in, and it it's name to change makes it seem brand new :'(

Don't worry, I'm pretty sure we'll all eventually replace the name in our mind. It's not the end of the world.

Of course, until then, we'll be mentally facepalming at ourselves.

Yeah, I still call the game Iron Brigade by its original name: Trenched (They had to change it due to legal issues). I'm thinking I'll be calling Starfarer "Starfarer" for a while yet.

Equal parts nostalgia and preference for Starfarer for me.

The thing is with Starsector is that it just doesn't sound like a "true English" name, for lack of a better phrase in my mind. There's just something about the syntax of it that seems... off. Meanwhile Starfarer, sure it ain't a real word, but you can tell that it's derived from seafarer. Just that you're operating on a completely different theatre than the oceans. Another point of preference for the name Starfarer is the ease of saying the word itself. "farer" flows so much better with "Star" than "sector" does for me. And again, I'll say that Starsector just sounds so much more generic and uninteresting than Starfarer. The latter two points I have already stated before, but I thought it would be a good idea to chuck them in this thread anyway. Unless I'm incorrect about it being a thread to put opinions about the name change in :P (If I am incorrect, then I apologise for that).

Here are two things I'm pretty sure about, just as a general, gentle reminder for everyone:

1) The name change is final

2) Any alternative you come up with has with extremely high probability been on our list of candidates and been set aside for a very good reason. This name change is the very opposite of a hasty, thoughtless decision.

Well the change seems kinda odd to me.
It just happened totally out of the blue without any rhyme nor reason.

I assume it's some sort of legal gimmnick because i fail to see why Starsector would be any more appealing to potential customers than Starfarer.

Yes, more informations would be really nice so we can understand the reason why you changed the name.
I will always remember this game as Starfarer as it just sounds better. :)

And it's not only because I got used to this name.
Also the two words Star and Sector don't really fit together I guess.

To me, well, starsector sounds to me just like a generic comm-term for spaceship captains when they report in, or log their location

This name change is the very opposite of a hasty, thoughtless decision.

This new name is awful, it doesn't roll off the tongue, makes no sense as one word, and removes the indication of personal significance within the game. That, and it's likely the most generic name for any game I've ever played. It may have not been a hasty, thoughtless decision, but Starsector certainly sounds like a hastily-decided-on, thoughtless name, and that's all that matters.
