Infinite world ideas
« on: January 17, 2012, 08:31:26 PM »

Basically, I imagine that the completed version of starfarer is going to be an infinitely generated universe, and all these ideas are based
on the fact that it is a infinitely generated universe instead of a galaxy or few maps.

Hyperspace Escape - You have the option to activate hyperspace if you are close to death.
If your ships hyperspace engine is damaged then you cant active hyperspace, also it takes a 5 second period to activate.

Simplified infinite world generator - Instead of having to program to randomly name ever (Galaxy, Planet, Star System etc.)
It would be easier to name everything Unknown(Galaxy, Planet, Star System, etc.) and give the player the ability to rename the stuff :/

Perks - You have the ability to unlock new perks. You can upgrade those perks for more effect. Here is a list of some of my ideas.

Shield Boost - Gives you 5% more shield power
Upgrades include - 5% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50%

Reflect - You receive a 10% chance of reflecting enemy weapon fire.

Speed - Increases ships movement speed by 10%
Upgrades include - 15% 30% 50%

I also had a few weapon ideas, but I am still not sure on what the best way to balance them is.

Gravity bomb - Creates a artificial gravity well that takes a few seconds to activate. the bomb causes shops to slow down, and can be used to slingshot your ships.

Tracker missile - A missile that is capable of tracking an enemy vessels.

Cloak - Removes all weapons except gravity bomb, mines, and tracker missiles. Gives you the ability to make your ship invisible to enemy.

Now these are just a few ideas that I currently have.

The 'Infinite World' is slightly outside the vanilla Starfarer Lore (some reading below), in that the technology doesn't exist to go beyond a certain limit. We are still set for a big enough volume of space to play about with, though.

Alex has 'ship modules' in place, which are technology additions to the ships which sound like they would deal with the stated 'Perks'. It's not so much 'unlock' as - subjugate your enemies, sell them into slavery - and then buy the 'perks' at the local shipyard.

If you are thinking about character progression, this will be included in some form but I suspect would cover more personality based 'perks'.

Nice weapon ideas, and the idea of a 'cloak' is definitely flying around in the developers' brains, but I think is limited to certain ships. We haven't really heard anything about these, but personally I reckon it's the big black ship in this parade:

I agree with you on the fact that technology is an issue, that is why I wrote this.

The idea of having the ability to research technology gives the game more complexity.
